APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday February 16, 2004 (MJD 53052) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Dan Long Night: Atsuko Nitta Jurek Krzesinski ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- o We finished three plates (1562, 1736 and 1741). o Craig had to restart the ssh daemon on host. host's daemon stopped allowing new connections to be established for longer than what seemed to us a microsecond. o We IMAGED!!!! 26 N -63 to 3 Done. 25 S 2 to 23 Done. Although the last 50 min of the run might be bad. o Opening iop windows hung late at night (shortly before 12:00Z). Killing one iop session allowed us to open a new iop session. How many iop sessions are we allowed to open. We had total of 9 iop window open between Jurek, Atsuko and observer. There were 17 more iop.bin running. Is there a maximum number of iop that host can handle? We seem to have started to experience this since a dark run ago or so. o endNight failed. Yes, it did. Our first attempt to run endNight failed due to some problem with ioptape.archlog. We restarted endNight with fresh gang tapes and it is running as we go to bed. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Normal afternoon check. Spectrograph 2 focus adjusted. There was a glitch in the mechPiston move, but finishing it with mechMoveColl worked. See problem section for numbers and error from move. Maybe sp2 needs the same fuse holder treatment as sp1 got today. Binned bias was taken at the request of Jim Gunn. It was done in the doghouse with the t-bars unlatched after getting the OK from Jim that this was acceptable. It took two tries. The first attempt failed in the normal way with ad4 getting hung up by its .inProg flag. 00:15Z Thermoking Off, Doors Open, Fans On. Night: ------ Cart 4 Plate 1562 ------------------- Fk5ed. We finished after three exposures combined with previous ones. Cart 5 Plate 1736 ------------------- guideStars on gotofield after clearing offsets. During the first science exposure, we lost guide stars for a while to clouds. The weather improved during 2nd, 3rd exposures and we were able to finish this plate in 3 exposures. Cart 7 Plate 1741 ------------------ Fk5ed to acquire the guideStars. ~05:15Z We noticed that we cannot open any more HOST windows. Although we had plenty of HOST windows open, we can never have enough. As a matter of fact, we were considering to put imager on and wanted to run axisStripeRate in astrotools. I logged out one of my iop sessions to start astrotools and ran the axis StripeRate. When we used "finger" and "w" on HOST, we found out that it only listed Jurek's window. None of my windows, nor the observer's window (the iop session from sirrobert) were listed. When I tried to ssh to host from commish, landru and galileo, I got the following message: ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host We found out that SoS was no longer transferring science frames over to SoS to reduce them. We tried logging out of few host sessions, but we still could not start any new host sessions. So we called Craig. According to Craig, ssh daemon went on strike 22:08:05. It was allowing new connections, but then kicking the new connections off shortly after. He restarted the daemon and we were back to being normal. It was nothing to do with the maximum number of host session allowed etc. since we were not near the limit when this happened. When SoS finally reduced the remaining two science exposures, this plate was done. We note that we got the following message although we saw no evidence of anything wrong in the frame or sky line plot. sdR-r1-00025113.fit: WARNING: Max sky-residual chi2 = 71.7891 at 8917.48 Ang (ignoring 5577) After taking three exposures on plate 1741, we instChanged to imager. We did not know if we were done since SoS has not been able to reduce the 2nd or 3rd frames, but we guessed that all was well from the 1st exposure and the efficiency we were getting. While we changed inst, watcher have reported counter weight limit abort. All counter weights are at the upper limit position which is where they are suppose to be when imager is mounted. The actual error message is in the PROBLEM section. Since the lift pendant was plugged on the auto side (N side), Atsuko used auto system to change two cartridges. We tried using it for putting the imager on, but the lift refused to move up. The cart was pinned, the air pressure on the cart air springs was at 42psi, the corrector lens was removed. We could not figure out why the lift did not want to move. So we switched to manual instChange side, plugging the pendant to the S side and completed the instChange successfully. Run 4469 26 N startLambda=-67 ------------------------------- We were in focus from the beginning and Son-of-Kent reports good from the start of the run. Skippy showed that we were properly aligned and pointed at frame 13. Frame 30 Lambda -63 start of Science We saw