APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday December 13, 2002 (MJD 52622) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek (swing) Jurek Krzesinski Atsuko Nitta-Kleinman Scot Kleinman (prepered everything for the shake) Eric Nielsen (by phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shake and maybe science at the end of the night. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We didn't check any procedure changes (Change logs were not tested). PRs tested: --------- IOP: 4137 closed. IOP: 4366 closed. IOP: 4394 closed. MCP: 4262 closed. IOP: 4384 needs feedback from Eric. IOP: 3618 needs feedback from Eric. MCP: 2682 failed the test, PR reopened. Scot's *OP changes tested and work. MOP test requests (Mike tested) works. MOP morning twilight also passed the test. SCIENCE: -------- We did scan stripe 15 S from: startLambda -65, to endLambda -20. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Mike did all afternoon checkout and shaked some stuff from the shake list: MOP: set cameraConnectTime reports 1999999 -works. LogTool auto-reports the TCC and sdssProcedures version. SOPGUI has now the default startGuider exposure time 10s and grabInst -handlers 600s. goDrift does outoScale by default (cheked on bias drift) works. If one wants to change that then the goDrift -bias -noAutoScale command should be issued. (also works). 01:45Z Landru xserver crashed on Atsuko, when we were trying to issue a help command... so, we switched driving to Jurek's computer and continued with MCP tests: Watcher error: -------------- PR 2682: 'Max accel for rotator exceeded' errors: We saw this in watcher. Here is the watcher error. PR2682: 'Max accel for rotator exceeded' errors: We saw this in watcher. Missed fiducial: ----------------- PR 4262 Once lost, a missed fiducial is gone forever: In the file: host>/p/mcp_fiducials/v1_0/az.dat We commented out fiducials # 18, 19, 20 rebooted MCP (softly) and moved the telescope across 80 - 160 deg in azimuth to see if fiducials were beeing seen. And they were showing up. And here is an extract of what murmur showed us for that event: sdsshost> setup mcp v5_17_0 sdsshost> setup mcp_fiducials sdsshost> swithcMCP 2002-12-14 02:21:38Z sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo Applying correction -453 to azimuth 2002-12-14 02:25:55Z sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo az fiducial 92.29 deg 2002-12-14 02:26:13Z sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo az fiducial 107.31 deg 2002-12-14 02:26:33Z sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo az fiducial 122.31 deg 2002-12-14 02:26:53Z sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo az fiducial 137.33 deg 2002-12-14 02:27:11Z sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo az fiducial 152.45 deg Then we undone the comments, rebooted mcp, and slewed again. All fiducials # 18, 19 and 20 were read out. And here are informations from the murmur: 2002-12-14 02:31:56Z sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo az fiducial 152.45 deg 2002-12-14 02:32:16Z sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo az fiducial 137.33 deg 2002-12-14 02:32:35Z sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo az fiducial 122.31 deg 2002-12-14 02:32:54Z sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo az fiducial 107.31 deg 2002-12-14 02:33:13Z sdssmcp tLatch dsc_I_trcInfo az fiducial 92.29 deg So in both cases we've seen the same information. PR closed. Hartmann focus tests: ----------------------- PR 3618 We will need new FFS control code once we get the new FFS control system... The sky was non-photometric and the guider images showed that the seeing was variable. The condition is not ideal for this test. But we try anyway. After we focused in our normal way and had the guide stars centered, we issued the hartmannFocus command. We saw the following message in watcher FFS 1 did NOT all close (2002-12-14 03:25:31Z sdssmcp) (FFS 1 did NOT all close (2002-12-14 03,:25:31Z sdssmcp): 2002-12-14 03:25:38Z ) although from the System Status, it looked as if the petals all closed. Then, we saw the output: sp1> hartmannFocus mcpPut: SYSTEM.STATUS mcpPut: FFS.SELECT 0x2 FFS.CLOSE ---> watcher error comes up right after this mcpPut: FFS.SELECT 0x3 FFS.OPEN 1 line shows up. mcpPut: FFS.SELECT 0x3 FFS.OPEN mcpPut: FFS.SELECT 0x3 Calculated focus offset: -39.285974125738718 Error: can't read "desiredFocusValue": no such variable sp1> Just as we were thinking about calling Eric, he called us! We are all telepathically connected. Eric fixed the bug causing the above message in hartmannFocus command. We also checked to make sure the petals were all behaving as expected by running the hartmannFocus while Jurek watched the petals standing by the telescope. Eric checked and cut iop v3_100_0 (centenial version) with his fix for hartmanFocus and instChange. We had to change cartridge since the plate we had on the telescope passed its nominal observing zone. 05:30Z cart 1 plt 1179 mounted. We are trying to get the test again (on clouds). See the focus section for the "New hartmannFocus test". seeingCurse: ------------- PR 4137 running seeingCurse in an IOP that didn't start seeingRun causes trouble. We did in one iop window: iop>seeingRun 3529 and got a seeing plot PGPlot window. in another iop session we issued: im> seeingCurse and got a message: Must run seeingRun first! But if we issued this command from the iop widnow running seeingRun, then it worked properly. So, we closed the seeingRun (with pgEnd) and issued: im> seeingCurse and got the following message: Error: This IOP has no open pgPlot window, so seeingCurse cannot run Everything works like advised. PR closed. getAllFrames: ------------------ PR 4366 getAllFrames needs a help string (It's already done for getAllPhotoFrames). Issued "help getAllFrames" and "getAllFrames -help" which gave us the same help as they should. We then copied a frame over to /data/scratch/ank to make sure the command still works, and it did. PR closed. Error messages from the SOP when it does camcheck. ------------------------------------------------------- We saw the following message during the first few hours tonight in SOP. Evry time SOP chekced the camera, it got, requestListen: listening 0 2002-12-14 02:53:33Z 9 sp1 camcheck 2002-12-14 02:53:33Z 9 sp1 SHOWREADVOLTS 2002-12-14 02:53:33Z 9 sp2 camcheck 2002-12-14 02:53:35Z 9 sp2 SHOWREADVOLTS sp1: list element in quotes followed by ":" instead of space invoked from within "camHandler" invoked from within "if {([exposureRemaining -quiet] == 0 && [statusGet daqBusy] ==0)} { # echo "Idle camHandler" camHandler return }" (procedure "camHandler_maybe" line 12) invoked from within "camHandler_maybe 60" ("eval" body line 1) invoked from within "eval $procname $args" camHandler_maybe is scheduled, further errors sent to murmur 2002-12-14 02:53:39Z: registered (addr6) listener sdsshost:observer:17337 We talked to Eric about this. We dropped the instrument, grabbed it in the current version of iop (v3_98_0), and saw no messages. We grabbed it back with the test version (v3_99_0) and the message did not appear again. instChange test: ---------------- With both TCC having the semaphore not having the semaphore cases, we issued instChange from sopGUI. The command retracted the slitheads, but the telescope did not move.
