APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday October 15, 2004 (MJD 53294) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Pete Newman Night: John Barentine, Atusko Nitta Visitors: Josh Frieman, John Marriner, Ben Dilday (SNe Team, FNAL and U. Chicago) Other diners: Craig Loomis, Steph Snedden, Russet MicMillan, Jurek Krzesinski Morning callers: Hercules ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Supernova Program Imaging and Gourmet Night Feasting ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We got SN data (around 7hrs) We had difficulty getting skippy to run at the beginning of the night. skippy usually fails when the pointing is bad. We found no fiducial too large to correct, no slip or anything else saying why our pointing was not good. skippy started to work again after refiducializing for the second time. We logged the time we lost to hardware problem but we have no idea what it is. Even when skippy ran, every other time or so, we had large errors on mu (thousand arsec errors). We later noticed that the watcher's latch status and the latch box (by the telescope) did not agree on the position of saddle2 latch. We remounted the imager and all was well. We saw no huge muErr after we remounted the imager. French is aware of the above problem and Wendell will make sure all is well with the imager/telescope/latches during the day. Feast ===== Pete's Black Bean Stew with Basmati Beef, pork, tofu pseudo-Chinese dishes with rice Pumpkin soup Snedden family special Apple Cider Spaghetti with meat mushroom sauce Pot stickers Ice cream Coffee (home roasted, of course) SN team's sacrificial pie to Dan's father, the Weather God Jurek's ciasto (Polish sweet bread) ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift =========== The imager tapes from last night were put into juno this afternoon, but the apo_daily_tapes command failed quicky complaning that "mt found status ONLINE but dd command failed" for each tape drive. I tried unloading and reloading the tapes but got the same response. The imager is already mounted on the telescope for tonight's supernovae observations, so spectrograph focus, guide camera operation and initial bias checks were not performed. All spectrograph camera and LN2 temperatures and mechanical communictions were checked. The pre-flight imager bias (run 4888) was made with the imager mounted and the T-bars unlatched, starting ~2 hr before sunset but with all ights off in the upper enclosure. We hoped this will suffice for data reduction. No instances of anomalous bias levels were noted from the dewar monitors. Well, that was the plan, but after endDrift, I found someone (me?!) had indeed turned (left?) the lights on in the enclosure, so this run is NOT good as a bias. Have the stow position indicator lights just behind the sirrobert laptop failed? They were not illuminated with the telescope at (121, 30). Night ======= 00:34Z Opened with imager. Sky is not photometric with some high cirrus. DIMM shows sub" seeing. The stow position green indicator lights were both on when we brought the telescope to stow position after opening. We don't know why they did not come on earlier when Pete did his checkout. We did not do anything special to make them come on. Run 4989 Bias on the telescope 01:41Z Run 4890 82N lam=112 Seeing is good from the beginning 01:52Z Twilight is over Frame 30 Lambda 114.75 Skippy failed repaetedly despite of no too large to correct fiducial errors or any other indication that our pointin gis off. We decided to stop this run and cross fiducial on both Az and Alt, force them and rescan. 02:03Z Back to 82N. Run 4891 Skippy won't run! Ack! We noted that skippy.log had only write permission by John. So altered that, just in case that was a cause of some problem. Nope. We still cannot get skippy to run. Since all our previous skippy-not-running comes from the pointing being bad, we decide to try going to different part of the stripe and see if it works. We try going to 82 S 150. 02:17Z Run 4892 82S 150 Finally we had skippy run. But guess what the muErr, AzErr and elErr were! HUGE (thousands of arcsec). The following is the ouput of skippy grepped from the murmur log. The nuErr was 12.5"so we applied offset and tried running skippy again. This time we got sensible numbers and found 62 stars. 