APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday September 12, 2004 (MJD 53261) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek Jurek Krzesinksi Visitors: Jackie Diehl (NSO) Maria Kazachenko (NSO Undergraduate Summer Research Assistant; St. Petersburg State University, St. Petersburg, Russia) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Finished 3 plates (1909, 1901, 1881). Good data on another plate (1899). We got the SecDesMountOutOfRange error all 4 times we went to inst change. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Spectrograph collimation was adjusted. Since there was no swing swift support today, there was not time to do the tests of the secondary D actuator that Dan suggested. Two windscreen touches during telescope checkout: altitude (Windscreen touched in altitude: DOWN (2004-09-13 00:28:56Z sdssmcp): 2004-09-13 00:29:15Z) and azimuth (Windscreen touched in azimuth: CW (2004-09-13 00:27:09Z sdssmcp): 2004-09-13 00:27:21Z) Night: ------ Partly cloudy so we begin with spectroscopy. Plate 1909 (cartridge 2): Segue faint. Guide stars on the gotoField. When combined with previous data (53241, 53242), this plate was finished in 5 exposures (6000 sec total). There were two whopping fiber warnings. We got the SecDesMountOutOfRange error when going to inst change: SecDesMountOutOfRange="FFFTF":: (2004-09-13 04:28:03Z) We thought about switching to imaging but the sky looks hazy even though the cloud camera standard deviation is low (< 4). So, we stay with spectroscopy for now. Plate 1901 (cartridge 3): Segue faint. Guide stars on the gotoField. This plate was finished in 8 exposures (10,200 sec total). There were whopping fiber warnings for 6 of the 8 exposures. Seeing was quite variable during this plate, getting up to 3" at some points so it was good that we did not switch to imaging. We pushed this plate a bit and the last exposure for this plate completed about 15 minutes after the plate had officially expired. Although we believe it is clear, the wind is from the east and the seeing is variable so we continue with spectroscopy. We got another SecDesMountOutOfRange="FFFTF":: (2004-09-13 08:15:00Z) when going to inst change. Plate 1881 (cartridge 6): Segue faint. After clearing the previous offsets, there were guide stars on the gotoField. This plate was finished in 5 exposures (6300 sec total). LOTS of whopping fiber warnings. We pushed this plate some too and the last exposure completed about 8 minutes after the plate had expired. We got another SecDesMountOutOfRange="FFFTF":: (2004-09-13 10:40:42Z) when going to inst change. Plate 1899 (cartridge 7): Segue faint. Guide stars on the gotoField. We obtained 2 exposures (2400 sec total) before the sky became too bright. Lots of whopping fiber warnings. We switched to a beginning of the night cartridge for tomorrow night and got SecDesMountOutOfRange="FFFTF":: (2004-09-13 11:49:46Z) when we went to inst change. