APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday October 22, 2004 (MJD 53301) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Pete Newman Night: Steph Snedden, Atsuko Nitta Support: Craig Loomis Visitors: Fritz de Jongh (SNe Team, FNAL) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shake-up testing then science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- o sdssProcedure 1_95 checked. o bias vectors for some of the chips show fluctuation between two levels. Is this the odd/even effect? Connie -- could you look at the gif images /skycat/imager/53301/4912-25*gif? o Finished plate 1557. Signals on 1865. We spent about 1.5hrs trying to get sp2 back in spec before observing 1865 during the second half of the night. o When it was too moony to do spectroscopy, we decided to get some SN data. THis data contains cloud, moon, poor seeing. Good data to test the limit of the limits of the SN data reduction pipeline. o ODH sensor went off twice for unknown reasons. Both times, it fixed itself. o DIMM lost Polaris under photometric condition. Steph will investigate tomorrow. o We will have to have some plates with signal unplugged. Boooo. We think we have unfinished plates because we listened to Schubert's Unfinished Symphony. Atsuko will send out the unplugging email. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift =========== During preflight checks, I found water on the floor in the lower enclosure below the west windbaffle drive motor, and some drips coming from the motor itself, evidently rain that got into the enclosure. There was also water on the floor in the upper enclosure under the doghouse, as well as in the "usual" places around the edges of the building. During the spectro focus checks, the west-most fuse in the arc lamp power supply blew, so the HgCd lamps would not operate. We strongly suspect this is due to the ingress of water from above. Given this is a 250V PSU, this represents a considerable safety hazard. The caveat regarding slews across the 90deg altitude fiducial reported in recent nights still applies. During the doghouse bias, several errors were encountered. See problems section for details. The spectrographs' focus positions were checked and adjusted. See end of log for details. Night ======= Steph finished the only shake item (check the procedure changes) before sunset. 00:30Z We opened with cart4. It is chilly and moony. Atsuko dropped the key that goes into the box to move the building when she was trying to plug into the box. The key fell through the grates outside the enclosure, but fortunately, was caught right outside the lower enclosure door. 01:05Z With the twilight and moon, we decide to got fk5 star. Seeing is around 1.8". But the mirror is still catching up to the airtemp. So the seeing will probably improve. 01:56Z SoS reports the sky is too bright for the first science exposure. Not surprising since the moony part of tonight is suppose to be shakeUp. We will change the exposure time just in case that will help. 02:10Z The ODH sensor at the lower enclosure went off. We could hear the beep via the PT intercom and see the flashes via the IR camera. As we walked to the telescope to investigate, the beep stopped. We saw no anomaly around the telescope. Did a moth fly to the sensor? FYI, T=2.1C when this happened. 02:30Z The second exposure is also bad. Since there is no other plates with reasonably Zappa numbers that we can do until cart 6 plate 1907 is available at 05:30Z, we will alter tonight's science plan. Sky is photometric. So we decided to do SN imaging until 05:30Z. SN group needs moony data anyway. Fritz watched instChange so that he can help Steph to get the imager off the telescope Sunday morning (Sat. night is SN night and Steph will be the only SDSS observer to operate the telescope and will need Fritz's help to dismount the imager in the morning.) When Steph cleared offsets from SOPGUI, it did not clear the offset. So she did so in TCC directly. Right after checking the balance of the telescope with the imager, sirrobert became so confused that I could no longer operate. We rebooted the badly behaving sirrobert. 