APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday January 27, 2004 (MJD 53032) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Stephanie Snedden Night: Howard Brewington Mike Harvanek ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We declared two plates done, vis., 1561 and 1641. We also completed the following; see imaging details. 16 N, lambda -63 to -48 16 N, lambda -10 to 24 26 N, lambda 05 to 19 THETAF limit exceeded in last frames, i.e., 113 to 136. See imaging details. While doing the on-telescope bias at the end of the night, we noticed that U3 was unhappy. Although watcher should have complained, it did not. We tried to contact JEG and are still trying. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing: ====== Spectro focus checked. No changes needed. Afternoon checkout was without problems, although I see the weather stripping on the manipulator and bay door control box is shredding. A PR was filed. The auto-instrument-lift was used during the afternoon. I deliberately stopped the lift just shy of 1000 lb. force and tried to latch. Nope. Bumped the force up over 1000 lb. and it latched. Sorry, I didn't notice the heights, but certainly there were no logic incompatibilities like the last time I tried this, since I was able to latch. Speeds were slow at the beginning, then increased after the lift engaged the cart and cartridge. I don't know about at the top of the range, because I can't keep myself from letting off the thumbwheel at that point...it's ingrained. Night: ====== 01:00Z cartrigde 01, plate 1561 (lowz74). We could not find the field with an Fk5 or clearing the offsets. In fact, we could not find the Fk5. Mike guessed the Fk5 was +10" in RA, and it was. A nine-step focus sweep was done for this plate, and we noticed that steps #2, #4, #6, #8 were not displayed for some unknown reason. Although this plate wanted a mid-cal, the time required for the cal would not allow us to finish before the plate expired for the night. Likewise, we are near the end of the run and another weather front is approaching. This plate was declared done. b1 r1 b2 r2 53027 15.5 09.5 17.3 14.3 53032 18.6 20.8 21.7 23.3 ----------------------------- Total 34.1 30.3 39.0 37.6 03:25Z cartridge 05, plate 1641. An Fk5 star was used to find the field; we did not need to clear the offsets. We did a seven-step focus sweep for this plate, and all steps were properly displayed. With the preious plate, the efficiency averaged about 80%. Although the observing conditions are comparable, the efficiency for this plate was only about 50% when doing the on-target exposures. The first exposure was done on target. The second exposure was offset by +10" in RA. After this exposure, we did an offset of -10" which should have place the guide stars back onto the guider fibers. However, this was not the case. We tried to search around to find the guide stars but was unsuccessful. So, we had to use the Fk5 to find the field again. The third exposure was done on target. The fourth exposure was offset -10" in RA. We tried this offset exposure with gGuide off and found that the guide stars had drifted about 2" to the north when we returned to the field for the next exposure. The fifth exposure was done on target. However, we lost the field when gGuide was turned on and had to use the Fk5 again. The sixth exposure was offset +10" in RA. All exposures were twenty-minutes. This plate was declared done. b1 r1 b2 r2 53024 07.0 09.2 07.0 06.5 53027 02.5 02.4 02.6 02.1 53032 07.0 09.0 07.0 07.1 ------------------------------ Total 16.5 20.6 16.6 15.7 07:00Z We mounted the imager; see imaging details.
