APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday December 20, 2003 (MJD 52994) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Steph Snedden (helped us get ready) Atsuko Nitta Mike Harvanek ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Finished plates 1490 and 1358. Good data on plate 1435. Finished 26 S (lambda -67.5 to -31 although the last 9 degrees are somewhat suspect). Imaged 16 N (lambda = -41 to -29). Imaged Sagittarius scan from RA = 44.38, DEC = 8.54, UT = 03:00Z, ST = 01:55 to RA = 88.84, DEC = 30.39, UT = 06:03Z, ST = 04:57. Atsuko figured out how to make idl skippy work on the Sag. scan. Couldn't get DIMM to work. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: Spectros did not require any adjustments. Both the imager and spectro dewars were replaced upon opening. Seeing some thin clouds, we start with spectro. DIMM problem: Mike attacked several problems. First DIMM could not find Polaris. Mike centered it in the guider scope and then found Polaris on the ccd using the Take Images command. Then the exposure time changed on its own. The exposure time was reset and then Mike tried the Start Seeing Measurements command. Polaris did not appear and the console complained that it could not use the images. Mike then noticed that the images were very very very slowly updating or hardly updating at all on the monitor. Steph was called but we only got her voicemail. Mike decided to restart the server but when he attempted to do so it said that the server was already running. The DIMM software was then restarted, Polaris was reacquired and Take Images showed Polaris to be on the ccd but Start Seeing Measurements still said it could not use the images. We gave up at this point. Cart 2 Plate 1490 merged ------------------------ FK5 necessary for this plate. The sky became photometric during twilight. We finished this plate in 3x900s exposures. We decided to image since the sky is photometric and seeing is good. 02:13Z instChange Run 4333 82 N -162 ------------------ This is a run to check the focus and get skippy to check the rotator before going to Sag. scan which will probably not have any skippy results. Skippy reported: thetaf=0.0024 nuErr=8.1" and then -7.9". The seeing was around 1.2" after we were in focus. Happy with our results, we stopped this drift to go to Sag scan. Run 4334 Sag. scan (100,O) -------------------------- TRACK 44.37961, 8.53726 FK5 /SCANVELOCITY=(0.00346083,0.00234072) /rota=0 /rotty=obj /keep=(boresight) was used to go to the field. Started run 4334 at RA = 44.38, DEC = 8.54, UT = 03:00Z, ST = 01:55 In focus and good seeing from the beginning of this run. Atsuko figured out why the idl skippy on sdsshost was failing for this run. There is a minus sign missing from the xbore number in the command given in the science plan document. Consequently, she was able to make it work for this run (hurray!) and the idl skippy output is given in the skippy section. LtMatch did not run automatically but appeared to work when the LtMatch button was clicked. Towards the end of the run, idl skippy did not appear to work. Please see the Skippy section and the Problems section for details. Ended run 4334 at RA = 88.84, DEC = 30.39, UT = 06:03Z, ST = 04:57 All data good from the beginning to the end of the run. Run 4335 26 S, lambda = -67.5 to -31 ------------------------------------ Focus, seeing and skippy all good from the beginning. The nu error was a bit large for this run (-10.5) but was still acceptable. Light clouds started appearing around 07:50Z, frame 180, lambda -40 and continued off and on for the rest of this run. For the most part, these clouds were low on the horizon and were not where we were pointed. The standard deviation of the cloud camera showed 2 brief (5? minute) excursions from photometric conditions with values between 8 and 9. We are calling this run done both because we believe the data are good and because the