APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday March 23, 2004 (MJD 53088) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Pete Newman Night: Atsuko Nitta, Howard Brewington ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We declared cart 06, plate 1324 done. Had a problem with the Flat Field Screen (FFS); see log and problems section. We had critical error about the imager's ion pump; see log. Some guider notes for Connie are in the log. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift ----------- See end of this log for details of spectrographic focus adjustments. The live larva (formally, an Army Cutworm) of a miller moth was found in one of the dormatory bedrooms...it begins! Night ---------- We had clouds at twilight and rain approaching from the west. So, we waited. 10:10Z sky started to clear. 10:15Z cartridge 06, Plate 1324 (chunk67). Field was found with Fk5 after clearing the offsets and then offsetting the telescope by 15" to the east. This plate was finished in three exposures. 10:36Z We had a problem with the FFS; see problems section for details. 12:02Z We had a critical error about the imager's ion pump as stated by Watcher: ion pump pr (1.97 : 2004-03-24 12:02:40Z) We contacted Jon Brinkmann. We also contacted Jim Gunn about this problem; he said that he would keep an eye on it. Misc. Watcher errors in the problem section. endNight finished and was happy. The following is for Connie: gimg# note ----- ----------------------- 198 flat gotoField. The overlay looked like all fibers center were correctly identified. I think I saw the old overlay for a breif second before the new overlay overwrote it. No guiding problem. 220 1st focus frame. From the focus loop PG plot, I think this frame did not arrive in time to be analyzed. The software, I believe, used the frame before this one to estimate the FWHM and wased used in the plot. 227 flat preCalib. THe overlay looked like sop knew the center of the fibers correctly. 228 restarted the guider. 229 This took a bit longer than usual for the frame to show up in the display. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4529 22:00Z 22:27Z 100 O -138.94 -132.37 54 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 25773, plate -9999 ------- 22:09 25773 0.0 bias ----- sequence 25774, plate 1599 ------- 22:14 25774 2.1 arc test 22:16 25775 2.1 arc test 22:25 25776 2.1 arc test 22:28 25777 2.1 arc test 22:36 25778 10.0 flat test 22:38 25779 2.0 arc test ----- sequence 25780, plate -9999 ------- 23:39 25780 0.0 bias 23:59 25781 0.0 bias ----- sequence 25782, plate 1324 ------- 10:33 25782 10.0 flat 10:35 25783 2.0 arc 11:00 25784 900.1 target 11:25 25785 1200.1 target 11:49 25786 1200.1 target 11:54 25787 10.0 flat 11:56 25788 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10:41Z 6 1324 211.69 -0.0023 61.70 0.0058 49.72 0.0086 1.000170 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL7465 Stays: JL7466 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10:41Z 6 1324 1.00017 -1679 -42 200 212 61.7 6.9 17 316 gdr 1.3 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:44Z 54 37 10 263 (W) 461 - clouds 22:17Z 50 36 1 281 (W) 448 - 22:47Z 49 36 8 322 (NW) 406 - 23:17Z 49 33 6 279 (W) 386 - clouds 23:49Z 48 34 5 274 (W) 436 - 00:21Z 47 33 4 277 (W) 447 - 01:05Z 46 35 10 265 (W) 475 - clouds 01:37Z 47 34 8 272 (W) 457 - 02:09Z 45 35 15 294 (WNW) 6725 - 02:42Z 44 32 12 282 (WNW) 24805 - 03:14Z 43 31 10 343 (NNW) 15743 - clouds 03:46Z 47 26 10 260 (W) 2934 - 04:18Z 46 28 8 347 (NNW) 732 - 04:51Z 45 30 11 23 (NNE) 1313 - clouds 05:23Z 46 28 14 336 (NNW) 531 - 05:55Z 45 28 7 294 (WNW) 667 - 06:27Z 45 29 10 12 (NNE) 1357 - clouds 06:59Z 46 30 9 8 (N) 1058 - 07:32Z 46 30 16 321 (NW) 369 - 08:04Z 45 30 9 345 (NNW) 417 - clouds 08:36Z 45 30 11 337 (NNW) 413 - 09:08Z 45 31 16 332 (NNW) 500 - 09:41Z 44 31 8 312 (NW) 522 - 10:14Z 44 31 14 340 (NNW) 628 - clear 10:46Z 44 31 12 316 (NW) 749 - 11:17Z 43 31 13 299 (WNW) 598 - 11:50Z 42 31 5 10 (N) 522 - clear 12:21Z 42 31 2 318 (NW) 471 - 12:51Z 42 31 14 327 (NNW) 618 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:04Z Enclosure doors cracked, fans on. 03:30Z doors closed fans off. 08:15Z doors cracked, fans on. 10:10Z Enclosure off 12:15Z Enclosure on, fan off. Although the FFS was open per a visual inspection, the mcp showed it as closed. See info below: Status: Bad (0) Bit: I1_26 10 Status: Bad (0) Bit: I1_26 10 Leaf Screen 6 open status bit (enabled) Leaf Screen 6 open status bit (enabled) In the telescope System Status GUI, the petal was shown to be in an intermediate state (petal was yellow in color). And then in Watcher, the got the following error: Only 3 flat field screen petals are open (2004-03-24 10:36:32Z sdssmcp) We were able to collect science photos, but some time was wasted while we waited for the sop session to time-out it's request to open the FFS. We'll hazard a guess that it's a switch which needs some attention. We filed a PR. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ---=== Misc Watcher Errors ===--- dewar (Imager Dewar Scale Communications Fault:: 2004-03-24 02:02:41Z) tracking (Excessive Az Tracking Error:: 2004-03-24 10:15:05Z) m2 mig (Communications Fault: 2004-03-24 09:19:50Z) Text="pointing error probe does not exist:check inst data": (2004-03-24 10:20:03Z) rotator (correction for rotator 800491 is too large (2004-03-24 10:15:57Z sdssmcp): 2004-03-24 10:16:10Z )
