APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday April 21, 2005 (MJD 53482) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- John Barentine (swing/early night) Steph Snedden (night) Julian Van Eyken (ET, UF) Visitors: Atsuko Nitta Scot Kleinman French Leger ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- ET Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Another night of ET science on all five ET plates. Partly cloudy for much of the night, so some signal was lost, but we should have useable data for all plates. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------- No problems to report. Checked spectro focus which did not require adjustment (see Problems section). Night ----- Open at 01:40Z Note that the average of the four air temperature sensors on the fork was off, reading about -1C when the air temp was really closer to 9C. The sensors need to be checked. 02:22Z Cart 5 Plate 8012. No guide stars on gotoField with last night's sticky offsets still in place. Cleared last night's sticky offsets and tried again without luck. fk5InFiber number 10 landed the fk5 star near the edge of the fiber. Additional manual offsets of A=+5, D=+3 brought it near enough to the center for the guider to take over. 04:10Z John took off to get some much needed rest. Steph took over. Approx. 2.5 hours of exposures. 05:33Z Cart 6, plate 8011. No guide stars on gotoField. Found an FK5 with offsets of A=+12, D=-7. 06:45Z Waves of clouds moved through the field. They surely affected the signal. Acquired signal for approx. 2 hours. Dust went up to around 2000 particles/0.1 cu.ft. and stayed around there. 07:58Z Cart 8, plate 8013. No guide stars, but found them after using offsets from last night's log (A=-10, D=+20). 90 min. total exposure. 09:45Z Cart 4, plate 8014. No guide stars, then we noticed the "bad reply" error message in the TCC. gcam init didn't work, so we rebooted the guider Mac, set inst=spectro and then successfully found an FK5 glint with an offset of A=-15, D=-15. Did one 45 minute exposure. 10:49Z Cart 9, plate 8015.Last night's offsets of A=-16, D=-7 brought an FK5 to the edge of the fiber. Exposed for 35 minutes followed by 5 minute exposures until twilight forced us to close. We continued to have variably cloudy conditions. I did exposures ranging from 30 to 90 seconds under changing conditions on the SDSS fibers while the 35 minute ET exposure was ongoing. 12:22Z Closed the enclosure. endNight -doTpm ran on the cloudy night tapes. Transferred tonight's fits files from sdsshost to Tycho /export/images/53482, where Julian can scp them tomorrow to the machine of his choice. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 32179, plate -9999 ------- 00:16 32179 0.0 bias ----- sequence 32180, plate 8015 ------- 00:28 32180 10.0 flat 00:30 32181 2.0 arc 00:42 32182 0.0 arc 00:44 32183 0.0 arc 11:09 32184 0.0 target 11:13 32185 0.0 target 11:17 32186 0.0 target 11:22 32187 0.0 target 11:26 32188 0.0 target 11:29 32189 0.0 target 11:33 32190 0.0 target 11:38 32191 0.0 target 11:42 32192 0.0 target 11:47 32193 0.0 target 11:51 32194 0.0 target 11:57 32195 10.0 flat 12:00 32196 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:49Z 5 8012 -67.65 0.0016 77.82 0.0016 118.66 0.0000 1.000150 04:35Z 5 8012 -91.82 0.0016 55.65 0.0016 108.53 0.0000 1.000210 05:42Z 6 8011 216.01 0.0038 57.73 0.0054 59.85 0.0000 1.000190 07:59Z 8 8013 -6.33 -0.0019 56.51 0.0044 174.56 -0.0081 1.000110 10:05Z 4 8014 183.61 0.0073 55.34 0.0058 7.74 0.0010 1.000070 11:12Z 9 8015 135.34 0.0033 71.80 0.0060 -56.09 0.0000 1.000270 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 00:20Z 9 0 1.00030 -2961 -1656 225 121 30.2 11.2 6 320 02:47Z 5 8012 1.00015 -1481 94 200 -67 78.2 8.8 8 235 -- 1.1 04:35Z 5 8012 1.00021 -2073 -353 200 -92 55.7 8.8 9 185 - 1.3 05:42Z 6 8011 1.00019 -1875 -145 250 216 57.7 8.7 9 211 - 1.3 07:59Z 8 8013 1.00011 -1085 412 150 -6 56.5 8.9 10 238 - 1.1 10:05Z 4 8014 1.00007 -691 693 100 184 55.3 8.8 9 283 - 1.3 11:12Z 9 8015 1.00027 -2665 -1029 50 135 71.8 6.8 9 328 - 1.4 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 00:02Z 52 11 5 266 (W) 1565 - 00:34Z 50 8 7 337 (NNW) 1478 - 01:07Z 49 8 5 270 (W) 1472 - 01:39Z 47 5 3 266 (W) 1501 - 02:11Z 48 5 4 263 (W) 1607 - 02:43Z 48 5 6 233 (SW) 1683 - 03:15Z 48 6 8 225 (SW) 1736 - 03:46Z 48 7 8 231 (SW) 1838 - 04:16Z 48 6 9 221 (SW) 1900 - 04:47Z 48 6 5 185 (S) 1755 - 05:20Z 48 5 10 185 (S) 2002 - 05:51Z 47 4 10 210 (SSW) 2002 - 06:24Z 47 4 7 229 (SW) 1970 - 06:56Z 48 2 7 232 (SW) 1964 - 07:29Z 46 2 10 211 (SSW) 1989 - 08:02Z 48 3 12 246 (WSW) 1987 - 08:34Z 48 4 10 266 (W) 1908 - 09:06Z 46 1 14 263 (W) 1823 - 09:37Z 48 2 7 265 (W) 1821 - 10:09Z 48 3 12 296 (WNW) 1614 - 10:41Z 46 2 10 319 (NW) 1570 - 11:12Z 44 4 9 328 (NNW) 1617 - 11:43Z 47 3 5 322 (NW) 1518 - 12:16Z 48 4 6 348 (NNW) 1581 - 12:48Z 48 4 5 357 (NNW) 1573 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:30Z Fans on, louvers open 02:45Z (approx) Fans & blower off 12:22Z Closed enclosure.
