APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday November 12, 2004 (MJD 53322) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Jurek Krzesinski Atsuko Nitta Mike Harvanek (swing) Craig Loomis on the phone. Visitor: Douglas Tucker (FNAL) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Supernova science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Bad weather - clouds, humidity, precip. We never opened. On-telescope imager bias and flat obtained and checkBias, biasGen/biasCheck and checkFlat were run. No errors reported by checkBias; 1 error reported by checkFlat: {42 WARN: leftGain } {42 FAIL: } When displaying idMosaicAstro-004953-0033.fit, o2, l1, l4 and s5? looked odd. They appear to have horizontal lines in them. Details are in the main log. If anyone cares, the data are in phoenix:/data/photo/optics/53322. Wrong pixel numbers while testing imager with bias (see the problem section). Mamoru QE calibration done in u4. PROBLEMS: ========= u5 measurements stopped in the middle on a serious ptvme problem. See the log and the problem section for Craig's explanation about oddity of the problem. Request for rearanging signal wire at MSP head: ----------------------------------------------- Jon, could you check on the signal wire which goes to Mamoru's calibrator head please, and rearange it's positon (green wire) so it won't touch the imager cover? We are likely to break it if it will stay this way. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Spectro collimation did NOT need adjustment. Numbers are in the Problems section. Nothing else to report. Night: ------ Since the weather was bad (clouds, humidity, precip), Mike took an on-telescope imager bias and flat at the beginning of the night and then ran checkBias, checkFlat, etc. Although this is usually done at shakeup, it was decided to do it tonight instead since the weather prevented opening. This way, if the weather is good during shakeup, that time can be spent on sky rather than doing these calibrations. The results are given below: checkBias results: im> checkBias 4953 33 . We finished u4 without any problems, then in the middle of u5 measuremnets we've got PTVME problem, the camera stopped at: 2004-11-13 07:46:44Z: opening camera doors, iop session in which we were running calibrations was kicked out. We tried to reboot crates several times, tried to restart servers, even ended up rebooting the host but couldn't recover. Only id1 and id6 was comming back to live. Watcher reported the folowing errors for all ids: Status Down Run 4959 Frame 47 dsc W trcWarn msgQReceive err, TMO assumed, errno=0x3d0004 (2069 interrupt (dsc_W_trcWarn msgQReceive err, TMO assumed, errno=0x3d0004 (2069 interrupt : 2004-11-13 07:47:59Z ) no response (not responding: 2004-11-13 08:10:37Z) dead (Frame=47 Row=0: 2004-11-13 07:50:22Z) 09:00Z We called Craig. After he had woken up, he spend a lot of time investigating the problem, while we were rebooting crates time to time. 11:32Z 2.5 hours later he solved the problem. We tested imager with bias. All is fine now - THANKS Craig!!! ... and sorry to weak you up at 2 am. After "something happened" this evening, most of the 167s failed to boot. id1 and id6 reliably booted, all the rest reliably did not. The first error was that the .sym file was not loaded: Loading symbol table from sdsshost:/p/astrobase/vxworks/config/mv167/vxWorks.sym ...Error opening sdsshost:/p/astrobase/vxworks/config/mv167/vxWorks.sym: status = 0x3d Note that a) the vxWorks image proper did load and that b) the ftp server on 'host never got _any_ part of the request to send vxWorks.sym. One interesting note is that all the CPUs which did not boot had ROM (?) version 5.0.2b-68040. The two CPUs which did boot (id1 & id6) are version 5.1. This was all fairly strange, so we tried powercycling the crate, to no effect. The workaround was to switch to booting with rsh instead of ftp. - craig
