APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday January 5, 2003 (MJD 52645) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Steph Snedden (swing) Jurek Krzesinski (night) Howard Brewington Jon Brinkmann (phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We got two exposues on plate 1130 before the clouds moved down from the north, and two exposures on plate 1186 after reopening the telescope. Problems occurred with the telescope's enclosure and flat field screen; see the problems area for details. Also a minor problem with the guider not taking images (see the log). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift: Jean Y. cleaned the alt & az drive surfaces. They were not very dirty, so we can't point to that as the definite cause of the slips noted last night. Norm notes that there is a leak in the grade 2 N2 system, so the consumption is higher than normal. He swapped in a new bottle, and there are spares in the lower enclosure. He could find no leaky joints in the rack. Spectro focus check made. Small tweaks in focus to both collimating mirrors were made. The new positions: sp1> A=3162, B=3162, C=3162 sp2> A=4498, B=4497, C=4498 The results from collimate (after adjustment): T=1.8C Reading /data/spectro/52645/sdR-b1-00017904.fit Reading /data/spectro/52645/sdR-b1-00017905.fit COLLIMATE: Min offset = -0.63 pix COLLIMATE: Max offset = 0.65 pix COLLIMATE: RMS across CCD = 0.33 pix COLLIMATE: Mean offset = 0.07 pix COLLIMATE: Camera b1 appears to be IN-FOCUS (|mean| < 0.15 pix) COLLIMATE: Predict blue camera ring movement of -2.4 degrees for spectro-1 COLLIMATE: (if red is already in focus) Log file = Collimate-52645-b1-00017904.log PostScript file = Collimate-52645-b1-00017904.ps Reading /data/spectro/52645/sdR-b2-00017904.fit Reading /data/spectro/52645/sdR-b2-00017905.fit COLLIMATE: Min offset = -0.20 pix COLLIMATE: Max offset = 0.39 pix COLLIMATE: RMS across CCD = 0.15 pix COLLIMATE: Mean offset = 0.07 pix COLLIMATE: Camera b2 appears to be IN-FOCUS (|mean| < 0.15 pix) COLLIMATE: Predict blue camera ring movement of -2.7 degrees for spectro-2 COLLIMATE: (if red is already in focus) Log file = Collimate-52645-b2-00017904.log PostScript file = Collimate-52645-b2-00017904.ps Reading /data/spectro/52645/sdR-r1-00017904.fit Reading /data/spectro/52645/sdR-r1-00017905.fit COLLIMATE: Min offset = -0.41 pix COLLIMATE: Max offset = 0.40 pix COLLIMATE: RMS across CCD = 0.22 pix COLLIMATE: Mean offset = -0.07 pix COLLIMATE: Camera r1 appears to be IN-FOCUS (|mean| < 0.15 pix) COLLIMATE: Predict (red) piston movement of 607 steps for spectro-1 COLLIMATE: Issue SOP command: "sp1; mechPiston 607" Log file = Collimate-52645-r1-00017904.log PostScript file = Collimate-52645-r1-00017904.ps Reading /data/spectro/52645/sdR-r2-00017904.fit Reading /data/spectro/52645/sdR-r2-00017905.fit COLLIMATE: Min offset = -0.47 pix COLLIMATE: Max offset = 0.14 pix COLLIMATE: RMS across CCD = 0.14 pix COLLIMATE: Mean offset = -0.05 pix COLLIMATE: Camera r2 appears to be IN-FOCUS (|mean| < 0.15 pix) COLLIMATE: Predict (red) piston movement of 414 steps for spectro-2 COLLIMATE: Issue SOP command: "sp2; mechPiston 414" Log file = Collimate-52645-r2-00017904.log PostScript file = Collimate-52645-r2-00017904.ps (Night Shift) 00:20Z building opened; however, we had a problem with the enclosure's drive motors. The building stalled just before it reached its most eastern position. We tried the by-pass, but the enclosure would not move in either direction. We call J. Brinkmann, and he suggested that we try the reset buttons, which fixed the problem. 