APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday November 29, 2003 (MJD 52973) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Atsuko Nitta (swing) Mike Harvanek Howard Brewington ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Declared plates 1300, 1663, and 1664 done; also got some signal on 1096. Finished all but a free lambda of 39,S before clouds ended the drift. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------------- The collimate recommended adjustments, but the air temp is warm right now -- 8C (tower), 9C (inside enclosure ambient) with forcast predicting below 0C temperature for the night. Therefore I decided not to change coll. position since the current position were good for last night's observations which was aroound 3-5C. I saw a smear on the AZ drive probably from a moth. I could not quite reach the drive surface to clean it from a ladder. The observers who are taller than me are informed. The south louver was getting sticker these days and I could not get it to open today. Night: ---------------- Because of the moon, we started with Spectro. We noticed that the grade-2 nitro bottle had been replaced today; it was previously replaced three-days ago. French called later in the evening and said that Carlos had been in earlier today to inspect this system. However, we lost about 500lbs during the night. We think guide fibers #2 and #8 may need to be cleaned. There were more dead mice in the imager dog house tonight. During the night, the laptop at the 2.5-meter telescope stopped working. We discovered that the data cable was disconnected. Is there a way to prevent this from happeining? We noticed over the last couple of nights that the cartridge manipulator arm has started to oscillate again as before. The oscillation was so rough infact, that we were afraid the fibers could be virbrated out of the plate. 00:42Z cart 03, plate 1663 (seguetest83). We had a little trouble finding the Fk5 star associated with this field. But after we cleared the offsets and a did spiralPattern, the Fk5 was located. The temp had changed very little since this afternoon and the spectros are still out of focus, so we performed the focus adjustments, i.e., goSpecFocus. Plate was declared done when the two exposures from tonight were added to previous night's S/N2. 03:55Z cart 02, plate 1096 (merged48). Offsets cleared, and used Fk5 to find the field. We completed two exposures on this plate but did not declare it done. 03:54Z cart 07, plate 1664 (seguetest83). An Fk5 star was used to find the field. We did three twenty-minute exposures, a postCal, two more twenty-minute exposures, another postCal, and declared this plate done. During the QA on this plate, we got the following for "set img [ regReadAsFits h16 sdR-b2-00023600.fit ]." i.e., SAOimage: histeq could not converge on best distribution, proceeding anyway. Yet, the image displayed with saoDisplay looked typical. 06:55 After the moon set, we switched to the imager but had a no gangs transfer problem with the first drift, i.e., 40,S; see notes in the imagingDetails. 07:45Z Because we lost some time with the no-gangs problem, we switched to 39,S; seeing was about 1.1" as reported by seeingRun. The nuError was greater than 8" for the first part of the drift and increasing; see imagingDetails. We also had clouds end the drift a few lambda early. We switched back to spectro. 10:50Z cart 05, plate 1300 (chunk66). We had guide stars on gotField. Declared done after four exposures. See problems section for misc Watcher errors during the night. endNight finished and was happy! ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4292 22:05Z 22:28Z 100 O 108.77 114.55 53 ignore 4293 06:54Z 07:20Z 40 S -49.48 -42.91 58 ignore 4294 07:41Z 10:14Z 39 S -46.62 -8.21 269 science 4295 10:19Z 10:36Z 100 O -67.10 -62.97 42 bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- 06:50Z Run 4293: Science, 40,S -startLambda -50 We had a problem with no gangs being transfered. So, we tried doing a teamster 60 imager -force, as well as checking the ptvme for problems (none were found). Next, we ended the drift, unmounted the tapes, rebooted the crates, remounted the tapes, and restarted the teamster, which fixed the problem. Because we lost some time with this problem, we moved on to 39,S. We got no useful data with this drift. And, we got this error: makeRunLog failed for run 4293.
