APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday February 18, 2004 (MJD 53054) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Dan Long Night: Atsuko Nitta Steph Snedden Visitors: Martin Gaskell (U. Nebraska) Liz Klimek (U. Nebraska) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Science, yup. Also some clouds and high wind. Four plates declared done with a little signal on a fifth. We saw many TPM communication errors after the telescope was put to bed. They are all in the problems section, are all related to the M1 and M2 blocks and all occurred at the same time (05:17:58Z). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Normal afternoon check. Both spectrographs focus needed adjusting (sp1 +7000, sp2 +3000) no doubt due to the much warmer weather. 23:25Z Doors Open, Fans On. Night: ------ 01:41Z At twilight the clouds thin enough to try spectroscopy. We started with cartridge 4, plate 1636. This plate pointing was good enough to put an FK5 star on the edge of fiber 10 with offsets cleared. We had to pause between exposures to wait on clouds. We could only sneak in one good exposure of 1500 s between clouds before the plate expired. 04:15Z We tried again with cartridge 7, plate 1743. GSotGTF. We waited on clouds again for awhile. Eventually it cleared out, and we went back on the sky. This plate was finished with a total exposure of 2600 s. It became photometric, but there were clouds forming to the southwest, so we chose to stay with spectroscopy. 07:09Z Cartridge 2, plate 1436. GSotGTF. Plate finished with a total exposure time of 2100 s. 08:12Z Cartridge 8, plate 1438. GSotGTF. clouds started to form around us and it was no longer photometric. Still, it was clear where we were pointed and the plate was finished with a total exposure of 2100 s. 09:08Z Cartridge 3, plate 1444. This was the plate where they had trouble finding guide stars last night. Tonight, we had guide stars on slew, BUT note that I heard a slight "clunk" at about the position where the slithead would be near the slithead latches. It sounded like it came from spectro 2. I backed the cartridge back out, then raised it again slowly and looked for a rise in the displayed force on the handpaddle. None was seen, and the cartridge engaged normally. The plate was done in a total exposure of 2200 s. 10:32Z Cartridge 1, plate 1364. No sooner had we mounted this plate than the wind went over the closure limit. We closed. When the wind got high, the Polaris images in DIMM became streaks. The centroiding failed and therefore, the seeing measurements could not be trusted. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 25166, plate -9999 ------- 23:07 25166 0.0 bias ----- sequence 25167, plate -9999 ------- 01:08 25167 0.0 bias ----- sequence 25168, plate 1636 ------- 02:07 25168 10.0 flat 02:10 25169 2.0 arc 02:42 25170 1500.1 target 03:19 25171 746.5 target ----- sequence 25172, plate 1743 ------- 05:01 25172 10.0 flat 05:04 25173 2.0 arc 05:32 25174 673.6 target 06:22 25175 1200.1 target 06:37 25176 700.1 target 06:52 25177 700.1 target 06:55 25178 10.0 flat 06:57 25179 2.0 arc ----- sequence 25180, plate 1436 ------- 07:11 25180 10.0 flat 07:14 25181 2.0 arc 07:33 25182 900.1 target 07:47 25183 600.1 target 08:02 25184 600.1 target ----- sequence 25185, plate 1438 ------- 08:18 25185 10.0 flat 08:20 25186 2.0 arc 08:35 25187 600.1 target 08:53 25188 900.1 target 09:07 25189 600.1 target ----- sequence 25190, plate 1444 ------- 09:23 25190 10.0 flat 09:25 25191 2.0 arc 09:52 25192 900.1 target 10:05 25193 600.1 target 10:19 25194 700.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:29Z 4 0 -27.35 0.0053 48.02 0.0048 157.09 -0.0177 1.000280 05:08Z 7 1743 58.43 0.0042 56.56 0.0039 227.04 -0.0051 1.000350 06:19Z 7 1743 28.24 0.0042 67.01 0.0039 203.95 -0.0051 1.000300 07:22Z 2 1436 148.28 0.0000 74.09 0.0047 -39.32 0.0146 1.000300 08:29Z 8 1438 186.63 -0.0030 76.41 0.0063 8.02 -0.0048 1.000240 09:32Z 3 1444 205.62 -0.0013 73.58 0.0082 32.27 0.0032 1.000330 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL7280 Stays: JL7281 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:29Z 4 0 1.00028 -2764 -952 150 -27 48.0 8.1 21 207 - 1.4 05:08Z 7 1743 1.00035 -3455 -1549 150 59 56.5 7.7 27 213 - 2.0 06:19Z 7 1743 1.00030 -2961 -1215 100 28 67.0 7.3 27 208 - 1.6 07:22Z 2 1436 1.00030 -2961 -1227 100 148 74.1 7.1 19 218 - 1.5 08:29Z 8 1438 1.00024 -2369 -740 100 187 76.4 6.4 25 225 - 1.4 09:32Z 3 1444 1.00033 -3258 -1442 130 206 73.6 5.8 24 200 - 2.0 09:42Z 3 1444 1.00033 -3258 -1400 170 211 72.6 5.6 26 206 - 1.5 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:09Z 47 12 18 227 (SW) -9999 - Cloudy 23:41Z 46 11 17 210 (SSW) -9999 - Cloudy 00:14Z 46 11 19 207 (SSW) -9999 - Cloudy 00:50Z 45 11 21 213 (SSW) -9999 - " 01:21Z 44 10 13 215 (SW) -9999 - pcl 01:53Z 45 8 20 206 (SSW) -9999 - " 02:27Z 45 7 21 208 (SSW) -9999 - " 02:59Z 46 6 21 212 (SSW) -9999 - " 03:31Z 46 7 27 223 (SW) -9999 - " 04:02Z 44 10 18 202 (SSW) -9999 - " 04:32Z 45 10 21 209 (SSW) -9999 - mclear 05:04Z 45 11 23 201 (SSW) -9999 - " 05:36Z 45 10 31 206 (SSW) -9999 - " 06:09Z 45 10 26 208 (SSW) -9999 - " 06:40Z 45 10 24 205 (SSW) -9999 - " 07:14Z 43 10 24 208 (SSW) -9999 - " 07:46Z 44 8 25 211 (SSW) -9999 - " 08:18Z 43 9 21 210 (SSW) -9999 - pcl 08:50Z 43 9 22 203 (SSW) -9999 - " 09:23Z 42 7 24 197 (SSW) -9999 - " 09:55Z 41 5 27 212 (SSW) -9999 - " 10:27Z 41 4 25 237 (WSW) -9999 - " 10:59Z 41 5 32 229 (SW) -9999 - mclear 11:32Z 40 6 26 221 (SW) -9999 - " 12:04Z 40 4 30 221 (SW) -9999 - " ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:25Z Doors Open, Fans On. 01:31Z Enclosure opened. 10:33Z Enclosure closed.
