Chicago) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shake and supernova science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- o 7721 frames of SN data taken mainly 2"seeing and lots of moon. o Last shake item, spectro on sky, completed. The pointing is good. o Plate 1865 done (after combining with data from previous exposures. We had to readjust sp1 despite of the afternoon collimation check and adjustment done by Mike. o We could not get any useful data after finishing plate 1865. Too moony. o JB's new TPM display to show the UPS status is up on monx3. o We do not know who the next President of this country will be. o Watered Jurek's plant (7 gallons) as was scheduled. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Spectro collimation adjusted. Details in the Problems section. Checkout went smoothly. There was a windscreen touch during checkout: altitude (Windscreen touched in altitude: UP (2004-11-02 22:49:25Z sdssmcp): 2004-11-02 22:49:30Z) Night: ------ 00:15Z Opened with imager Run 4926 Bias on the telescope 01:15Z ODH sensor goes off AGAIN. We got the portable sensor and found the portable sensor reporting about 20.8. 01:21Z Run 4927 82N Dan had a problem starting the focus loop because the file permission for focus-53312.par was set wrong. He corrected it and was able to start the focusLoop. Frame 24 in-focus. SN science from here. We had problem running skippy. It would not run on many files because the files were not of right size. Dan finally found skippy ran successfully on frame 28. Why are we getting short gang frames???? 01:49Z Teamster seemed to have died 10min or so ago. Restarted a new one. With the new teamster, we seem to be getting more correct size gang files. Maybe the old teamster was sick could not transfer full size gang files or something?? We tried to run skyGang while Dan was figuring out why skippy was failing. We got error in skyGang complaining about files not existing (The error message is in the problem section). It looked like skyGang was looking for files in /data/astro/MJD. Since the gang files get written to /data/astro/MJD/RUN/, the error message means skyGang is lookig at the wrong place for files. Since the directory structure has not changed forever (or at least hte past 5 years), we wonder why skyGang is trying to look for data at the wrong place. also, the gang file it looked for was 10 frames larger than the frame number I gave in command line. Was this always a feature of skyGang? It has been a while since I ran skyGang, I cannot remember if this was a feature or not. 02:21Z Seeing is around 2.0" and SoKent has not called any of the data survey quality. JB created a TPM display for the imager ups we can run as observer. We started it on monx3. Since TPM watcher button is usually in red, it is probably better to have this display up on monx3 until the TPM errors are reduced to reasonable number. 04:13Z Moonrise. Frame 290 Longitude 165.3 Seeing is GOOD from here. Frame 309 Longitude 168.2 Seeing is BAD from here again. Frame 389 Longitude 180.1 Seeing is ACCEPTBABLE from here. Frame 470 Longitude 192.3 Seeing is BAD again. Frame 671 Longitude 222.3 Seeing is GOOD from here again! Frame 700 Longitude 226.7 SEeing is still GOOD. The seeing to have blown up around frame 725. But we cannot give you SoKent estimates since it only calculates up to 700 frames. Frame 756 Lambda=-125. Frame 771 end of the run. 09:00Z We instChange to spectro with cart 1 plate 1865. 09:14Z stars on gotoField! 09:42Z science aborted because preCalib showed that r1's WSIGMA is in red. :( Dan estimated the amount to move the motors without running collimate and made perfect adjustments(mechPiston -3000 on sp1). We logged the time between the bad preclib and the good preCalib as "Spectrograph problem". One science exposure finished this plate (combined with previous exposures). We note that r2 got sky in red, but since r1 is the one that needed this exposure to finish the plate which had good exposure. Cart 4 Plate 1920 10:23Z stars on gotoField. Few misbehavior observed. saoDisplay first showed the last image of the guide stars from the last plate instead of the most recent image of the field of the current plate. Taking another gcam image showed the guide stars for this plate. But when another image was taken, it was not updated on the moniotor. So Dan restarted the monitor and all was well. First science frame shows the moon is too bright for science. The moon number for this plate is 2.5Zappa. The other plate available at this time of the night also has 2.5Zappa. We try another science exposure... and it was not any better. We declared the science exposures bad. We have about 30min before twilight. So we give up. There is nothing else we can do. 11:30Z We give up and close. endNight is still running.
