APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday November 20, 2003 (MJD 52964) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Atsuko Nitta Night: Dan Long, Pete Newman Support: Jon Brinkmann, Connie Rockosi (UW, phone), Jim Gunn (Princeton, phone), Craig Loomis, Jon Davies, French Leger (FNAL, phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- A number of more or less serious problems in the first few hours of the night lost us some time. Spectroscopy all night in the presence of observer-detected aurora plus some clouds and variable seeing. Completed 6 plates (1211, 1251, 1298, 1476, 1487, 1587) and obtained 7 of 21 exposures on the Tremoonti aperture bias program plate 1180. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------- The spectrographs' focus did not need adjustment. The imager bias ccd51 looked strange (bands of stripes in bright and dark). I asked JB and Connie for help. See problem section #1 below for details. This problem may be resolved. Before starting to try to remove the coma from images by adjusting the primary collimation, we checked the settings on the astigmatism corrector, and found them to be incorrect. See problem section #2 below for details. This problem is unresolved. Next up, the power supply to Pete's laptop failed with a broken output cable. Problem resolved. Night ----- Cirrus in several directions at sunset so we started with spectroscopy. Guide stars located after gotoField unless noted. 01:00Z Plate 1476, cartridge 3. Done in 1 exposure, 900s, when combined with data from MJD 52943. Merged program requiring standard S/N. FK5 star used to center up during twilight. On going to swap to the next cartridge, we found the pump toggle switch on the lift pendant had disintegrated. See problem section #3 for details. Problem resolved. 02:05Z Plate 1137, cartridge 6. We were unable to slew to the field for this plate as the plugmap data seem to be wrong. See problem #4 for details. This is unresolved. 02:19Z Plate 1487, cartridge 7. Done in 5 exposures, 4500s. Merged program requiring standard S/N. Because we could not observe cartridge 6, we spent more time on this plate than necessary. Guide fiber 8 has dirt visible in the guider flat-field images. 04:05Z Plate 1251, cartridge 4. Not done in 1 exposure, 1200s (but see continuation below). Taurus program. Set-up on this plate took longer than usual because a large scale change was required combined with the faint guide stars that have been a feature of this observing program. Clouds beginning to encroach on the observed field. SoS failed to reduce b2 for exposure 23368, so we will judge if there is sufficient S/N from the lowest of those cameras that are being reduced. We seem to be getting an increasing number of non-standard plates, so it will be nice when PR5735 gets addressed. Aurora visible to the naked eye as a distinct red glow to the north about 30 deg high. 05:00Z Plate 1180, cartridge 9. 7 of 21 exposures, 8400 s. Tremonti aperture bias program requiring non-standard pointings and exposure times (see apertureBiasPlates.txt in sdssTests). SoS had varied difficulty reducing the central-pointing exposures. We obtained the following exposures in this program before the design time expired: Central pointing 3 x 1200 s Offset 1 3 x 1200 s Offset 2 1 x 1200 s so that is where to continued from. Aurora faded. 08:04Z Plate 1251, cartridge 4. Continued from above, and done in a total of 3 exposures, 3000 s. FK5 star need to acquire the field at high altitude. Camera r1 was fully reduced by SoS to a total (SN)^2 = 12.7, but given the SoS uncertainties in this reduction, we decided to declare this plate done. 09:02Z Plate 1587, cartridge 1. Done in 3 exposures, 2700 s. Survey plate. During the preCalib flat-field exposure, we got "Wrong num of pix" errors - see problem section #5 for details. This problem is open. 10:15Z Plate 1211, cartridge 8. Done in 3 exposures, 2420 s. Survey plate. 11:23Z Plate 1298, cartridge 5. Done in 3 exposures, 2240 s. Survey plate. We had another "Wrong num of pix" error in the last frame - see problem section 5 for details. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4266 22:25Z 22:53Z 100 O 104.94 112.14 62 ignore 4267 23:13Z 23:30Z 100 O 117.07 121.21 39 ignore 4268 00:10Z 00:14Z 100 O 131.32 132.32 21 ignore 4269 00:15Z 00:27Z 100 O 132.69 135.49 33 ignore 4270 00:29Z 00:38Z 100 O 136.00 138.34 30 ignore 4271 01:08Z 01:30Z 100 O 145.79 151.40 51 ignore 4272 03:09Z 04:21Z 100 O -183.87 -165.67 135 ignore 4273 08:50Z 10:35Z 100 O -98.41 -72.00 190 ignore All of the above were testing the problems with bias levels. ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): Y QA Procedures Done (y/n): N UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 23349, plate -9999 ------- 22:21 23349 0.0 bias ----- sequence 23350, plate 1476 ------- 6.4 5.9 7.1 4.6 22:29 23350 10.0 flat test 22:31 23351 2.0 arc test 22:35 23352 2.1 arc test 22:37 23353 2.1 arc test 23:33 23354 0.0 bias 01:04 23355 10.0 flat 01:06 23356 2.0 arc 01:29 23357 900.1 target ----- sequence 23358, plate -9999 ------- 02:14 23358 0.0 bias ----- sequence 23359, plate 1487 ------- 37.0 34.0 44.9 28.5 02:29 23359 10.0 flat 02:31 23360 2.0 arc 02:49 23361 900.1 target 03:07 23362 900.1 target 03:25 23363 900.1 target 03:43 23364 900.1 target 04:01 23365 900.1 target ----- sequence 23366, plate 1251 ------- See below for totals 04:27 23366 10.0 flat 04:30 23367 2.0 arc 04:53 23368 1200.1 target ----- sequence 23369, plate 1180 ------- N/A N/A N/A N/A 05:11 23369 10.0 flat 05:13 23370 2.0 arc 05:37 23371 1200.1 target Center 05:59 23372 1200.1 target Center 06:22 23373 1200.1 target Center 06:47 23374 1200.1 target Offset 1 07:10 23375 1200.1 target Offset 1 07:33 23376 1200.1 target Offset 1 08:00 23377 1200.1 target Offset 2 ----- sequence 23378, plate 1251 ------- 21.0 12.7 ?.? I asked JB and Connie for help. Connie suggested we pull the other photo1 frames (CCD11 and CCD31) and we clearly saw similar pattern of stripes in saoDisplay, although when I was looked them on the scrolling display, it looked the normal gray bias images. Connie suggested that we look at last night's bias and end of science frames to see if we see anything and all looked well. Connie suggested that we try swapping the power supply for dewar 1. This or the power cycling the dewar 1 helped and we thought we got a good bias again (but this was mistaken - read on). Connie suggest that we keep close eyes on the imager tonight and if dewar 1 acts up again, try power cycling. If that doesn't work, she suggest to try relatching the T bars. After taking twilight flats, I checked the "Changing power supply" folklore and saw that I was suppose to issue "setImagerAmpsOn". After issuing this, then I restarted a bias and dewar 1 chips showed stripes followed by ccd51 looking purple. This time, the whole chip was purple and no stripes. We stopped and restarted another bias, and this time we saw no stripes but purple ccd51 image scrolling. We waited for a while to see if astroline was having problems. We did a goDrift (nonbias) in the dog house with the lid on just to see if the astroline will behave better. We saw stripes in frame 22 across all chips on dewar1 (ccd 11, 21, 31, 41, 51). We tried unlatching the T bars in the doghouse but the same problem continued. However, after some long bias runs, everything _seems_ to have settled down. If I understand Connie's thoughts on this, the glitches caused by the PSU failure (if such it was) and swap may have introduced problems that have now been cleared by either time or frames read out. We opened PR 5773 to document this problem. Problem 2 - Astigmatism corrector errors ---------------------------------------- We had a request from Connie to, if possible, tweak the primary mirror collimation, as there was still some coma and asymmetry in the measured PSF FWHM across the imager. Before starting to try to remove the coma from images be adjusting the primary collimation, we checked the settings on the astigmatism corrector, and found them to be incorrect. Jon Brinkman said that the displayed values for all 12 actuators should agree with those noted on the control box to within a couple of tenths and that the values should be constant with telescope position. We found that 8 of the 12 were out of tolerance (telescope at 30 deg alt), as follows: Actuator Nominal Actual 2 53.1 62.1 4 53.1 51.7 6 193.8 190.5 7 146.9 147.3 8 53.1 52.5 10 53.1 52.6 11 146.9 146.2 12 193.8 188.3 The values were similarly off at alt=90deg. Following Jon B's advice, wetried to adjust all the values to be within 0.2 of nominal. This was possible for all but actuator 12, for which the adjustment potentiometer seems to be damaged (the shaft is pushed in and has no effect on the values). However, when we slewed to a new position, several of the actual values again went significantly out of tolerance. Are we being too severe with the permitted tolerances? We would like to know that and, if necessary, get the astigmatism system fixed before altering the primary mirror collimation. We filed PR 5774 on these problems. Problem 3 - Broken lift control pendant --------------------------------------- As we went to change to the second cartridge of the night (i.e. the first cartridge change), we found the pump toggle switch on the lift pendant had mechanically failed and was inoperative. It looks like the toggle stalk has been pushed in. Dan and Craig soldered in a replacement, and we got back on the sky. We don't know how it happened, but all users should be aware that the switches are not mechanically strong, and the pendant should not be placed on the ground face down. French is aware of this repair and its quality will be confirmed by the engineering crew at some point. Problem 4 - Cartridge 6, plate 1137 plugmap error? -------------------------------------------------- When we tried to go to the field for cartridge 6, we got the following errors and the telescope did not slew: sp1> loadCart 6 1137 /p/iop/v3_121_0/params/cartridgeInfo.par Loading map: /data/spectro/plugMapM/plPlugMapM-1137-52956-01.par Reading /data/spectro/plugMapM/plPlugMapM-1137-52956-01.par Taking absolute values of GUIDE fiberId Taking absolute values of ALIGNMENT fiberId Error: can't read "gFiber(raCen)": no such element in array No track command was issued when gotoField was sent. We will ask Steve Kent and Norm Blythe to investigate.
