APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday November 14, 2003 (MJD 52958) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Atsuko Kleinman fog: Pete Newman Steph Snedden ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shake, night 2, followed by science (we hope). ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Sogginess. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon ----------- DA checked out fine. Imager and sp bias taken. No spectro focus checks as the lamps are unplugged. iop was moody today. Nothing major, but did the following two things. 1. Starting up one of the iop sessions failed with: /p/astroda/v14_47/bin/dscRun[429]: 5404 Memory fault(coredump) The second try went well. 2. The first bias drift failed with the following message. 2003-11-14 22:37:18Z: Beginning data taking 2003-11-14 22:37:22Z: beginData has failed: {id1 {}} {id2 {}} {id3 {}} {id4 {}} {id5 {Insufficient space in the Frame Pool}} {id6 {}} {ad1 {}} {ad2 {}} {ad3 {}} {ad4 {}} Error: goDrift ends with error in beginData I never got the leap seccond message. The second try failed in a similar manner, but this time I got "Insufficient space in the Frame Pool" for all id notes. im> goDrift -bias 2003-11-14 22:40:32Z: Beginning data taking 2003-11-14 22:40:34Z: beginData has failed: {id1 {Insufficient space in the Frame Pool}} {id2 {Insufficient space in the Frame Pool}} {id3 {Insufficient space in the Frame Pool}} {id4 {Insufficient space in the Frame Pool}} {id5 {Insufficient space in the Frame Pool}} {id6 {Insufficient space in the Frame Pool}} {ad1 {}} {ad2 {}} {ad3 {}} {ad4 {}} Error: goDrift ends with error in beginData im> im> tb goDrift ends with error in beginData while executing "error "goDrift ends with error in beginData"" invoked from within "if {[catch { beginData } msg]} { murmur "beginData has failed: $msg" 1 error "goDrift ends with error in beginData" } " (procedure "goDrift" line 84) invoked from within "goDrift -bias" I checked the archDrvSts and archState which were fine. The pool had many files, but we have stopped doing "poolInit" for many months now. We just overwrite the frames instead of deleting them every night. Steph suggested doing the poolInit anyway. So I did and the goDrift worked. Why did I have to erase the pool tonight? I did not have to do so for a very long time. Night: ------ We started off the night with fog, dripping trees and dripping lower enclosure. We will not move the telescope in azimuth tonight unless we see evidence that dripping has stopped and the az windbaffle motor is dry. Note that both dewpoint sensors were reading a dewpoint depression of about 4 C while we were in a pea-soup fog. The dewpoint was below freezing, so we suspect the mirror was frosted up. Periodically, the dewpoint sensors seemed to recover and agreed with the handheld hygrometer, then would deviate again. Through the course of the night, the lower enclosure slowly dried out. We can't say the same for the outdoors. We were closed all night. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4241 22:51Z 23:19Z 100 O 105.57 112.53 60 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 23257, plate -9999 ------- 22:38 23257 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 22:55Z 7 1487 1.00000 0 1258 0 121 30.4 3.8 22 268 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:03Z 39 31 18 263 (W) 869 - fog 23:35Z 38 31 22 273 (W) 1259 - " 00:31Z 37 31 17 272 (W) 1478 - " 01:04Z 37 24 14 274 (W) 3518 - " 01:36Z 37 31 14 267 (W) 1314 - " 02:08Z 37 31 20 284 (WNW) 1127 - " 02:41Z 36 36 11 275 (W) 1707 - " 03:13Z 36 36 20 280 (W) 4076 - " 03:45Z 36 36 19 275 (W) 6138 - " 04:17Z 36 36 18 292 (WNW) 5616 - " 04:49Z 36 35 13 269 (W) 338 - " 05:22Z 36 36 15 286 (WNW) 292 - " 05:54Z 35 35 16 294 (WNW) 337 - " 06:26Z 34 33 14 264 (W) 396 - " 06:58Z 35 33 18 280 (W) 418 - " 07:35Z 35 34 25 288 (WNW) 427 - " 08:07Z 35 34 18 278 (W) 313 - " 08:39Z 35 31 19 287 (WNW) 523 - " 09:11Z 35 30 22 293 (WNW) 586 - " 09:44Z 35 27 17 291 (WNW) 512 - " 10:16Z 35 30 15 304 (NW) 476 - " 10:48Z 34 26 18 297 (WNW) 452 - " 11:20Z 34 27 17 298 (WNW) 449 - " 11:53Z 35 30 18 293 (WNW) 460 - " ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Never opened.
