APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday July 14, 2005 (MJD 53566) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Dan Long Steph Snedden Visitor: French Leger ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science and a short shake. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Better weather than we expected allowed us to finish three Legacy plates and two SEGUE bright plates. Standard shakeup items done. sdssProcedures v2_03 installed and checked. Sirrobert the laptop, really, really, really needs to be replaced. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Tonight is the last night of the run, since it was decided to give French the telescope one day earlier than planned. Our highest priority was to finish plate 2202 so we don't lose the data already collected. After that, we planned to fit in the standard shake items around science and weather conditions. Spectro focus looked okay during the afternoon, so no adjustments were made. The spectrograph 1 autofill nozzle bracket felt a bit loose. French knows about it and it's on the shutdown plans. No PR filed. Sirrobert was unresponsive when we went to open the enclosure. We rebooted it. Mostly clear to partly cloudy at sunset. We opened for spectroscopy. 02:40Z Cartridge 6, plate 2202 - Legacy plate --------------------------------------------- GSOGTF. This plate already had signal, so we hoped to finish it before the clouds sweep down from the north. We were able to do so and the plate was finished with a total exposure time of 2400s. Sky values in b1 and b2 were elevated because of Moon. They were yellow in SoS. It remained much clearer than we could have hoped for, so on to... 04:30Z Cartridge 7, plate 1854 - Legacy plate --------------------------------------------- 04:33Z Sirrobert crashed again. Rebooted. GSOGTF. The plate was finished in three exposures with a total exposure time of 3600 s. Again, SoS reprted yellow sky values for b1 and b2. apoplotsky agreed that Moonlight was affecting the sky. 05:48Z Cartridge 8, plate 1853 - Legacy plate --------------------------------------------- GSOGTF Finished the plate in three exposures totaling 3600 s. The Moon set during this time and all sky values are in the black. 07:06Z Cartridge 4, plate 2249 - SEGUE bright --------------------------------------------- Needed an FK5 to find the field. Finished the plate in three exposures totaling 3300 s. 08:30Z Cartridge 1, plate 2250 - SEGUE bright --------------------------------------------- GSOGTF The focus had been holding at -120 all night until this plate. We needed a focus of -180. There were no sudden changes in temperature, so we don't know why the focus suddenly changed. The only other oddity was that XMIN had drifted more negative on the last plate and this plate. We spent a fair bit of time on this plate because clouds started rolling in. Finished this plate in four exposures totaling 4300 s. apo_plotbias results: Filename 02% 05% 10% 50% 90% 95% 98% ------------------- ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ sdR-b1-00033384.fit -5.9 -4.6 -3.5 2.2 7.7 8.9 11.1 sdR-b1-00033384.fit -5.9 -4.6 -3.5 2.2 7.7 8.9 11.1 sdR-b2-00033384.fit -8.9 -6.9 -5.0 1.1 7.7 9.5 11.6 sdR-b2-00033384.fit -8.9 -6.9 -5.0 1.1 7.7 9.5 11.6 sdR-r1-00033384.fit -7.6 -5.3 -3.8 1.2 7.2 8.5 10.8 sdR-r1-00033384.fit -7.6 -5.3 -3.8 1.2 7.2 8.5 10.8 sdR-r2-00033384.fit -8.1 -6.0 -4.7 0.3 6.3 8.3 9.8 sdR-r2-00033384.fit -8.1 -6.0 -4.7 0.3 6.3 8.3 9.8 endNight -doSpectro -doTpm finished. Shakeup items: -------------- sdssProcedures