APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday August 30, 2005 (MJD 53613) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Jurek Krzesinski night: Mike Harvanek, Dan Long support: Fritz Stauffer phone: Eric Neilsen ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Configure the computers so that the udp packets get read by the crates, then science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We ran off of sdsshost2 (mostly). Still no tcc info in the imaging headers though. The mcp crashed multiple times. Lots of problems with plugmap files. Dan's sop session froze more than a dozen times. Got clock-loss-signal errors from watcher. Finished 1 plate (2252). Got good data on 3 plates (2256, 2260, 1905). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Shake: moving all the software to sdsshost2. Plenty of DA reboots. cleanupMurmur didn't work. Eric fixed the problem. Night: ------ While checking out the telescope, Mike noticed that the PMSS pressure is low (reading 37; should be 39-45) and the site air pressure is low (reading 50; should be 60). Also, the tcc seems to be spitting out a backslash on the command line occasionally down at the laptop. After some tweaking of the computers by Fritz, we were able to get on the sky. Although photometric, we started with spectro to shake the computer switch over to sdsshost2. 0315Z Plate 2256 (cartridge 5): Segue faint. Guide stars on the gotoField. SoS wouldn't reduce anything but biases because it couldn't find the plugmap necessary to reduce the flat. Then the 2nd science exposure never read out and Dan's xsession froze and he had to log out and start over again. By the time he recovered, this plate had expired. We called Fritz about SoS not finding the plugmap and he fixed the problem. Thanks Fritz. We obtained one good 1200 sec exposure for this plate. We still don't know what happened to the 2nd exposure. We switched to cartridge 4 but got the following error when trying to do a loadCartridge: sp1> loadC 4 2258 /home/neilsen/iop/params/cartridgeInfo.par Reading /data/spectro/plugMapM/plPlugMapM-2258-53558-01.par Taking absolute values of GUIDE fiberId Taking absolute values of ALIGNMENT fiberId User supplied cartridge number 4 does not equal plate mapped cartridgeId 9 Since it would not accept that loadC, we switched to cartridge 7. However, the gotoField crashed the mcp: sp1> gotoField -gflat mcpPut: SYSTEM.STATUS Error: syntax error in expression "( & 1) ? 1 : 0" We rebooted the mcp and gotoField worked. 0529Z Plate 2252 (cartridge 7): Segue. FK5 needed to acquire guide stars. The 3rd science exposure never read out. Some of the windows on Dan's computer stopped updating and sop was one of them. That's why the 3rd science exposure never read out. Dan had to restart his xsession again (2nd time tonight). After Dan restarted his windows, there was a problem reading the plugmap files where there had been no problem 30 minutes before. Eric called in about this time and told Dan that it was the same nfs problem that prompted the switch to sdsshost2 today. Apparently the switch to host2 did NOT solve the problem. Finished in 3 exposures (2700 sec total), not counting the one that didn't read out. Lots of whopping fiber, scattered light and sky residual warnings from SoS. Lots of signal too. While taking data for plate 2252, Dan tried an imager bias (even though we were running with the spectro version of astroda) in the hope that he could get a few good frames to check for TCC info in the headers. However, the bias failed almost immediately. So, Dan switched the astroda code to the imager version and rebooted only the imaging crates (not the spectro crate) and took a successful imager bias. However, still no tcc info in the imaging headers. The astroda code was switched back to the spectro version but the imager crates were not rebooted (so they are still running the imager version). When doing the spectro QA, sop could not find the plugmaps for newQAPlate: sp1> newQAPlate 2256 I found no plugMaps for plPlugMapM-2256*par sp1> newQAPlate 2252 I found no plugMaps for plPlugMapM-2252*par We sent Fritz an email about this problem. We switched to cartridge 8 but the mcp crashed again. Rebooting the mcp fixed the problem. Then we had another problem finding the plugmap. At this point Dan realized that none of the cartridges that had been plugged today had plugmaps on devel1, sdssfiles1 or sdsshost2. The plugmaps for these plates could be found only on sdsshost. When Dan copied these plugmap files to sdssfiles1, the plugmap problem went away. This was also the cause of the problem for plate 4 mentioned above. Dan thinks this might have been caused by the switchover to host2. 