APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday November 27, 2003 (MJD 52971) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Atsuko Nitta Night: Howard Brewington Scot Kleinman Joining us for Thanksgiving dinner: Russet McMillan Bill Ketzeback Jurek Krzesinski Mike Harvanek Jackie Diehl Lori Diehl ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We declared one plate done (1137, rockosi50) and got some signal on another (1663, seguetest83). We mounted the imager and got about 70 frames of 82,S before the seeing went bad. We switched to Apache Wheel and completed the following: rim scan, spoke 75, spoke 90, hub scan, and spoke 120. Clouds ended spoke 120 a few degrees early. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon ----------- Spectro focus adjusted. Everything else checked out fine. The grade-2 nitrogen seemed to be disappearing very quickly; the connections were checked, but no problem was found. Evening: ----------- Thanksgiving Menu: dates rolled in a bacon blanket (baked) butternut squash/garbanzo bean soup black olives baked turkey and stuffing with brown gravy mashed white potatos mashed sweet potatos with cinnamon, nutmeg, and other spices tomato/cheese/capers/green olive salad brown and wild rice green peas cranberry sauce (one regular, and one mixed with oranges) garlic cheese and sour dough breads pumpkin pie pecan pie vanilla ice cream French vanilla Cool Whip Perrier, various other soft-drinks including some soft-drinks from Mexico Night: ------------ While opening the enclosure, we heard two different and atypical noises coming from the north side of the building near the track/rail. One was low freq, and the other was high freq. Because of the moon, we are started with spectro. 01:08Z cart 06, plate 1137 (rockosi50). An Fk5 star was used to find the field, and offsets were cleared. Seeing is about 2.5" We started the first 1200 second exposure several minutes before twilight ended, but failed to reach the 2.0 S/N^2 minimum. R2 was displayed in SOS as 1.9 S/N^2. This plate was finished with the two following exposures when tonight's S/N^2 was added to previous exposures. 03:07Z cart 03, plate 1663 (seguetest83). An Fk5 star was used to find the field; however, the Fk5 was about 10" from the center of fiber #10. One exposure was completed before switching to the imager. 04:15Z We started with 82,S -startLambda -167 but seeing went out of spec at frame 80 lambda -155. We later ended the drift at frame 184 lambda -139. 08:55Z While doing Apache Wheel and slewing to spoke 90, we had a correction too large in az; unfortunately, we missed it. We forced a fiducial before starting the hub though. 11:38Z We had clouds move into the area, which caused us to end spoke 120 a few degrees early. We used setRunandFrame 4289 1 Unfortunately, it did not work. When we did a "cc startscan," we got: PHASEMICRO BUSY We did not understand this return. A few times during the night while slewing, we got very large correction errors as follows: azimuth (correction for azimuth -29642 is too large (2003-11-28 11:43:43Z sdssmcp): 2003-11-28 11:43:58Z ) We had to change the bottle of Grade-2 nitrogen at the end of the night. Misc. Watcher errors are listed in the problems section. endNight finished and was happy! We noticed at the end of the night that the computer monitor in the PT dome had been left on all night. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4285 22:08Z 22:22Z 100 O 107.69 111.11 37 ignore 4286 04:07Z 04:12Z 100 O -162.40 -160.96 24 bias 4287 04:15Z 04:25Z 82 S -166.57 -163.94 31 ignore 4288 04:27Z 06:16Z 82 S -165.73 -138.35 197 science 4289 06:24Z 11:40Z 100 O -128.00 -48.81 231 calibration 4290 11:45Z 12:09Z 100 O -47.51 -41.61 52 bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- 04:15Z Run 4287: Science, 82,S, -startLambda -166 Skippy was not happy on this run, so we backed up and started again. ++++++++++++++++++++++++ 04:27Z Run 4288: Science, 82,S -startLambda -166 , -endLambda -139.3 Seeing was not in spec from frame 80 (lambda -155.2) to frame 184 (lambda =139.3) Frame Lambda Notes ----- ------ -------------------------------------------------------- 010 -165.3 Seeing good (1.4"), focus converged, skippy happy 020 -164 Start ramp. 032 -162 Start science. 079 -155.1 Last frame of good seeing; seeing now = ~1.9" 184 -139.3 endDrift ++++++++++++++++++++++++ 06:25Z Run #4289 Apache Wheel Frame RA deg Notes ----- ------ -------------------------------------------------------- 008 03 Start of Equatorial rim scan at Dec of 00 (06:25Z). 058 128 End of the Equatorial rim scan at Dec of 00 (07:38Z).
