APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday August 24, 2004 (MJD 53242) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek Scot Kleinman Rich Kron ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- 3 plates finished (1895, 1897, 1896). Good data obtained on another plate (1909). A PR against SoS was filed for possible inaccurate signal-to-noise numbers and numerous warnings for Segue plates. See the log for details. This PR may need to be filed against Segue but we did not see this PR category. Some altitude fiducials were missed tonight. See the log for details. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- No problems to report during setup and checkout. Night: ------ Totally overcast at sunset. Rising dust and humidity kept us from ventilating until 03:50Z. Threatening clouds kept the enclosure on until 05:30Z. Moony and partly cloudy so we begin with spectroscopy. Plate 1909 (cartridge 2): Segue faint. Guide stars on the gotoField. Three exposures (3600 sec total) were obtained before this plate expired. Even with previous data combined, this plate was still not finished. Note that the last exposure completed about 10 minutes after this plate expired. Plate 1895 (cartridge 9): Segue faint. Guide stars on the gotoField. When combined with last night's data (53241), this plate was finished in 2 exposures (2400 sec total). It is worth noting that although conditions (seeing, efficiency) were similar for plates 1909 and 1895 (both Segue faint plates), the amount of signal obtained for the 1909 exposures was about half that of the 1895 exposures even though the exposure times were identical. We thought that the moon might be a factor (it was up for 1909 and down for 1895) but weren't sure if this could account for it. Perhaps someone should have a look and make certain that SoS is accurately reporting signal-to-noise for these plates. Also, SoS reported whopping fibers on plate 1895. Plate 1897 (cartridge 7): Segue faint. Guide stars on the gotoField. This plate was finished in 3 exposures (3600 sec total). At this point (about 10:00Z) Scot noticed that we had no altitude fiducial crossings after 08:30Z which corresponded to the inst change between plates 1895 and 1897. However, it did not seem to affect pointing as we had guide stars on the gotoField for both plate 1897 and plate 1896 (see below). Even if the fiducial at 89 is not reading in either direction, we should still have gotten a crossing at 75 because the telescope's altitude position at the beginning of plate 1896 was 70 degrees. Plate 1896 (cartridge 6): Segue. Guide stars on the gotoField. While observing this plate, Scot's mozilla (running from hello) started to slow down landru. Scot decided to kill mozilla and landru hung. Fortunately, Scot was able to log in from another machine, kill his connection to hello and bring back landru without problems. This plate was finished with bonus signal (because there was not enough time to mount another cartridge). Four exposures (3600 sec total) were obtained. We finally got altitude fiducial crossings when going to inst change. SoS gave scattered light, sky residual and whopping fiber warnings. These warnings have been common for Segue plates (but not Segue faint plates) over the last few nights. So, a PR was filed against SoS. This PR may need to be filed against Segue but this was not a PR category option that we could find. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4791 23:53Z 00:05Z 100 O 41.09 44.13 33 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): YES UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 28328, plate -9999 ------- 23:41 28328 0.0 bias ----- sequence 28329, plate 1895 ------- 23:54 28329 10.0 flat 23:56 28330 2.0 arc ----- sequence 28331, plate -9999 ------- 00:37 28331 0.0 bias ----- sequence 28332, plate 1909 ------- 15.3 12.2 16.0 15.0 not done 06:02 28332 10.0 flat 06:04 28333 2.0 arc 06:27 28334 1200.1 target 06:50 28335 1200.1 target 07:15 28336 1200.1 target 07:19 28337 10.0 flat 07:21 28338 2.0 arc ----- sequence 28339, plate 1895 ------- 23.4 19.0 22.6 20.8 tonight 07:36 28339 10.0 flat 17.9 13.3 17.7 13.3 53241 07:39 28340 2.0 arc ------------------- 08:02 28341 1200.1 target 41.3 32.3 40.3 34.1 DONE 08:25 28342 1200.1 target ----- sequence 28343, plate 1897 ------- 45.6 41.4 55.4 48.9 DONE 08:38 28343 10.0 flat 08:40 28344 2.0 arc 09:04 28345 1200.1 target 09:27 28346 1200.1 target 09:50 28347 1200.1 target ----- sequence 28348, plate 1896 ------- 29.1 55.2 38.6 34.0 DONE 10:03 28348 10.0 flat 10:06 28349 2.0 arc 10:24 28350 900.1 target 10:42 28351 900.1 target 11:00 28352 900.1 target 11:18 28353 900.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 06:01Z 2 1909 -13.42 -0.0027 56.49 0.0013 168.66 0.0133 1.000300 07:48Z 9 1895 30.67 -0.0017 69.59 0.0000 206.25 0.0120 1.000300 08:44Z 7 1897 34.10 -0.0030 69.07 0.0013 209.11 -0.0011 1.000300 10:20Z 6 1896 -34.48 -0.0007 69.02 0.0019 150.41 0.0122 1.000200 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL7724 Stays: JL7725 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 06:01Z 2 1909 1.00030 -2961 -1191 100 -13 56.5 10.7 14 282 ---- 1.1" 07:47Z 9 1895 1.00030 -2961 -1220 100 31 69.5 10.2 12 285 ---- 1.2" 08:44Z 7 1897 1.00030 -2961 -1219 100 34 69.1 10.0 15 299 ---- 1.4" 10:22Z 6 1896 1.00020 -1974 -451 50 -36 68.8 10.1 16 314 ---- 1.0" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:46Z 58 43 19 239 (WSW) -9999 - 23:18Z 58 43 13 242 (WSW) -9999 - 23:50Z 57 41 11 270 (W) -9999 - 00:21Z 57 38 11 243 (WSW) -9999 - mostly cloudy 00:49Z 55 41 14 275 (W) -9999 - mostly cloudy 01:22Z 54 41 10 274 (W) -9999 - mostly cloudy 01:54Z 54 40 12 262 (W) -9999 - totally cloudy 02:26Z 51 43 11 336 (NNW) -9999 - totally cloudy 02:58Z 49 43 7 12 (NNE) -9999 - mostly cloudy 03:30Z 52 41 9 268 (W) -9999 - mostly cloudy 04:03Z 52 41 10 281 (W) -9999 - mostly cloudy 04:33Z 51 42 12 286 (WNW) -9999 - mostly cloudy 05:03Z 51 42 6 278 (W) -9999 - partly cloudy 05:35Z 51 40 15 292 (WNW) -9999 - partly cloudy 06:05Z 51 40 16 284 (WNW) -9999 - partly cloudy 06:37Z 50 40 17 286 (WNW) -9999 - partly cloudy 07:07Z 50 40 18 287 (WNW) -9999 - partly cloudy 07:38Z 50 40 16 296 (WNW) -9999 - partly cloudy 08:08Z 50 40 17 297 (WNW) -9999 - partly cloudy 08:39Z 50 39 12 284 (WNW) -9999 - partly cloudy 09:10Z 49 39 12 308 (NW) -9999 - partly cloudy 09:42Z 50 38 17 310 (NW) -9999 - partly cloudy 10:14Z 50 38 13 312 (NW) -9999 - partly cloudy 10:46Z 49 39 15 318 (NW) -9999 - partly cloudy 11:17Z 50 39 16 302 (WNW) -9999 - partly cloudy 11:48Z 49 39 7 337 (NNW) -9999 - partly cloudy ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 03:50Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 05:30Z Enclosure off. 11:30Z Enclosure on, doors closed, fans and blowers off, louvers closed.
