APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday June 30, 2003 (MJD 52821) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Steph Snedden Night: SKANK and Connie "oh no" Rockosi- phone ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- A perfectly good spectroscopic night that has only one spectro exposure, 2 degrees of a survey stripe, a bit of apacheWheel rim and one oblique scan to show for it. Passing clouds and various small gotchas plagued the night. ltMatch was running fine tonight, when appropriate; the PT autodome has taken on a new MO of continually rotating the dome. We found the imager CW position is back where it was before, at the upper limit. Da DIMM lost Polaris early in the night- dec drive disability? Dunno. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift: ------------ Archiver id-3 acted up during the afternoon bias. Both nodes indicated a write error and the tape drives rewound. All tapes were ejected and the crates rebooted. Fresh tapes were put in id-3. The error messages are in the problems section. Night ----- We try again to finish cart 3, plate 1371. GSOTGTF. Despite threatening rain clouds at sunset, by the end of this exposure, the sky appeared photometric and likely to stay that way, so we decided to make the switch to imaging. instChange took a little longer than normal due to the counterweight changes. The recommended new position of 680 turned out to be worse than the old upper limit. We started with 24S at an initial slewLambda of 17.5. Focus looked good from the start; skippy reported a nuErr of 8.3", but below our tolerances, so data are good from the start. We passed ramp start, lambda=20 around frame 23. Science start: lambda=22 passed around frame 35. SoK reported good or acceptable seeing since the beginning. Note, the DIMM stopped being able to track on Polaris after a couple hours this evening; Steph suspected this would happen given the dec drive failures we've seen. Seeing worsened and it became non-photometric around 05:30, frame 88 (SoK actually reports bad seeing ~ frame 60, lambda=26. The single cloud eventually went away, but seeing did not improve much, so we stopped this drift with only 2 degrees of useful data and went on to apacheWheel. We called the run science, just in case someone wants to use the two good degrees some day. Question: Step 1 of the TCC cookbook instructions says to substitute LST-54 in the track command below, but then the track command says to substitute LST-23. Which is it? We chose 54. Run 4024 binned bias in preparation for apacheWheel Run 4025 begin apacheWheel - we started with the rim scan at 216 RA. by frame 16, all the stars are dots. We got watcher errors for empty gangs and vs- chip 51 voltage errors during the scan. We surmised these were to be expected. We ended this rim scan at 273 lambda and started spoke 225 Run 4026 - we tried to do a 225 spoke, but we only got streaks - turns out the telescope motion aborted- so we axis stopped and init'ed then tried the track again - why did it abort? telescope too low in altitude - oops. So we bypassed the interlocks and raised the telescope- now trying the 255 spoke. Run 4027 - the 255 spoke - this slewed to 26deg altitude, but appeared to be OK. Oops- in another of a series of mistakes, the FFS petals were closed at the start of this drift- we opened them and re-did the track command - complete by frame 42. We got a few little cloudlets during this scan, but the photometricity index stayed well below 10 until around 08:00, where clouds came in, but well away from our patch of sky. A few small fluffs may have occasionally come our way, though. Sigh. We stopped at dec ~74 while clouds seemed to go away, but there wasn't much in the way of spectroscopy we could still do if we changed again and clouds were gone, so off to the 270 spoke. But first, a PTVME error- with no errnos. ptvmeReset did not work, but Dan's recovery folklore worked perfectly - the lost run was 4028 Run 402? - the 270 spoke -stopped telescope too low before the new spoke track command could be issued Give up on apacheWheel- do higher priority obliqueScan now. 4030 - normal bias 4031 oblique scan - the first one in the science plan: OFFSET BORESIGHT 0.10488,0.,0.,0./PAbsolute/Wait TRACK 309.500000, 35.200000 FK5 /SCANVELOCITY=(0.0000000000,0.0041780722)/KEEP=(BORESIGHT) good data start at frame 16 lots of nebulosity in this scan clouds came in the picture around frame 73, but not our field until around frame 76, after, though, the nominal 35m of this scan have passed. we ended the drift, in clouds at frame 82. 