APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday June 6, 2003 (MJD 52797) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Daniel Long night: Howard Brewington Jurek Krzesinski ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Declared two plates done, vis., 1323 and 1349, and some additional signal was added to plate 1023. Although the plate database states that this plate (1023) has a S/N^2 of 13, it really only has 9.2 S/N^2. This error will need to be corrected. Imaging: 28 S - almost one hour of data, startLambda 30 with 2 deg ramp; endLambda 45.1 (ramp 43.1) TPM errors are listed in the problems setions. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- The 2.5m checkout went smoothly. No problems. The acceleration limit on the 2.5m altitude was changed in the TCC from .1 deg/sec**2 to .08 deg/sec**2. This increased the minimum clearance for the windscreen bumpers during a slew to somewhere around a quarter of an inch instead of the nearly zero it was. Slews are only just noticeably slower. This should eliminate the altitude windscreen touches during slews. This afternoon the spectrographs were refocused. Below are the mean offset values from collimate. Before After b1: -.47 .00 b2: -.60 -.25 r1: .51 .02 r2: .20 -.10 Final Piston Position sp1 sp2 motor A -7070 -7390 motor B -7070 -7390 motor C -7070 -7390 Night: -------- Clouds, rain, lightning, and high humidity during the first part of the night did not allow us to open. 04:48Z cart 09 plate 1323, no guide stars on slew nor could we find the Fk5 star. Checking the Murmur log, we noticed that the altitude axis had a correction that was too large (04:51Z), and there was also a windscreen touch (04:41Z)in altitude as well (see problems sections). After we force the fiducial correction in altitude and slewed to field again, we had guide stars. We are trying to finish this plate because it already had some signal. Unfortunately, the moon is very bright, and we're pointing in its general direction. Seeing is about 1.8" Although about five minutes was lost due to the problems listed above, this plate was declared done ater two exposures when S/N was added to previous night's. 06:01Z cart 08 plate 1349, guide stars on slew; we are pointing the general direction as the previous plate. Plate declared done with three exposures. 07:29Z Switched to imager and slewed to 28 S. During instrument change, however, about five minutes were lost removing moths from the sky-side of the corrector lens as well as the rear of the telescope before the imager was mounted. Run (3983) good since the beginning. 08:50Z Seeing deteriorated to 1.7 - 1.9" and we have clouds moving in from the west. Consequently, sky is no longer photometric, but data was good to frame 129 and lambda 45.1 09:20Z endDrift, however, scope was moved before drift ended. 09:30Z run 3984 - bias on telescope; we were trying to get back to spectro as quickly as possible to finish cart 04 plate 1023, so no dounuts tonight. Sorry! 09:58Z Swithched back to spectro. Cart 04 plate 1023, stars on slew. Seeing is now about 1.7" We were able to complete two exposures but could not declare this plate done because it's special plate requires a 30 S/N^2. Perhaps, this plate should not be unplugged; we can finish it next darkrun. 11:29Z endNight finished and was happy ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3982 22:30Z 22:43Z 100 O -58.29 -55.10 34 ignore 3983 07:32Z 09:29Z 28 S 26.79 0.00 207 science 3984 09:31Z 09:45Z 100 O 107.38 111.02 38 bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ++++++++++++++++++++++++ 07:29Z start of imaging; we cleared offsets.