00:49Z cart#1, plt 1130 mounted. Stars on slew. Seeing= 2.3, and we have clouds moving in from the north as exposure begins. Two usefull exposures were done, but the post calib was not because of clouds. Plate not complete. 02:44Z building close with out any problems; yet, we had a problem with the Flat Field Sreen again. See the problems area. 07:30Z enclosure opened under clear skies and increasing wind speeds. We removed the bypass connector from the flat field screen and cycled the FFS a couple of times. It seemed to work OK. 07:40Z cart#5, plt 1186 mounted. We had problems with the guider software. The Mac computer was reset, and we had to "set inst=spectro", before things started to behave as they should. Stars on slew; seeing=2.5. Two usefull exposures were done. Plate not complete. 09:32Z enclosure closed because of winds and dew point. We left bypasses on enclosure and on flat filed screens. We never open again. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3583 22:03Z 22:17Z 100 O 145.08 148.63 38 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 17899, plate -9999 ------- 21:52 17899 0.0 bias ----- sequence 17900, plate 1186 ------- 22:21 17900 10.0 flat 22:24 17901 2.0 arc 22:30 17902 2.1 arc 22:32 17903 2.1 arc 22:42 17904 2.1 arc 22:45 17905 2.1 arc ----- sequence 17906, plate -9999 ------- 00:13 17906 0.0 bias ----- sequence 17907, plate 1130 ------- 01:13 17907 10.0 flat 01:16 17908 2.0 arc ----- sequence 17907, plate 1130 ------- 01:47 17909 1200.1 target 02:15 17910 1500.1 target ----- sequence 17911, plate 1186 ------- 08:08 17911 10.0 flat 08:11 17912 2.0 arc 08:35 17913 1200.1 target 08:59 17914 1200.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:39Z 1 1130 -20.57 0.0032 55.45 0.0020 162.76 0.0063 0.999910 08:21Z 5 1186 7.41 0.0031 61.76 0.0016 186.18 -0.0082 1.000280 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL5886 Stays: JL5887 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 00:16Z 1 1130 1.00000 0 1257 0 121 30.0 4.0 3 6 gdr 2.3 08:20Z 5 1186 1.00028 -2764 -1121 20 8 61.7 -0.8 27 78 2.5 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:23Z 40 18 8 3 (N) 87 - clouds 21:56Z 40 18 5 351 (NNW) 84 - '' 22:28Z 39 17 11 2 (N) 123 - '' 23:00Z 39 17 6 19 (NNE) 71 - clouds 23:32Z 39 15 3 56 (NE) 78 - '' 00:05Z 39 11 2 20 (NNE) 30 - '' 00:37Z 38 11 7 23 (NNE) 26 - clouds 01:09Z 39 11 6 13 (NNE) 39 - '' 01:37Z 36 11 2 10 (N) 25 - '' 02:08Z 40 6 7 338 (NNW) 24 - 02:38Z 39 8 8 6 (N) 30 - 03:08Z 39 11 0 4 (N) 43 - 03:39Z 39 10 3 7 (N) 38 - 04:09Z 40 11 6 103 (ESE) 40 - 04:39Z 40 8 9 85 (E) 32 - 05:09Z 39 8 11 83 (E) 37 - 05:40Z 38 14 10 88 (E) 42 - 06:10Z 37 15 14 79 (E) 64 - 06:40Z 35 17 18 75 (ENE) 67 - 07:10Z 34 18 22 76 (ENE) 88 - 07:40Z 33 19 17 73 (ENE) 97 - 08:11Z 31 20 26 75 (ENE) 121 - 08:44Z 30 22 20 81 (E) 141 - 09:18Z 29 23 23 79 (E) 172 - 09:50Z 29 24 29 80 (E) 150 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:15Z Fans & Blowers on. There was no indication of any problem from the controller LED readout, but the interlock LED was off. We called Jon B. for advice and support. We put in the building motion bypass burndie connector, but still there was no juice to the motors. Finally we opened the control box and pushed the reset buttons. This worked. Flat Field Screen: ___________________ To move the enclosure over the telescope, we lowered the scope to six degrees. Once the building was in place, however, one of the scope upper FFS petals was not closed properly. This condition would not allow us to move the scope to its 30 degree park position. Consequenty, we had to use the FFS bypass connetor to move the scope.
