APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday March 19, 2004 (MJD 53084) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Scot Kleinman (swing) Mike Harvanek Jurek Krzesinski Huan Lin (visitor) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Day: No problems to report. Many thanks to Scot for covering day shift on very short notice. Night: Finished 9 plates (1758, 1440, 1619, 1453, 1368, 1375, 1379, 1380, 1348). There are 2 guider flat issues. 1) What happened to the 2nd set of yellow box/red circle overlays that were drawn previously in saoImage to help us determine if the guide fibers are centered properly during the guider flat? There appears to be only one set of overlays drawn now. 2) JB wanted to know which cartridges had guider flats that did not properly center the guide fibers on the first try. Tonight we had to do more than 1 guider flat for cartridges 3, 8, 5, 1, 9, and 4. Cartridge 5, guide fiber 4 is either damaged or needs to be cleaned. The guide star looked like a donut while all the other guide stars were clearly in focus. The orange (grade 2) nitrogen bottle in the lower enclosure was swapped out. The empty is against the south wall with the full ones. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- A postCal was done as an initial collimation check. The first postCal was done with the enclosure lights on. The 2nd postCal showed all quantities were in spec and since time was short, a full blown collimation check was not performed. Night: ------ DIMM good news: The VNC window on monx3 was still alive this afternoon. bad news: The VNC on monx3 disappeared at approximately the same time we attempted to use the console at the telescope. The DIMM software was running at the time the window disappeared. The admin window is what came up on the console at the telescope. The software was restarted, a star was found and seeing measurements were started. Note that when the star was finally found on the ccd, its position in the finder scope was different than last night. Partly cloudy at sunset so we begin with spectroscopy. Plate 1758 (cartridge 7): FK5 was found after previous offsets were cleared. There is no guide star in fiber 6. The fiber appears to be enabled and this plate does not appear on the list of Known Spectroscopic Plates with Missing Guide Stars. Perhaps guide fiber 6 came unplugged? This plate was finished in 3 exposures (3120 s total). The postCal request came too late. During QA on this plate, bias 25701 r2 showed a weird "fuzzy" patch in the lower right region centered on row 1652 running from column 1066 to 2092. Bias 25696 r2 was examined and this patch was not present. This feature was not visible in the flat, arc or data frames that followed. Perhaps 25701 r2 should not be used for reductions and someone might want to have a look to make sure it's nothing serious. Plate 1440 (cartridge 3): We had a problem with guider frame size on this plate. When a gcam was issued it would not display to saoImage. After issuing a stopMon, startMon and showGuiderFrame the following message was spit out: Error: Star 6 won't fit in an 454*454 region, scaled 150 Using a startMon -simple solved the problem. An fk5 was found without clearing offsets. This plate was finished in 3 exposures (2400 s total). Plate 1619 (cartridge 8): Guide stars on the gotoField. Finished in 3 exposures (2520 s total). Plate 1453 (cartridge 5): FK5 found after offsets were cleared. The star in guide fiber 4 looks like a donut while the other 10 are definitely in focus. Perhaps the fiber is dirty, plugged at an angle or damaged? Finished in 3 exposures (1920 s total). Although currently photometric, the satellite image shows that it's unlikely to remain that way for long so we continue with spectroscopy. Plate 1368 (cartridge 1): FK5 finally found after clearing offsets and doing some fishing. Done in 3 exposures (1920 s total). Still photometric but clouds are close. We stay with spectroscopy. Plate 1375 (cartridge 9): Guide stars on the gotoField without clearing offsets (which were substantial). Done in 3 exposures (2040 s total). Still photometric but there are clouds skirting the edge of the cloud camera so we stay with spectroscopy. Plate 1379 (cartridge 6): FK5 found without clearing offsets. Fiber 11 is enabled and guiding so Scot's iop update looks like it worked. Thanks. Done in 3 exposures (2220 s total). Clouds skirt the edges of the cloud camera with increasing frequency. We'll stick with spectroscopy for the rest of the night since there are only 1.5 hours until twilight begins. Plate 1380 (cartridge 4): FK5 found 20" east after clearing offsets. Done in 3 exposures (1920 s total). Plate 1348 (cartridge 2): Guide stars on the gotoField without clearing offsets. Done in 3 exposures (2160 s total). endNight rejoiced. We swapped out the orange (grade 2) nitrogen bottle in the lower enclosure because it was empty. The empty is sitting in the rack against the wall with the full ones. The tag fell off the empty so we rolled it up and stuck it in the bottle top. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4523 23:01Z 23:13Z 100 O -127.65 -124.56 35 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): YES UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 25693, plate 1379 ------- 23:07 25693 0.0 bias 23:43 25694 0.0 bias ----- sequence 25695, plate -9999 ------- 00:19 25695 0.0 bias 00:22 25696 0.0 bias ----- sequence 25697, plate 1379 ------- 00:28 25697 10.0 flat test -