v2_03 was installed and the changes in the changeLog checked. They were there. Imager bias and flats taken. The frames are stored on sdsshost in data/photo/optics/53566_bias and 53566_flat. Dan will analyze them tomorrow. DIMM and its camera were shut down. It had been left on, with the camera cold. The DIMM was not pointing at Polaris, but the cables were not wrapped, and the drive motors were fine. The DIMM computer keyboard wasn't working, but it was just a loose connection. After that was fixed, the camera was warmed up and turned off and the telescope powered down. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5453 00:31Z 00:35Z 100 O 9.85 11.01 22 ignore 5454 00:50Z 01:01Z 100 O 14.70 17.54 32 ignore 5455 10:40Z 10:51Z 100 O 162.67 165.46 33 bias 5456 10:53Z 11:05Z 100 O 165.87 168.83 33 engineering ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 33383, plate -9999 ------- 00:27 33383 0.0 bias 00:33 33384 0.0 bias ----- sequence 33385, plate 2202 ------- 00:42 33385 10.0 flat 00:44 33386 2.0 arc 03:27 33387 10.0 flat 03:29 33388 2.0 arc 03:56 33389 1200.1 target 04:19 33390 1200.1 target ----- sequence 33391, plate 1854 ------- 04:33 33391 10.0 flat 04:35 33392 2.0 arc 04:58 33393 1200.1 target 05:21 33394 1200.1 target 05:43 33395 1200.1 target ----- sequence 33396, plate 1853 ------- 05:54 33396 10.0 flat 05:57 33397 2.0 arc 06:19 33398 1200.1 target 06:42 33399 1200.1 target 07:05 33400 1200.1 target ----- sequence 33401, plate 2249 ------- 07:22 33401 10.0 flat 07:25 33402 2.0 arc 07:43 33403 900.1 target 08:06 33404 1200.1 target 08:28 33405 1200.1 target ----- sequence 33406, plate 2250 ------- 08:43 33406 10.0 flat 08:45 33407 2.0 arc 09:03 33408 900.1 target 09:23 33409 1000.1 target 09:46 33410 1200.1 target 10:09 33411 1200.1 target 10:12 33412 10.0 flat 10:14 33413 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:13Z 6 2202 29.04 0.0034 69.27 0.0069 204.78 0.0250 1.000130 04:34Z 7 1854 -35.65 0.0056 74.89 0.0068 148.39 0.0054 1.000180 06:00Z 8 1853 282.89 0.0051 58.61 0.0067 118.21 0.0043 1.000150 07:26Z 4 2249 30.21 0.0018 69.61 0.0073 205.81 0.0076 1.000040 08:53Z 1 2250 -26.83 0.0080 71.26 0.0072 156.66 0.0180 1.000050 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8766 Stays: JL8767 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:13Z 6 2202 1.00013 -1284 -50 -120 29 69.3 17.1 5 185 - 1.6 04:34Z 7 1854 1.00018 -1778 -467 -120 -36 74.9 17.4 6 170 - 1.4 06:00Z 8 1853 1.00015 -1480 -191 -120 283 58.6 17.1 4 185 - 1.2 07:26Z 4 2249 1.00004 -395 685 -120 30 69.6 17.4 1 156 - 1.3 08:53Z 1 2250 1.00005 -494 540 -180 -27 71.3 18.3 2 257 - 1.0 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 00:26Z 69 42 5 263 (W) 600 - mostly clear 00:57Z 68 42 2 282 (WNW) 615 - ' 01:27Z 67 43 5 238 (WSW) 590 - ' 01:57Z 66 42 1 261 (W) 600 - ' 02:27Z 63 41 2 232 (SW) 484 - ' 02:57Z 63 40 4 184 (S) 432 - ' 03:28Z 63 39 5 183 (S) 459 - ' 03:58Z 62 39 5 181 (S) 451 - ' 04:28Z 62 39 5 162 (SSE) 431 - ' 05:00Z 63 38 6 146 (SE) 459 - ' 05:30Z 63 38 7 131 (SE) 390 - ' 06:01Z 62 38 4 180 (S) 424 - ' 06:33Z 62 38 5 181 (S) 452 - ' 07:07Z 62 37 1 121 (ESE) 447 - ' 07:37Z 63 37 0 141 (SE) 482 - ' 08:10Z 64 38 3 187 (S) 499 - ' 08:42Z 64 38 1 249 (WSW) 449 - ' 09:14Z 61 37 2 261 (W) 469 - part cloudy 09:47Z 62 36 4 250 (WSW) 454 - ' 10:19Z 62 37 3 178 (S) 466 - mostly cloudy 10:51Z 61 37 5 187 (S) 524 - ' 11:23Z 61 37 4 183 (S) 541 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:05Z Opened doors, started building ventilation. 02:18Z Opened enclosure 10:15Z Closed enclosure.