0750Z Plate 2260 (cartridge 8): Segue faint. Guide stars on the gotoField. We got 3 exposures (3600 sec total) before this plate expired. SoS asked for a postCal and we did one. SoS also warned of a whopping fiber. Although Dan's sop window continues to hang frequently (10th? time tonight), he found that he can awaken it by hitting control C rather than having to kill his window and start over. Dan believes the hanging of the sop window may have something to do with the inundation of the murmur log with all the socket port read failure errors. He caught sop coughing up the following hairball on one such occasion: Got this error on one of the sop freezes requiring a ctrl-C to get it going again. -- MURMUR CLIENT STATUS : "Can't SEND to MURMUR server - IO error" -- Errno message : -- MURMUR CLIENT STATUS : "Can't SEND to MURMUR server - IO error" -- Errno message : mur_send_text failure, error code : 0x800001fa 0930Z Plate 1905 (cartridge 9): Segue faint. Guide stars on the gotoField. Clouds prevented us from getting good data for about half an hour. We got 2 exposures (3000 sec total) before this plate expired. The postCal took us into twilight. SoS warned of 2 whopping fibers. We got clock-loss-signal errors from watcher: AxisStat:alt (clock_loss_signal: 2005-08-31 10:27:25Z) AxisStat:az (clock_loss_signal: 2005-08-31 10:27:25Z) AxisStat:rot (clock_loss_signal: 2005-08-31 10:27:25Z) endNight finished successfully. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5548 05:51Z 05:55Z 100 O 136.41 137.56 22 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): YES UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 33650, plate -9999 ------- 19:44 33650 0.0 bias 19:50 33651 0.0 bias 20:08 33652 0.0 bias 20:18 33653 0.0 bias 20:30 33654 0.0 bias 20:43 33655 0.0 bias 33656 missing - crate rebooted 21:12 33657 0.0 bias 21:20 33658 0.0 bias 21:32 33659 0.0 bias 33660 missing - crate rebooted 21:57 33661 0.0 bias 22:05 33662 0.0 bias 01:19 33663 0.0 bias ----- sequence 33664, plate 2256 ------- 12.5 9.4 13.2 9.8 not done 03:04 33664 0.0 bias 33665 missing - crate rebooted 03:24 33666 10.0 flat 03:26 33667 2.0 arc 03:51 33668 1200.1 target A second science frame never read out. 04:49 33669 0.0 bias ----- sequence 33670, plate -9999 ------- 05:00 33670 0.0 bias ----- sequence 33671, plate 2252 ------- 84.1 28.0 132.1 22.4 DONE 05:03 33671 0.0 bias 05:30 33672 10.0 flat 05:32 33673 2.0 arc 05:50 33674 900.1 target 06:09 33675 900.1 target Another science exposure failed to read out ----- sequence 33676, plate -9999 ------- 06:34 33676 0.0 bias ----- sequence 33677, plate 2252 ------- 07:10 33677 900.1 target ----- sequence 33678, plate 2260 ------- 45.3 27.7 39.6 28.9 not done 07:52 33678 10.0 flat 07:54 33679 2.0 arc 08:19 33680 1200.1 target 08:42 33681 1200.1 target 09:06 33682 1200.1 target 09:08 33683 10.0 flat 09:11 33684 2.0 arc ----- sequence 33685, plate 1905 ------- 17.1 17.5 21.5 19.6 not done 09:33 33685 10.0 flat 09:35 33686 2.0 arc 10:25 33687 1500.1 target 10:53 33688 1500.1 target 10:57 33689 10.0 flat 10:59 33690 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:39Z 5 2256 239.88 0.0001 64.77 0.0001 78.00 -0.1283 1.000030 05:31Z 7 2252 71.97 0.0004 66.43 0.0033 240.13 -0.1137 1.000030 08:44Z 8 2260 -76.85 -0.0018 59.13 0.0026 118.12 -0.1216 1.000010 10:02Z 9 1905 -23.86 -0.0012 54.89 0.0019 159.91 -0.1205 1.000290 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: none Stays: none ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:39Z 5 2256 1.00003 -296 746 -150 240 64.9 16.9 8 207 ---- 1.2" 05:31Z 7 2252 1.00003 -296 743 -150 72 66.3 17.1 15 181 ---- < 1" 08:45Z 8 2260 1.00001 -99 922 -150 -77 59.1 15.6 6 138 ---- 1.4" 10:01Z 9 1905 1.00029 -2864 -1315 -110 -24 54.9 17.6 1 270 ---- 1.3" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 01:01Z 65 32 0 324 (NW) -9999 - 01:32Z 65 31 1 276 (W) -9999 - 01:43Z 64 31 1 250 (WSW) -9999 - 02:16Z 63 35 1 208 (SSW) -9999 - clear 02:48Z 64 33 4 193 (SSW) -9999 - clear 03:18Z 62 33 6 204 (SSW) -9999 - clear 03:51Z 64 30 9 192 (SSW) -9999 - hazy? 04:21Z 63 31 6 176 (S) -9999 - clear 04:53Z 63 37 11 178 (S) -9999 - clear 05:25Z 63 37 14 183 (S) -9999 - a few clouds 05:56Z 62 38 14 182 (S) -9999 - hazy? 06:28Z 62 37 16 200 (SSW) -9999 - a few clouds 07:01Z 62 36 16 198 (SSW) -9999 - a few more clouds 07:33Z 62 37 9 182 (S) -9999 - a few clouds 08:09Z 61 36 6 179 (S) -9999 - a few more clouds 08:41Z 60 36 6 141 (SE) -9999 - clouds 09:13Z 61 35 2 161 (SSE) -9999 - clouds 09:45Z 63 33 0 224 (SW) -9999 - clouds 10:18Z 65 32 0 233 (SW) -9999 - clouds 10:50Z 65 32 0 73 (ENE) -9999 - clouds 11:20Z 65 33 1 45 (NE) -9999 - clouds 15:37Z 65 34 5 45 (NE) -9999 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:15Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 02:20Z Enclosure off. 11:20Z Enclosure on, doors closed, fans and blowers off, louvers closed.