2004-10-16 02:28:20Z sdsshost IDA 51500 iop_I_astromTalk 2004-10-16 02:28:21Z sdsshost IDA 51500 iop_I_astromTalk THETAF = -0.0026 degrees, -9.42 arcsec 2004-10-16 02:28:21Z sdsshost IDA 51500 iop_I_astromTalk CT = 0.39599 arcsec/pixel 2004-10-16 02:28:21Z sdsshost IDA 51500 iop_I_astromTalk SCALEF = 16.5966 arcsec/mm 2004-10-16 02:28:21Z sdsshost IDA 51500 iop_I_astromTalk AMU0 = 335.9589 degrees 2004-10-16 02:28:21Z sdsshost IDA 51500 iop_I_astromTalk ANU0 = 0.0035 degrees 2004-10-16 02:28:21Z sdsshost IDA 51500 iop_I_astromTalk NCAT = 36 2004-10-16 02:28:21Z sdsshost IDA 51500 iop_I_astromTalk NSTARS = 24 2004-10-16 02:28:21Z sdsshost IDA 51500 iop_I_astromTalk AZ = 143.4534 degrees 2004-10-16 02:28:21Z sdsshost IDA 51500 iop_I_astromTalk EL = 51.3069 degrees 2004-10-16 02:28:21Z sdsshost IDA 51500 iop_I_astromTalk 2004-10-16 02:28:21Z sdsshost IDA 51500 iop_I_astromTalk raBoreErr: 2140.3", decBoreErr: 12.5" 2004-10-16 02:28:21Z sdsshost IDA 51500 iop_I_astromTalk azErr: -2992.6", elErr: -1050.4" 2004-10-16 02:28:21Z sdsshost IDA 51500 iop_I_astromTalk muErr: 2140.3", nuErr: 12.5" 2004-10-16 02:28:22Z sdsshost IDA 51500 iop_I_astromTalk We then went back to 82N and tried skippy. But it only found 2 stars although the numbers were more sensible and we did not get 1000" errors anywhere. We decided to start over again, i.e. we did: axis stop set inst=imager axis init offset calib /pabs and then another scanStripe command to bring the telescope to 82N in the middle of the stripe. Skippy still did not run. :( In desperation, we moved the telescope to yet another stripe (72 N 100). Still skippy fails. We give up and stop the run and pretend as if we just got the telescope and refiducialize all axes and try again. We did this at the telescope so that we can visually check around the telescope to make sure all is well. We also brought the telescope at instChange position and checked the latch status to ensure all were in the right positions. They were. Run 4893 We restart with 82N. skippy ran! nuErr was 21". We corrected for this. We checked skippy again after correcting the pointing. Atsuko noted that when John runs skippy from iop, the results were not dumped into murmurlog and hence will not be grepped by logTool. We then found out that this is only true for one of John's iop window. Frame 31 is the first good frame after doing offset. After verifying that our offsets were good, we stopped this run to restart afresh. 04:24Z Run 4894 82 N lambda 141 skippy on frame 11 is happy. We are in focus from beginning. seeing is around 1.5" -- bouncing around a bit. It is also photometric. 04:38Z skippy on frame 16 again has LARGE offset in AZ, mu, el, raBoreErr. (See skippy section for actual numbers) 04:40Z The following skippy had reasonable errors. 04:49Z Son of Kent says all the data is bad seeing now. Frame 180, lam=167 SoKent says the seeing is now acceptable, but now we are no longer photometric. 06:32Z lambda=173 stopped the telescope. We noticed that in the watcher telescope system status cartoon, one of the saddle latch (saddle latch2) was in the bad position. We moved the telescope to instChange position and checked the latch panel again and it said all latches were latched. We unlatched and latched all latches again and then checked the system status cartoon which said that the saddle2 latch was in bad position. We unlatched the latches, brought the imager down slightly and then up again and relatched. This time the cartoon said saddle2 latch was in the right place. We do not know if the this was a sensor problem or not. As far as the latch panel was concerned all latches were in the right position. Why did the latch positions not agree with the sensor(?) which tells the PLC and hence the Watcher ? We continue our SN imaging. 06:50Z 82N lam=170 Seeing is not good (1.5-2"). But skippy is good from the beginning. In-focus from the beginning. We still have some cirrus. ~09:30Z More clouds moving in..... Frame 440 Lam=-125. We have less than an hour before twilight. So we will continue this run until twilight. 12:47Z Frame 507 We stopped the run due to twilight. We put the imager into the doghouse and put the corrector lenes on the telescope, but no cartridge. The counter weight is at the buttom to keep the telescope balanced. 12:35Z French called. We talked about the pointing problem and latch status inconsistency we saw tonight. He will contact Wendell (on-call engineer) to have a visual checkout on the telescope/latches etc. to make sure nothing is loose or wrong. endNight running..... ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run
