APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday September 22, 2005 (MJD 53636) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: John Barentine Night: Mike Harvanek Support: Hubert Lampeitl (The Supernova Hunter) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- SN Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- 82 S was imaged in light clouds, good seeing and some moon from lamba +110.5 to +176.7. The scan continued until lambda -163.7 but the data after frame 450 (lambda +176.7) were obtained in heavier clouds and poor seeing and are probably not good. The last half of the night was lost to clouds. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------- During checkout, after track/mount'ing the telescope to 121,90, the altitude brake engaged and would not release. Checked the slip trip display with negative results, and the watcher interlock display showed no stops in. Jon Brinkmann looked at the telscope cartoon from the display on landru and found the imager in an indeterminate state. I checked the cart pin in the doghouse and found it not fully engaged. After pinning it fully, the alt brake released and I was able to move the telescope again. While that was going on, I was taking a doghouse bias (Run 5625) and got a watcher error on id2. Prior to the bias when I did an initNight and "iccExec [photoList] statusDump archState" to check the status of the archiver, the returns were "Ready To Archive" for all nodes. On returning to the control room, I found the monitor for Dewar 2 blank and the state of id2 was "Not initialized". Rebooted the PHOTO 1 crate. Checked the status of all the nodes -- looked good, so I started another bias (Run 5626). Night ----- Partly cloudy at sunset. Some virga off to the distant W but we opened anyway at 01:15Z. Run 5627: On-telescope bias taken in twilight. Run 5628: 82 S, start lambda +110. Focus, seeing, pointing all good from the beginning. Light clouds but no moon at the start. Moonrise occurred around frame 162, lambda +133.5 (03:51Z). The seeing went bad around frame 439, lambda +175 (06:30Z) and heavier clouds followed shortly thereafter. The scan continued until frame 581, lambda -163.7 (08:00Z) when it was stopped due to threatening clouds. Although there might be some patches of usable data after frame 450, lambda +176.7, clouds and poor seeing probably rendered most of this data useless. So, this run is officially judged to be good from the beginning to frame 450 (lambda +110.5 to +176.7) and bad after that. Gang transfer stopped around 03:15Z. A "teamster -force 60" was issued (twice) to solve the problem. The cloud camera died and had to be restarted around 09:30Z. After closing for clouds around 08:00Z we never reopened. There were a few sprinkles around 10:40Z but everything was already closed. endNight completed successfully. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5624 21:20Z 21:38Z 100 O 30.98 35.59 44 ignore 5625 22:06Z 22:52Z 100 O 42.67 54.20 70 ignore 5626 22:57Z 23:07Z 100 O 55.49 57.81 30 ignore 5627 01:55Z 02:15Z 100 O 99.97 104.99 48 bias on telescope, in twilight 5628 02:19Z 08:03Z 82 S 110.39 -163.39 589 science good thru frame 450 ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- See the main log. ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5628 15 4 55 0.000 0.153 -3.400 0.158 0.00396 172 57 5628 27 4 40 -0.300 0.123 -3.700 0.122 0.00382 172 57 5628 47 4 43 -0.300 0.147 -3.700 0.112 0.00375 172 57 5628 72 4 77 -0.000 0.154 -4.200 0.135 0.00376 172 57 5628 147 4 98 1.000 0.143 -3.000 0.106 0.00434 172 57 5628 199 4 71 1.100 0.151 -3.300 0.130 0.00434 172 57 5628 250 4 51 1.500 0.726 -3.400 0.453 0.00436 172 57 5628 302 4 55 1.100 0.135 -3.800 0.130 0.00446 172 57 5628 352 4 53 1.200 0.166 -3.700 0.160 0.00396 172 57 5628 404 4 36 1.200 0.134 -3.600 0.110 0.00465 172 57 5628 455 4 48 1.000 0.169 -4.300 0.115 0.00393 172 57 5628 506 4 36 1.400 0.155 -3.600 0.140 0.00416 172 57 5628 558 4 36 1.200 0.124 -2.800 0.123 0.00402 172 57 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): NO UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 34040, plate -9999 ------- 21:28Z 34040 0.0 bias 21:56Z 34041 0.0 bias ----- sequence 34042, plate 2260 ------- 23:03Z 34042 10.0 flat post-flat 23:05Z 34043 2.0 arc post-arc 23:11Z 34044 2.1 arc focus, hartmann l 23:14Z 34045 2.1 arc focus, hartmann r ----- sequence 34046, plate -9999 ------- 00:53Z 34046 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:33Z imager 8.11 0.0000 56.86 0.0000 96.57 0.0000 1.000000 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:32Z imager 1.00000 0 -467 -362 8 56.9 16.5 2 47 i-23 1.0" 03:17Z imager 1.00000 0 -468 -364 8 56.9 15.5 7 104 i-23 0.9" 04:16Z imager 1.00000 0 -472 -368 8 56.9 16.3 15 155 i-23 0.9" 05:15Z imager 1.00000 0 -469 -365 8 56.9 16.2 15 142 i-23 1.0" 06:22Z imager 1.00000 0 -404 -299 8 56.9 15.2 19 129 i-23 1.4" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:37Z 68 40 10 268 (W) -9999 - 22:07Z 71 42 8 246 (WSW) -9999 - 22:38Z 70 40 9 245 (WSW) -9999 - 01:47Z 63 37 4 297 (WNW) -9999 - light clouds 02:19Z 61 38 3 12 (NNE) -9999 - light clouds 02:52Z 61 38 4 89 (E) -9999 - light clouds 03:25Z 60 38 8 125 (SE) -9999 - light clouds 03:57Z 61 36 12 150 (SSE) -9999 - light clouds 04:29Z 61 35 13 151 (SSE) -9999 - light clouds 05:02Z 61 34 13 157 (SSE) -9999 - light clouds 05:34Z 58 37 15 122 (ESE) -9999 - light clouds 06:06Z 59 37 21 134 (SE) -9999 - light clouds 06:38Z 59 37 17 125 (SE) -9999 - clouds 07:18Z 56 38 14 121 (ESE) -9999 - clouds 07:50Z 56 39 17 122 (ESE) -9999 - clouds 08:23Z 59 35 17 143 (SE) -9999 - clouds 08:55Z 58 35 12 162 (SSE) -9999 - light clouds 09:27Z 58 34 14 162 (SSE) -9999 - light clouds 09:59Z 58 34 13 168 (SSE) -9999 - clouds 10:31Z 57 35 11 167 (SSE) -9999 - clouds 11:03Z 57 35 7 186 (S) -9999 - clouds ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:35Z E garage door open, W garage door cracked, fans and blowers on. 01:15Z Enclosure off. 08:00Z Enclosure on (threatening clouds). 10:45Z Doors closed, fans and blowers off, louvers closed.
