APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday March 10, 2005 (MJD 53440) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Howard Brewington Night: Scot Kleinman Jurek Krzesinski Sleuth: Craig Hercule Loomis ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- A clear sky, but dreadful seeing limited us to one plate done and a few random exposures. We discovered a new way for XBORE and YBORE to bite us (hard!). See PR 6389. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing: ========== id3-1 and 1d3-2 became unhappy while doing an imager bias; see Problems Section for Watcher messages. I cleaned both drives; however, id3-2 wanted to be cleaned a second time. So, I replaced the tape in id3-2 as well. Next, I rebooted photo-01, did another initNight -tapeRelabel, and a goDrift -bias. Afterwards, the DA was happy. The spectro focus was checked but not adjusted; see Problems Section for focus numbers. Night: ========== Looks like another good night, so we start with imaging again. :> 02:13Z We started run 5188 (19 S) before twilight to get set up. Focus is easily achieved, but seeing was marginal, but not without hope. Skippy reported a -9" nuErr, so we stop the drift, make the correction, and start our bias, we can test the correction after the bias on the science drift. 02:14Z Run 5189 - on telescope good bias. We made the required skippy correction during this bias, but unfortunately ran out of time, and had to back up a couple degrees to make the starting lambda in time. Oh well, nice idea. 02:32Z Run 5190 - telescope backed up to lambda=-68 (science to start at -64). 02:37Z lambda=-66.5 at frame 17. Skippy never returned valid results, so we tried skyGang. It printed only cyan stars and no red (observed) stars- not terribly useful. We decided to clear all offsets and re-slew the telescope to lambda=-72. (Within this same run.) Seeing was marginal to bad during all this time. Frame 56 lambda~-71, slew over. 03:08Z skyGang was still showing NO observed stars, even when asked to use no faint magnitude cutoff. We decided to try one last desperate measure: stop and start a new run. 03:10Z - reslewing to -67 lambda. 03:12Z run 5191 starts. Meanwhile, we tried Schlegel skippy only to find the 'host IDL license was not set up properly. So, Craig fixed that. Evilskippy then also didn't work- returning errors like: ... OFFSET_FROM_PAIRS: WARNING: maxval LE 0! We did a ptvmeReset and re-started servers and IOPs. 03:19Z Success- skippy and evilSkippy both worked on run 5191 - something must be wrong in the run parameter files for 5190. Actually, astrom skippy worked and showed we are in spec, evilSkippy found matches, but again reported: ... ASTROM_ENGINE: Number of catalog matches = 2 ASTROM_ENGINE: WARNING: XY shift FAILED in astrom_tweak SKIPPY: Working on file idGang-005191-c6-0016.fit ASTROM_ENGINE: XYSHIFT: 1308.27 -118.823 pix ASTROM_TWEAK: Too few matches; returning original GSA ASTROM_TWEAK: Too few matches; returning original GSA ASTROM_ENGINE: Number of catalog matches = 1 ASTROM_ENGINE: WARNING: XY shift FAILED in astrom_tweak ASTROM_ENGINE: XY shift FAILED SKIPPY: No good solutions in both r-band and g-band! Aha, but why!? Meanwhile, we noted we have TCC error messages in the watcher: Text="Could not queue a write to user:message output dies": (2005-03-11 02:58:38Z) Facil="SYSTEM":VMSMsg:"DEVOFFLINE" (2005-03-11 02:58:38Z) Facil="SYSTEM":VMSMsg:"HANGUP" (2005-03-11 02:58:38Z) Text="move rejected:telescope is slewing": (2005-03-11 02:58:38Z) Text="Write to user failed:output terminates to user13": (2005-03-11 02:58:38Z) Modu="prt ReadMatch" (2005-03-11 02:58:38Z) Modu="prt Init Forth" (2005-03-11 02:58:38Z) We believe user13 was Jurek's IOP TCC connection. 03:34Z: seeing never improved (wind out of the east), so we stopped the run and switched to spectroscopy. 03:56Z cart 1 plate 1959 mounted, but no GSOTGTF. offsets cleared, nada. fk5 star easily found (12"W). 04:04Z Craig sleuthed around and found the problem - see PR 6389 which details a particularly nasty failure mode of calcStripeParams, but we don't know what triggered it. 05:24Z Seeing is rapidly deteriorating, so we had to sit for a while, after a midCalib because we weren't getting any signal. Finished eventually in 4 good exposures. We should have time tracked this to other weather, but forgot. 06:30Z cart 4, plate 1997. GSOTGTF. 10:46Z this plate expired in awful seeing - on to (not done) 10:57Z cart 8 plate 1706. GSOTGTF. Not done in 3 exposures. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5185 23:25Z 23:32Z 100 O -130.87 -129.04 26 ignore 5186 23:42Z 23:56Z 100 O -126.56 -122.95 38 ignore 5187 00:55Z 01:32Z 100 O -108.22 -98.83 77 ignore 5188 01:56Z 02:13Z 19 S -71.23 -68.99 42 ignore 5189 02:14Z 02:30Z 100 O -88.36 -84.48 40 bias 5190 02:32Z 03:09Z 19 S -10184.00 -69.37 76 ignore 5191 03:11Z 03:35Z 19 S -66.82 -60.89 53 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5188 20 1 35 0.200 0.171 -9.300 0.183 0.00490 139 59 5188 26 1 59 -0.600 0.162 -9.700 0.166 0.00461 142 59 5191 12 1 46 -2.900 0.178 -5.400 0.143 0.00985 166 65 5191 34 4 98 -1.700 0.261 -5.200 0.200 0.01161 166 67 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5191 35 1 67 14 41 -2.241 0.476 -2.100 0.554 0.00706 5191 35 1 67 14 31 -1.952 0.575 -1.382 0.343 0.00465 5191 35 1 67 14 43 -1.178 0.320 -2.437 0.326 0.00819 5191 35 1 67 14 37 -0.596 0.334 -2.758 0.281 0.00927 5191 35 1 67 14 38 -0.238 0.192 -2.941 0.271 0.00989 ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 31297, plate -9999 ------- 23:09 31297 0.0 bias 23:14 31298 0.0 bias ----- sequence 31299, plate 1651 ------- 23:36 31299 10.0 flat 23:39 31300 2.0 arc 23:42 31301 2.1 arc 23:44 31302 2.1 arc 23:50 31303 0.0 bias ----- sequence 31304, plate -9999 ------- 00:33 31304 0.0 bias ----- sequence 31305, plate -9999 ------- 01:48 31305 0.0 bias ----- sequence 31306, plate 1959 ------- 04:04 31306 10.0 flat 04:06 31307 2.0 arc 04:25 31308 900.1 target 04:43 31309 900.1 target 05:07 31310 1234.1 target -
