APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday April 22, 2005 (MJD 53483) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek (swing) Atsuko Nitta (allnight) Julian Van Eyken (ET, UF) Visitors: Scot Kleinman Jurek Krzesinski Jian Ge (ET, UF) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- ET Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- o Cloudy. No data. o There is oil leaking from the az drive motor above the amplifier rack. Could someone please check this? o The lower enclosure ODH alarm went off times tonight. Given the fact that we have Julian in the lower enclosure when we observe, it will be nice to have these sensors to be robust. o Finally the night/day when there is only Atsuko to change the dewar has arrived. But not to worry - Wendell will be here to save the day/night/Atsuko/instruments (in random order). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon ============= We are VERY sorry that Robert's bid to the Holiness failed. Perhaps he can wait until there is a King CharlesII in UK. You might then have a chance to win a popular vote to replace him and become King Robert. That will make Sir Robert the head of the Church of England. There is oil leaking from the az drive motor above the amplifier rack. Could someone please check this? A fiducial needed to be forced on the altitude axis because of "too large to correct" errors on all the fiducials. During checkout, the wind baffle temperature was reading 133 C! We were going to toast some marshmellows but the reading was false. The spectro collimation was checked but not adjusted. Jon's new spec mech code is reporting sp1 temps of 10-12 and sp2 temps of 9-10 which are much warmer than the current outside air temp of 6. The weather is not good (cloudy) and may keep us closed all night. Since the plate requiring good spectro collimation is observed at the very end of the night, we will wait and check the collimation again later in the night. Night: ====== Clouds delayed opening. The lower ODH alarm went off around 03:00Z. Both the doors and louvers were open at the time and all fans were on. Julian left immediately. The alarm stopped after a few seconds. zzz <--- Mike falls asleep and Atsuko takes over the log. Took another goSpecFocus images and ran collimate. The results showed that the spectrographs has indeed gotten cooler (sp1 around 7C and sp2 around 5C) and asked for smaller move than last time, as expected. We did not change the motor positions. The temperature might fall slightly more but hopefully not drastically more. Using the cloudy time, I took some flats and darks with different exposure time to make sure the specMech code writes correct header info and the shutter is indeed behaving as commanded. The three flats showed: frame# exp# counts ------ ---- ------------------------------ 32205 10s ~12000-14000 cnts 32206 5s ~6800-7700 cnts 32207 2s ~4000-4800 cnts .. Shouldn't this be lower??? 05:30Z ODH alarm on the lower enclosure went on again for few seconds. Julian was not in the enclosure. So he did not have to suffer from the lack of O2 or from louds beeping noise. The three darks showed the following exposure time and the dark time. The exp# is the length of the dark exposure we specified in the command line. header frame# exp# exp# dark time exp# ------- ----- ----- -------------- 32208 60s 2s 60s 32209 120s 2s 120s 32210 200s 2s 200s 32211 300s 2s 300s Going back to three monthly checkout logs, one instance the header said it was 0s exosure time and twice it said 2s exposure time. We think the exposure time should be 0s if this is the shutter open time. Is this the way it is suppose to be? Are we commonly off by 2s on shutter open time? 06:06Z ODH alarm goes off AGAIN. This time for maybe couple minutes? Mike and I went to the lower enclosure, AFTER the ODH alarm shut off, with handheld ODH sensor. The lower ODH sensor said 20.5 while the handheld one said 20.5. So I suppose the lower one is working somewhat correctly. BTW, one of the handheld OHD sensor alarm went off saying the O level was at 12.5 or so when powered on. Perhaps it needs to be recalibrated? 07:57Z ODH alarm goes off. This time, it lasted for close to 10min. 11:00Z Gave up and closed and shut down the fans. endNight finished w/o any problem. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 32198, plate 8015 ------- 01:27 32198 10.0 flat 01:29 32199 2.0 arc 01:36 32200 0.0 arc 01:39 32201 0.0 arc 02:12 32202 0.0 bias 04:30 32203 0.0 arc 04:32 32204 0.0 arc 04:49 32205 10.0 flat 04:52 32206 5.0 flat 04:55 32207 2.0 flat 05:00 32208 2.0 dark 05:13 32209 2.0 dark 05:19 32210 2.0 dark 05:32 32211 2.0 dark ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 01:14Z 43 24 15 80 (E) 999 - cloudy 01:46Z 42 23 17 74 (ENE) 1069 - cloudy 02:25Z 41 23 17 77 (ENE) 1063 - cloudy 02:57Z 41 23 22 67 (ENE) 1128 - cloudy 03:30Z 40 23 20 74 (ENE) 1173 - cloudy 04:02Z 40 23 12 80 (E) 1233 - cloudy 04:34Z 40 23 22 74 (ENE) 1115 - cloudy 05:05Z 39 23 22 74 (ENE) 1234 - cloudy 05:30Z 39 23 24 70 (ENE) 1147 - 06:03Z 39 22 20 73 (ENE) 1137 - 06:33Z 38 23 21 70 (ENE) 1022 - 07:03Z 37 23 16 76 (ENE) 1106 - 07:34Z 36 23 18 78 (ENE) 1252 - 08:06Z 36 23 18 75 (ENE) 1189 - 08:37Z 36 23 13 82 (E) 1253 - 09:09Z 37 22 10 85 (E) 1372 - 09:42Z 36 23 13 109 (ESE) 1287 - 10:14Z 36 23 14 126 (SE) 1330 - 10:47Z 36 23 14 122 (ESE) 1437 - 11:18Z 36 23 17 125 (SE) 1625 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:20Z Fans on, doors cracked. 01:20Z Doors closed for collimation check. 02:00Z Doors cracked again. 11:00Z Fans off, dorrs closed.
