APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday February 8, 2005 (MJD 53410) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Afternoon Swing: Atsuko Nitta Craig Loomis (doing the hard work while Atsuko does the easy stuff) Jon Brinkmann (getting his hands dirty in the back of the DA crates) Night: Pete Newman ---- his last night on SDSS! Scot Kleinman Visitor: Hercules ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- More silence: humidity and /or clouds kept us closed. Much work on but no solution to the imager DA problem. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon ============ 24/7 man worked very very hard. Craig was working furiously on the DA when I came in. Rebooting host, astro crate, and ptvmeReset in various orders did not seem to help. Craig decided to swap the ptvme board. Craig then called Connie for help. There were many of us in the control room at one point or another (Scot, Pete, Dan, JB, Hercules and me), but Craig was the one who worked hard. The greatest contribution I did was to make Craig a strong cup of coffee to keep him going. The first set of postCalib this afternoon is bad. There were lights in the enclosure. The second arc is bad. Not enough lines found in r2 (30 lines found. 31 lines would have made it in yellow). But the second flat is good. I took another arc, and this was good. I did the physical checkout of the telescope before taking the second postCalib. Maybe that warmed up the lamps too much (?) to make it hard for r2 to find all the lines?? Craig continues to work as I end my swing shift. We are ready to do spectro when the weather allows us to open. But not ready for imaging as I type this. Night ===== Craig with help and/or hinderance from the rest of us worked hard and late trying to determine what is failing inthe DA, but without success. He and Jon _have_ found a way to consistently make the astro DA fail, but don't yet understand why. They are writing up what they've found so far (posted to sdss-obs), with the intention of involving the DA experts from FNAL tomorrow. So, we are definitely off the sky for imaging until further notice, but we are ok for specotrscopy. However, the weather continues to work against us, with varying limits of humdity or cloud cover making opening not worthwhile. We eventually gave up at 11:35Z, about 40 min before twilight. endNight ran onto the cloudy night tapes. Goodbye! ======== To end on a personal note, this is the last night log you'll see from me (Pete), as I'm off to pastures new in England. I must say I've had a wonderful time working with y'all for the last four years, and I wish everyone success for the future! It's been real. ;-) ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- No successful doghouse bias taken due to DA problems. ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): Y QA Procedures Done (y/n): N UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 30816, plate -9999 ------- 22:51 30816 0.0 bias ----- sequence 30817, plate 2061 ------- 23:02 30817 10.0 flat 23:04 30818 2.0 arc 23:32 30819 10.0 flat 23:36 30820 2.0 arc ----- sequence 30821, plate -9999 ------- 23:50 30821 0.0 bias ----- sequence 30822, plate 2061 ------- 23:58 30822 2.0 arc ----- sequence 30823, plate -9999 ------- 00:14 30823 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- No tapes to ship or store. ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:33Z 32 26 8 258 (WSW) -9999 - Variable cloud 23:05Z 31 25 9 276 (W) -9999 - " 23:35Z 30 23 5 291 (WNW) -9999 - " 00:06Z 29 24 11 289 (WNW) -9999 - " 00:38Z 29 22 9 289 (WNW) -9999 - " 01:18Z 28 22 8 277 (W) -9999 - " 01:50Z 28 23 9 269 (W) -9999 - " 02:23Z 28 23 6 266 (W) -9999 - " 02:55Z 28 24 6 265 (W) -9999 - " 03:27Z 28 24 5 267 (W) -9999 - " 03:59Z 29 23 9 286 (WNW) -9999 - " 04:32Z 29 21 9 294 (WNW) -9999 - " 05:04Z 29 21 7 276 (W) -9999 - " 05:36Z 29 22 7 283 (WNW) -9999 - " 06:24Z 29 21 6 253 (WSW) -9999 - " 06:57Z 29 23 7 230 (SW) -9999 - " 07:29Z 29 23 8 242 (WSW) -9999 - " 08:01Z 29 16 5 267 (W) -9999 - " 08:33Z 29 18 8 268 (W) -9999 - " 09:06Z 28 20 7 272 (W) -9999 - " 09:38Z 28 19 8 274 (W) -9999 - " 10:10Z 28 20 9 315 (NW) -9999 - " 10:42Z 28 20 6 335 (NNW) -9999 - " 11:12Z 28 20 11 305 (NW) -9999 - " 11:44Z 30 16 4 294 (WNW) -9999 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Enclosure not opened.