poolNRGangTrim error message in watcher. It did not seem to have any affect on our operation --- gangs were being transferred and frames were being archived. Please see the PROBLEM section for the exact message. If someone can tell us what it means, we appreciate it. nuErr started at 4.2" at the beginning of the run and slowly increased as we tracked higher in ALT. Frame 173 Lambda=-42 skippy reports nuErr=8.9" Frame 332 Lambda=18 skippy report nuErr=11" After this, the nuErr started to decrease. Frame 472 Lambda=3.0 end of Science Frame 485 Lambda=5.01 end of the Drift SoKent reports all is good except for frame20-30 which it called acceptable although the seeing there seemed to be better than some frames which were called good. Run 4470 25 S Lambda=-2 ----------------------- We can finish this stripe barely if all goes well. Around 10:55Z After starting the drift, we noticed that the offset bore-site was not accepted by TCC (we saw in tccMon that Xbore=0.0 and the stripe was 25,O). So we reissued the scanStripe and this time bore-site offset command was accepted. The iop error message right after this incomplete scanStripe is in the problem section. From the message, shortly after the scanStripe was issued, tccClose seems to have taken place. And therefore, timeout happened which probably is why the offset command did not complete. Frame 17 Lambda=-0.4 ramp start Focus and seeing are good from the beginning. Skippy reports all is well too. Frame 34 Lambda=2 Science begins. Frame 40,41 4 dewars of the r frames, we saw many stripes of light (?) go through. The telescope was tracking fine, there were no axis aborted and flat field screen was open. We had photo 1,2,5,6 displaying in r and showed this feature. photo 3 and 4 were showing g frames (there were BEAUTIFUL galaxies going by in g at the time). Jurek saved the frames in /data/scratch/52052 for people to look at. We are wondering if it could have been an airplane or something. Around 11:35Z Jurek started a new iop session to look at the frames he transferred. This hung and did not give him a prompt (it hung before the "Using PT-VME link..." message at the iop startup). He killed his sop session he was no longer using and the iop startup completed. He then tried to start another iop session which hung exactly the same place and it completed when he exited the iop session he just started. When this happened, we had 17 iop.bin running, 9 iop windows open. We think this started to happen about a dark run ago. What has changed??????????? 11:56Z Around Frame 138 Lambda 17 Moon rise. We have only 30min to twilight. We do not have enough time to change instrument and start spectroscopy. So we continue until Watcher complains about sky level. 12:22Z Frame 150 Lambda 20 beginning of twilight Science ends at Lam=23, 3deg away. Watcher has not complained about the sky level nor has the sky level numbers shown in red in Watcher yet. We will continue in twilight until watcher complains about the sky. Frame 174 Lambda 23 end of Science Frame 186 Lambda 25 end of ramp Frame 187 end of the drift Watcher never complained about the sky brightness. Seeing was 1.2-1.4" through this run according to SoKent and reported. We hope the last part of the run is usable. skippy reported the nuErr was smaller for this run (<6"). Run 4471 Normal Donut run. --------------------------- 12:47Z We started to take Jim's normal donuts, but the sky background level started to be in the red for all CCDs in watcher, so we decided to stop. Sorry Jim. 13:00Z We closed. And then started the bias on the telescope inside the dark enclosure. Run 4472 bias on the telescope -------------------------------- Taken in the dark enclosure. 1st endNight started. As we were about to mail runlogs, we found out that runlog for 4470 filed and there was no runlog for this run. We manually made one. We note that since we started the runlog making AFTER we started endNight copied logs from /astrolog/53052 to /skycat, the runlog-4470.txt in /skycat/oplogs/astrolog/53052/ was an empty file. I hate to have to do ANYTHING manually in /skycat, our sacred archive every log/param file space, especially so early in the mroning. But we did copy this file over to /skycat. We are not sure if runlog-4470.txt made it to the tape either. We then found that endNight failed. It complained about ioptape.archlog. It seems to have copied spectro dta and TPM logs, but did not archive any of the gangs! We decided to put in fresh gang tapes and retry endNight. THe second attempt is running as I type this and actually archiving gang files. So we will run away to bed before something bad happens. We emailed Craig, JB, French, Dan and Bruce informing the failed 1st endNight and that the 2nd one is currently running. Here is the error message from endNight: Tue Feb 17 13:52:44 GMT 2004 /data/spectro/53052 finished. Tue Feb 17 13:52:45 GMT 2004 Starting /mcptpm/53052 archiving. 500200 blocks o archive.