03:01Z Run 4912 Bias on the telescope. We monitored the display to make sure the bias looked fine since we are taking it in the moony condition. 03:16Z Run 4913 82N 130 Now the imager is mounted the sky is non-photometric. But this is fine for SN imaging. The seeing is also poor (around 2"). skippy says nuErr= 22.4" . So we correct. Frame 34 Offsetting the telescope. Frame 36 The clouds move in and BOY it is scattering LOTS of moonlight. Frame 39 lam=136. Start of science. But with lots of clouds and moon. Watcher is complaining about seeing, astroline, empty gangs and sky. Wind is picking up a lot. This run contains moon, poor seeing, no seeing (due to clouds)... If the conditoin were any worse, we will not be taking data. The data reduction should be challenging. 04:40Z Closed due to high wind. Run 4914 Imager flat inside the dark enclosure., checkBias results: im> checkBias 4912 25 . {61 WARN: } {61 FAIL: leftRNComp } Open /skycat/imager/53301/4912-25-u-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53301/4912-25-g-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53301/4912-25-r-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53301/4912-25-i-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53301/4912-25-z-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53301/4912-25-o-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53301/4912-25-l-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53301/4912-25-t-bias.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53301/4912-25-s-bias.gif/gif {photo h51} {astro h28} checkFlat results: im> checkFlat 4914 25 . {42 WARN: leftGain } {42 FAIL: } Open /skycat/imager/53301/4914-25-u-flat.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53301/4914-25-g-flat.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53301/4914-25-r-flat.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53301/4914-25-i-flat.gif/gif Open /skycat/imager/53301/4914-25-z-flat.gif/gif Bias vector for g1 seems to fluctuate between the two bias levels seen in the bias vector from last dark run. Is this odd/even effect? Same thing for r1. For detail, please see the gif image for g1 and r1 above. It turns out there are other chips behaving this way. Connie -- could you check the plots and tell us if all is well? 06:50Z The wind calmed down enough that we decided to open. cart 8 plate 1557. We have lots of thick clouds around us. So we fk5 first. We found fk5 easily with offsets from imaging. 30s guider exposure is not finding the guide stars. The clouds are not going to allow us to do science..... 07:40Z The clouds cleared enough to start science exposure. Clouds improved during the second exposure and moon is setting. 08:30Z We reopened DIMM. It reports highly variable seeing (1-3"), confirming what we see from the guide stars. We finished this plate combined with the previous exposures. 08:58Z cart 1 plate 1865 We had to fk5. The sky is clear, but the seeing is so-so at 1.7". AHHH! b1Wsigma and r1Xsigma is in RED RED RED. BOOOOOOOOOOO. We had to abort the sciene exsposure to re-adjust. :( :( :( 09:28Z ODH goes off again. It went from slow beeep beep to beepbeepbeepbeep beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. 09:31Z The ODH sensor stopped on its own... We will call Carlos (on-call Engineer) if it goess off again. It is NOT caused by the dewars. 