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4824 23:57Z 00:13Z 100 O 60.80 64.85 41 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): YES UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 28460, plate -9999 ------- 23:48 28460 0.0 bias 23:58 28461 0.0 bias ----- sequence 28461, plate 1900 ------- 00:17 28462 10.0 flat 00:19 28463 2.0 arc 00:37 28464 0.0 bias 00:40 28465 10.0 flat 00:43 28466 2.0 arc 00:46 28467 2.1 arc 00:48 28468 2.1 arc 00:58 28469 2.1 arc 01:01 28470 2.1 arc ----- sequence 28471, plate 1909 ------- 6.0 4.1 6.7 5.2 53241 02:20 28471 10.0 flat 15.1 12.5 15.8 14.8 53242 02:22 28472 2.0 arc 48.7 37.8 57.7 45.8 tonight 02:50 28473 1200.1 target ------------------- 03:13 28474 1200.1 target 69.8 54.4 80.2 65.8 DONE 03:36 28475 1200.1 target 03:58 28476 1200.1 target 04:21 28477 1200.1 target 04:24 28478 10.0 flat 04:26 28479 2.0 arc ----- sequence 28480, plate 1901 ------- 69.3 52.4 64.6 55.7 DONE 04:42 28480 10.0 flat 04:45 28481 2.0 arc 05:09 28482 1200.1 target 05:31 28483 1200.1 target 05:54 28484 1200.1 target 06:17 28485 1200.1 target 06:20 28486 10.0 flat 06:22 28487 2.0 arc 06:47 28488 1200.1 target 07:10 28489 1200.1 target 07:35 28490 1200.1 target 08:08 28491 1800.1 target 08:11 28492 10.0 flat 08:13 28493 2.0 arc ----- sequence 28494, plate 1881 ------- 72.3 64.8 64.7 50.8 DONE 08:30 28494 10.0 flat 08:32 28495 2.0 arc 08:56 28496 1200.1 target 09:19 28497 1200.1 target 09:42 28498 1200.1 target 10:05 28499 1200.1 target 10:08 28500 10.0 flat 10:10 28501 2.0 arc 10:39 28502 1500.1 target ----- sequence 28503, plate 1899 ------- 27.6 17.1 29.2 20.2 not done 10:50 28503 10.0 flat 10:52 28504 2.0 arc 11:16 28505 1200.1 target 11:46 28506 1200.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:29Z 2 1909 43.28 0.0003 48.50 0.0026 215.09 0.0089 1.000320 04:56Z 3 1901 34.36 0.0003 52.05 0.0026 208.22 0.0089 1.000310 08:39Z 6 1881 251.32 0.0000 74.38 0.0000 81.76 0.0000 1.000210 11:00Z 7 1899 -56.84 0.0000 60.25 0.0000 133.39 0.0000 1.000210 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL7747 Stays: JL7748 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:28Z 2 1909 1.00032 -3159 -1504 -75 44 48.3 15.8 15 142 ---- 1.4" 04:56Z 3 1901 1.00031 -3060 -1389 -30 34 52.1 13.5 18 144 ---- 1.9" 08:39Z 6 1881 1.00021 -2073 -622 -30 251 74.5 14.4 9 182 ---- 1.7" 10:59Z 7 1899 1.00021 -2073 -635 -70 -57 60.3 13.5 12 180 ---- 1.3" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:29Z 67 35 6 234 (SW) 701 - 00:00Z 68 34 11 248 (WSW) 703 - 00:32Z 67 35 9 259 (W) 594 - partly cloudy 01:04Z 64 35 9 220 (SW) 651 - partly cloudy 01:34Z 61 34 9 231 (SW) 722 - partly cloudy 02:05Z 60 35 9 148 (SSE) 676 - partly cloudy 02:35Z 60 38 11 145 (SE) 734 - hazy? 03:06Z 59 37 16 141 (SE) 660 - hazy? 03:37Z 57 36 18 135 (SE) 592 - hazy? 04:07Z 57 37 19 139 (SE) 526 - hazy? 04:37Z 56 38 15 141 (SE) 520 - hazy? 05:08Z 56 38 19 136 (SE) 468 - clear? 05:40Z 56 38 16 135 (SE) 511 - clear? 06:12Z 55 40 17 143 (SE) 522 - clear? 06:43Z 54 42 13 135 (SE) 560 - clear? 07:14Z 53 46 15 153 (SSE) 634 - clear? 07:45Z 55 41 8 172 (S) 604 - clear 08:16Z 57 34 12 180 (S) 528 - clear 08:47Z 56 36 11 180 (S) 511 - clear 09:18Z 57 35 11 195 (SSW) 547 - clear 09:50Z 57 36 11 199 (SSW) 480 - clear 10:23Z 56 38 8 180 (S) 534 - light clouds 10:53Z 56 39 9 182 (S) 540 - light clouds 11:23Z 55 39 9 181 (S) 556 - light clouds 11:56Z 55 40 11 190 (S) 559 - partly cloudy 12:28Z 53 40 12 198 (SSW) 560 - partly cloudy ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:15Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 01:20Z Enclosure off. 12:05Z Enclosure on, doors closed, fans and blowers off, louvers closed.