4032 - good normal bias endNight complained about some unarchived frames from this afternoon's checkout when id3 had some problems. It archived them fine, then started running fine. It was still running as this log was sent out. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4021 23:18Z 23:25Z 100 O -22.51 -20.97 24 ignore 4022 23:58Z 00:18Z 100 O -12.58 -7.63 38 ignore 4023 04:43Z 06:05Z 24 S 17.86 38.38 151 science 2 deg of good data 4024 06:11Z 06:16Z 100 O 80.82 82.19 43 bias binned 4025 06:19Z 06:54Z 100 O 82.84 91.75 208 calibration wheel rim 4026 06:56Z 07:10Z 100 O 92.13 95.66 88 ignore bad 4027 07:29Z 08:35Z 100 O 100.52 117.07 375 calibration part of a good spoke 4029 08:54Z 08:58Z 100 O 121.78 122.68 32 ignore 4030 09:14Z 09:20Z 100 O 126.80 128.33 24 ignore 4031 09:22Z 10:08Z 100 O 128.76 140.27 90 calibration oblique scan 1 4032 10:11Z 10:27Z 100 O 141.14 144.99 40 bias unbinned ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4023 11 4 70 -5.300 0.589 8.300 0.574 -0.00459 281 59 4023 22 4 74 -4.900 0.201 8.100 0.138 -0.00361 280 59 4023 76 4 61 -6.600 0.192 7.100 0.240 -0.00365 275 59 4023 128 4 58 -4.100 0.200 6.200 0.111 -0.00329 270 59 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4023 32 1 59 261 11 -1.889 0.290 0.253 0.234 -0.00085 4023 32 1 59 261 13 -1.073 0.301 0.317 0.421 -0.00107 4023 32 1 59 261 19 -0.649 0.219 0.252 0.369 -0.00085 4023 32 1 59 261 11 -0.164 0.290 0.501 0.247 -0.00168 4023 32 1 59 261 8 0.545 0.443 0.253 0.452 -0.00085 4023 51 1 59 263 11 -0.979 0.736 -0.075 0.210 0.00025 4023 51 1 59 263 11 -0.975 0.697 0.122 0.185 -0.00041 4023 51 1 59 263 9 0.137 0.568 0.484 0.398 -0.00163 4023 51 1 59 263 5 0.373 0.621 0.398 0.162 -0.00134 4023 51 1 59 263 13 0.964 0.467 0.490 0.243 -0.00165 4023 87 1 59 266 12 -1.187 0.274 -0.031 0.639 0.00010 4023 87 1 59 266 8 -0.377 0.336 -0.012 0.359 0.00004 4023 87 1 59 266 16 0.015 0.278 -0.145 0.504 0.00049 4023 87 1 59 266 15 0.489 0.163 -0.107 0.650 0.00036 4023 87 1 59 266 13 1.010 0.314 -0.349 0.466 0.00117 4023 104 1 59 268 8 -0.848 0.353 0.216 0.402 -0.00073 4023 104 1 59 268 10 -0.343 0.467 0.389 0.300 -0.00131 4023 104 1 59 268 7 0.026 0.342 0.230 0.458 -0.00077 4023 104 1 59 268 10 0.295 0.573 0.416 0.317 -0.00140 4023 104 1 59 268 16 0.496 0.315 0.274 0.455 -0.00092 4023 132 1 59 271 16 -1.012 0.269 -0.477 0.266 0.00161 4023 132 1 59 271 24 -0.459 0.162 -0.108 0.361 0.00036 4023 132 1 59 271 18 -0.119 0.242 -0.291 0.385 0.00098 4023 132 1 59 271 8 0.461 0.372 -0.151 0.551 0.00051 4023 132 1 59 271 10 1.267 0.241 -0.105 0.357 0.00035 ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 21629, plate 1346 ------- 23:42 21629 10.0 flat 23:45 21630 2.0 arc 23:52 21631 2.1 arc 23:54 21632 2.1 arc 00:11 21633 2.1 arc 00:14 21634 2.1 arc 02:11 21636 0.0 bias all of these are test data ----- sequence 21637, plate 1371 ------- 03:48 21637 10.0 flat 03:50 21638 2.0 arc 04:11 21639 900.1 target 04:17 21640 184.1 target declared bad- done just to verify 21639 had enough S/N plate finished when combined with earlier exposures ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 04:01Z 3 1371 237.29 0.0038 51.91 0.0043 88.02 0.0051 1.000270 05:02Z imager 261.58 0.0000 59.16 0.0000 26.56 0.0000 1.000000 05:02Z imager 261.60 0.0000 59.16 0.0000 26.59 0.0000 1.000000 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 04:01Z 3 1371 1.00027 -2665 -1282 -250 237 51.9 13.2 12 86 gdr 1.9 05:02Z imager 1.00000 0 -563 -452 262 59.2 12.5 9 108 i'-23 1.45 09:38Z imager 1.00000 0 -614 -466 224 80.6 10.5 5 124 i'-23 1.49 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:22Z 57 39 21 53 (NE) 532 -
