APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday June 24, 2003 (MJD 52815) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Steph Snedden night: Mike Harvanek Jurek Krzesinski visitors: Jackie Diehl (NSO) and NSO summer students: Cheryl Annette Kincaid Ludovico Cesario Laura Allaire Linda Stefaniak Tom Haxton ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Imaged 25 S from lambda 26.4 to 66.3. Imaged 38 S from lambda 19.6 to 60. Good data obtained for one plate (1035). DIMM died. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift: ------------ No problems during afternoon checkout. Spectro focus checked. No adjustments needed. Night: ------ Windscreen touch while opening: altitude (Windscreen touched in altitude: UP (2003-06-25 02:17:29Z sdssmcp): 2003-06-25 02:17:40Z) DIMM failed tonight and is dead until further notice. An update from Steph is in the Problem section. We began with imaging. Run 4009, on-telescope bias. Run 4010, 25 S: Rotator correction necessary. Everything (focus, pointing, seeing) good by frame 34, lambda 26.4 although note that nuErr was 8.3". Spectro offsets from last night were not cleared. Official twilight at frame 45, lambda 28. Everything good to the end of the run (frame 301, lambda 66.3). The dust hovered around 2200 counts for about the first 1.5 hours of this run (0330 - 0500Z). The imager QA was performed during this run. Run 4011, 38 S: Good from frame 10, lambda 19.6. The recommended rotator correction (thetaf) was a little high (0.0321 degrees) but still in the acceptable range and since finishing this strip before moonrise was going to be tight, we elected not to apply the correction. The seeing bounced around a bit and went from good to acceptable around frame 40 but then went back to good around frame 80. There appeared to be some haze in the cloud camera between about 0635 and 0650Z (early in this run). The cloud camera standard deviation got up around 12 and stayed there for about 3 minutes. It dropped down but then reached another peak just below 10 shortly therafter. After this, it dropped to about 6 and hung around there. hoggpt said it was non-photometric from 0630 until 0830. Except for the haze mentioned above, everything was good (or acceptable) to the end of the run (frame 280, lambda 60). No donuts tonight. We needed the time to make the switch to spectroscopy worthwhile. The moon rose and so we switched to spectroscopy. While doing the instrument change we got the following mcp/tpm axes watcher errors: altitude (MGT: bad alt amp (0 now 0) (2003-06-25 09:21:26Z sdssmcp): 2003-06-25 09:21:39Z ) and rotator (MGT: bad rot amp (0 now 0) (2003-06-25 09:21:49Z sdssmcp): 2003-06-25 09:21:50Z ) However, the telescope seemed to be tracking and pointing okay so we proceeded. Plate 1035 (cartridge 9): Needed an FK5 to acquire the guide stars. The guider needed some help making the rotator correction. Two exposures (2100 s total) were obtained before the sky became too bright. Windscreen touch during closing: altitude (Windscreen touched in altitude: UP (2003-06-25 10:43:05Z sdssmcp): 2003-06-25 10:43:46Z) endNight is still running as this is being written. ---=== IMAGING This evening, we started taking images, and Polaris was not in the field of view. We tried Armin's search routine, but it did not find Polaris. Steph went down to the DIMM, and it was pointing about 20 degrees east of Polaris. When she tried to move back to Polaris, the Meade would not move in declination. The manual slow motion knob worked, and the decination motor did have power and sounded like it was turning, but it did not engage the declination drive gears. Perhaps the dec drive has been slipping for awhile, and finally failed. Perhaps this has been the major source of our pointing problems? PR 5427 was filed.