09:32Z ODH sensor goes off again for few seconds. After it stopped, Atsuko went to see if anything was wrong (a moth stuck on a sensor?) while Steph works on getting the spectro back in collimation. We found out that now sp2 is out of spec. :( We adjusted sp2 when we adjusted sp1 few minutes ago, but we found out that we accidentally did mechPiston twice (-6359) for sp2 which we noted at the time and we compensated by going the other direction once (+6359). But this did not help. After this, Every time we move to get Xmin/Xmax in spec, Wmin/Wmax goes out! As discussed in the last ops phonecon, all is not well with sp2 actuators. PR filed. 10:22Z We noted that DIMM lost Polaris again. Something is not right.... Drives?? 11:13Z FINALLY sp2 is in spec -- the numbers are in yellow which is good enough. We are getting sub"seeing for some of the guide fibers. 11:37Z Call from Hercules. We tell him of the sp2 problem and ODH sensor. After three exposures, we did not quite finish this plate. We did a postCalib for this plate because we could. Atsuko will ask the pluggers to leave this plate plugged. 12:15Z Closed. DIMM is powered off. endNight is running. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4908 23:01Z 23:11Z 100 O 86.21 88.61 29 ignore Lost 4910 23:49Z 00:08Z 100 O 98.18 102.87 44 ignore Lost 4911 00:45Z 01:52Z 100 O 112.17 129.07 113 ignore 4912 02:51Z 03:06Z 100 O 143.90 147.61 39 bias 4914 05:07Z 05:27Z 100 O -181.93 -177.01 46 calibration ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4913 16 4 123 0.700 0.131 22.400 0.142 -0.00120 211 53 4913 22 4 126 0.600 0.203 22.200 0.636 -0.00084 211 53 4913 39 1 19 -0.600 0.081 -0.400 0.122 0.00245 211 53 4913 74 4 85 0.100 0.111 -0.700 0.140 0.00226 211 53 4913 127 4 19 0.400 0.119 -1.400 0.178 0.00209 211 53 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 28977, plate 1917 ------- 23:05 28977 0.0 bias 23:09 28978 2.2 arc 23:12 28979 2.1 arc 00:07 28980 2.1 arc 00:10 28981 2.1 arc ----- sequence 28982, plate -9999 ------- 00:50 28982 0.0 bias 00:52 28983 0.0 bias ----- sequence 28984, plate 1917 ------- 01:31 28984 10.0 flat 01:33 28985 2.0 arc 01:52 28986 900.1 target 02:15 28987 1200.1 target ----- sequence 28988, plate 1557 ------- 07:35 28988 10.0 flat 07:38 28989 2.0 arc 08:02 28990 1200.1 target 08:25 28991 1200.1 target 08:52 28992 1500.1 target ----- sequence 28993, plate 1865 ------- 09:15 28993 10.0 flat 09:17 28994 2.0 arc 09:29 28995 2.1 arc 09:31 28996 2.1 arc 09:45 28997 10.0 flat 09:47 28998 2.0 arc 10:05 28999 10.0 flat 10:07 29000 2.0 arc 10:26 29001 10.0 flat 10:28 29002 2.0 arc 10:37 29003 10.0 flat 10:39 29004 2.0 arc 10:55 29005 10.0 flat 10:57 29006 2.0 arc 11:05 29007 10.0 flat 11:08 29008 2.0 arc 11:28 29009 900.1 target 11:51 29010 1200.1 target 12:09 29011 900.1 target 12:11 29012 10.0 flat 12:14 29013 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:29Z 4 1917 5.21 0.0009 51.10 -0.0063 184.28 -0.0025 1.000170 06:55Z 8 1557 8.14 0.0042 58.49 -0.0056 186.75 0.0000 1.0 this is left from the imaging. 07:40Z 8 1557 -13.89 0.0020 56.42 -0.0054 168.26 -0.0054 1.000020 09:24Z 1 1865 119.60 0.0022 53.65 -0.0074 -88.99 -0.0065 1.000300 11:17Z 1 1865 133.13 0.0022 73.47 -0.0074 -57.13 -0.0065 1.000250 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL7969-7974, 7984 Stays: JL7976-79,7986, 7981, 7985 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:29Z 4 1917 1.00017 -1678 238 450 5 51.1 2.4 16 256 gdr 1.8 07:40Z 8 1557 1.00002 -198 1148 150 -14 56.4 2.8 17 275 gdr 1.5 09:24Z 1 1865 1.00030 -2961 -1182 100 120 53.6 2.1 10 270 gdr 1.7 11:17Z 1 1865 1.00025 -2468 -818 100 133 73.5 1.7 19 289 gdr 1.0 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:16Z 39 31 20 271 (W) 607 - 22:48Z 42 31 24 264 (W) 624 - 23:19Z 42 29 27 250 (WSW) 502 - 23:49Z 40 25 17 248 (WSW) 444 - 00:22Z 38 25 15 265 (W) 315 - 00:53Z 36 24 13 261 (W) 311 - 01:13Z 36 23 14 268 (W) 282 - 01:43Z 36 22 16 261 (W) 312 - 02:16Z 35 22 21 249 (WSW) 236 - 02:48Z 36 16 19 265 (W) 180 - 03:20Z 37 6 21 268 (W) 116 - 03:52Z 37 14 25 272 (W) 131 - 04:25Z 38 18 31 288 (WNW) 194 - 04:57Z 38 20 31 285 (WNW) 222 - 05:29Z 38 13 24 285 (WNW) 179 - 06:01Z 37 12 18 276 (W) 166 - 06:34Z 37 17 15 276 (W) 179 - 07:05Z 38 12 19 285 (WNW) 165 - 07:38Z 37 12 14 269 (W) 157 - 08:10Z 37 13 20 284 (WNW) 193 - 08:42Z 36 18 21 286 (WNW) 201 - 09:15Z 36 18 15 278 (W) 230 - 09:47Z 35 19 13 275 (W) 195 - 10:20Z 35 19 16 306 (NW) 233 - 10:52Z 34 19 19 301 (WNW) 236 - 11:24Z 34 20 18 297 (WNW) 214 - 11:56Z 34 21 21 317 (NW) 231 - 12:29Z 33 24 19 287 (WNW) 333 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:30Z Open! 04:40Z Closed, fans on. 12:20Z Closed, fans off. As a precaution, I cleaned all the DA tape drives, rebooted the imaging DA crates, then issued an initNight -poolInit -tapeRelabel. During the reboot, I got the following critical (?) errors reported: archiver,id6,poolFullFrame imda archiver,id6,poolFullGang imda although I have no idea what that means. The next goDrift failed reporting problems talking to ad2. I rebooted the astrometrics crate and got further errors: im> initNight -poolInit Error: {id1 {}} {id2 {}} {id3 {}} {id4 {}} {id5 {}} {id6 {}} {ad1 {}} {ad2 {ICC ad2 (crate 3, board 1) is not available Bad ICC}} {ad3 {}} {ad4 {}} although it is possible this we due to me strting too soon after the reboot. I reported the astrometrics crate again. Next, id5-2 reported that it did not have an ANSI 3 label. I ended the drift, removed the tapes and rebooted crate all the crates again. As id5-2 was calling for a cleaning tape again, I did clean it and also replaced the data tape, so observers beware: the imager tape numbers are NOT sequential. Craig also traced the ad2 failure to a problem with an ethernet Thinwire backplane connection in the astrometrics crate, which he duly jiggled. The errors did not recur. ---=== SPECTROGRAPHS' FOCUS POSITIONS ===--- Initial positions: sp1: Coll_motor_A -6244 Coll_motor_B -5271 Coll_motor_C -6935 sp2: Coll_motor_A -12769 Coll_motor_B -7448 Coll_motor_C -7666 im> caget tpm_TM_PMSSAvg tpm_TM_TelairAvg.VALA tpm_TM_PMSSAvg 8.88357 tpm_TM_TelairAvg.VALA 8.795 im> date Fri Oct 22 23:30:24 UTC 2004 TCC> track 121,30 mount /rotan=45 /rotty=mount sp1> loadCart 4 1917 sp1> goSpecFocus IDL> collimate, 28978 COLLIMATE: Mean offset = -0.07 pix COLLIMATE: Camera b1 appears to be IN-FOCUS (|mean| < 0.15 pix) COLLIMATE: Predict blue camera ring movement of 2.5 degrees for spectro-1 COLLIMATE: Mean offset = 0.19 pix COLLIMATE: Camera b2 appears to be OUT-OF-FOCUS (|mean| > 0.15 pix) COLLIMATE: Predict blue camera ring movement of -6.7 degrees for spectro-2 COLLIMATE: Mean offset = -0.00 pix COLLIMATE: Camera r1 appears to be IN-FOCUS (|mean| < 0.15 pix) COLLIMATE: Predict (red) piston movement of 13 steps for spectro-1 COLLIMATE: Mean offset = -0.11 pix COLLIMATE: Camera r2 appears to be IN-FOCUS (|mean| < 0.15 pix) COLLIMATE: Predict (red) piston movement of 1019 steps for spectro-2 sp2> mechPiston 1019 sp1> goSpecFocus IDL> collimate, 28980 COLLIMATE: Mean offset = -0.12 pix COLLIMATE: Camera b1 appears to be IN-FOCUS (|mean| < 0.15 pix) COLLIMATE: Predict blue camera ring movement of 4.2 degrees for spectro-1 COLLIMATE: Mean offset = 0.07 pix COLLIMATE: Camera b2 appears to be IN-FOCUS (|mean| < 0.15 pix) COLLIMATE: Predict blue camera ring movement of -2.7 degrees for spectro-2 COLLIMATE: Mean offset = 0.07 pix COLLIMATE: Camera r1 appears to be IN-FOCUS (|mean| < 0.15 pix) COLLIMATE: Predict (red) piston movement of -616 steps for spectro-1 COLLIMATE: Mean offset = -0.01 pix COLLIMATE: Camera r2 appears to be IN-FOCUS (|mean| < 0.15 pix) COLLIMATE: Predict (red) piston movement of 63 steps for spectro-2 Final positions: sp1: Coll_motor_A -6244 Coll_motor_B -5271 Coll_motor_C -6935 sp2: Fiducial corrections ==================== While goin gdown to 6deg to open, we got: altitude (correction for altitude -617 is too large (2004-10-23 00:33:08Z sdssmcp): 2004-10-23 00:33:28Z ) But we crossed other fiducials after we opened with reasonable error.