maximum amount of the strip that might need to be redone (9 degrees) is probably too small to be redone. Conditions became non photometric but the satellite images showed little in the way of approaching clouds so we decided to wait for a while to see if photometric conditions returned. While waiting, we scanned a while on 16 N but no good data were taken. We then obtained an on-telescope bias. It became photometric again. Run 4338 16 N, lambda = -41 to -29 ---------------------------------- Focus, seeing and skippy all good from the beginning. The nu error was a bit large for this run (-9) but was still acceptable. We got to lambda -29 (frame 93) before clouds came in (1032Z). We ended the drift at lambda -25 (frame 110) although these last 4 degrees were probably affected by the clouds. We switched to spectroscopy. Cart 7 Plate 1358 ----------------- An FK5 was found after using the offsets from the previous night for this plate. When combined with data from the previous night (52993), this plate was finished in 2 exposures (1500 s total). Cart 1 Plate 1435 ----------------- Both the altitude and rotator aborted going to the field and we got the following watcher error: altitude (correction for altitude -614 is too large (2003-12-21 12:09:31Z sdssmcp): 2003-12-21 12:09:41Z) A spiralPattern search was needed to find the FK5 star. Since twilight was approaching, the science exposure was taken before the calibration exposures. We obtained a single 900s exposure before the sky became too bright. endNight is still running as this is written. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4333 02:34Z 02:53Z 82 N -161.30 -156.47 46 ignore focus, skippy check 4334 03:01Z 06:04Z 100 O -156.31 -110.27 321 science Sagittarius scan 4335 06:08Z 08:32Z 26 S -66.71 -30.67 254 science 26 S lambda -67 to -31 4336 08:35Z 09:21Z 16 N -40.50 -28.89 91 ignore waiting on clouds 4337 09:24Z 09:39Z 100 O -60.16 -56.46 39 bias on-telescope bias 4338 09:41Z 10:43Z 16 N -40.67 -24.95 119 science 16 N lambda -41 to -29 ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- See main log. ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4333 17 4 43 -9.400 0.132 -8.100 0.115 -0.00236 177 57 4333 25 4 33 -9.700 0.101 -7.900 0.111 -0.00241 177 57 Output from IDL skippy (run manually on sdsshost; thanks Atsuko!): FILENAME MU ROT_ERROR NU_ERROR ------------------------- ----------- ----------- ------------ idGang-004334-c1-0031.fit 52.116 0.0062622 -7.2448 idGang-004334-c2-0031.fit 52.115 0.0036777 -7.0339 idGang-004334-c3-0031.fit 52.115 0.0091681 -7.0553 idGang-004334-c5-0031.fit 52.115 0.0048581 -7.2540 idGang-004334-c6-0031.fit 52.115 0.034693 -5.4502 SKIPPY: NODE = 32 [deg] SKIPPY: INCL = 35 [deg] SKIPPY: XBORE = -22.7402 [mm] = 0.104880 [deg] SKIPPY: Median rotator offset = 0.00626219 [deg] SKIPPY: Median nu error = -7.05532 [arcsec] FILENAME MU ROT_ERROR NU_ERROR ------------------------- ----------- ----------- ------------ idGang-004334-c1-0159.fit 71.279 0.012711 -8.6619 idGang-004334-c2-0159.fit 71.278 0.0086940 -8.3897 idGang-004334-c3-0159.fit 71.278 0.0091427 -8.6708 idGang-004334-c4-0159.fit 71.278 0.0018428 -8.6461 idGang-004334-c5-0159.fit 71.278 0.011862 -8.7468 idGang-004334-c6-0159.fit 71.278 0.022909 -8.1097 SKIPPY: NODE = 32 [deg] SKIPPY: INCL = 35 [deg] SKIPPY: XBORE = -22.7402 [mm] = 0.104880 [deg] SKIPPY: Median rotator offset = 0.0118616 [deg] SKIPPY: Median nu error = -8.64615 [arcsec] FILENAME MU ROT_ERROR NU_ERROR ------------------------- ----------- ----------- ------------ idGang-004334-c1-0213.fit 79.364 0.0076170 -9.2563 idGang-004334-c3-0213.fit 79.363 0.0096950 -9.3389 idGang-004334-c6-0213.fit 79.362 0.059728 -5.7432 SKIPPY: NODE = 32 [deg] SKIPPY: INCL = 35 [deg] SKIPPY: XBORE = -22.7402 [mm] = 0.104880 [deg] SKIPPY: Median rotator offset = 0.00969498 [deg] SKIPPY: Median nu error = -9.25635 [arcsec] We noticed that the number of files in the skippy output changes.
