APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday September 26, 2005 (MJD 53640) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: John Barentine Night: Dan Long Kaike Pan Support: Fritz Stauffer Eric Neilsen ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- East winds and clouds portend a supernova imaging night from the start. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Clouds, at times fairly thick, plagued us for about the first half of the night. 82 S was imaged over its entire supernova length of lambda 115 to -125 in run 5646. Rebooting the astrometric crate got the focus loop running on both sets of focus chips again. It took two tries to get counterweight three from the empty to spectro setting at the end of the night. sdssfiles1 crashed just before the end of run 5646. It took some time and phone calls, but endNight eventually finished successfully. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------- No issues during checkout. Spectro focus results in Problems section. Still misbehaves prior to reboot of astro crate 02:10Z Run 5646 82 S lambda 115 to -125 Supernova scan under partly cloudy skies Focus loop now working for both leading and trailing. Unfortunately with the clouds it is struggling to maintain focus. Skippy happy from the start. Seeing is around 2 - 2.5 arcseconds. start of science, lambda 115 frame 45 Not that it mattered much given the seeing and clouds, but the focus loop finally converged ( secondary position between the leading and trailing focus estimates ) around frame 60. 03:45Z Clouds thinning and seeing getting a little better Lambda 131, frame 155 07:20Z Moonrise, frame 520, lambda -174 07:30Z Clouds gone, for the moment anyway, Frame 535, lambda -172 Seeing improving considerably too, now around 1.3 10:45Z end of ramp for supernova region. Letting it continue as there are no other imaging options for the conditions, and too little time to switch to spectroscopy. 11:30Z enclosure on There was a bit of oddness with the counterweights when we took the imager off at the end of the night. When moving from empty to the spectro setting, counterweight three didn't move. The other three all went from 40 to 255. Counterweight 3 stayed put. A second attempt at the command to 255 got number three to move. Not sure what happened here. 12:00Z endNight will not run because there are unarchived files in the queue. archListQ shows what appears to be everything after about frame 891 in the queue (leaving about the last 30 frames to archive). We found there was no route to sdssfiles1 and could not login or even ping it. We then called Fritz and he had us power cycle sdssfiles1. It came back up, but archiving did not resume. Talked to Eric, and he had us temporarily edit endNight with edprocs to comment out the queue check, so it would proceed with the next step. We also ran copyUnstoredFilesInIdReport to get the unarchived frames from the pool. The queue was left as is incase someone wants to try and figure out why archiving didn't resume when the archiver claimed to be writing. endNight asked for passphrase when getting cloud cam data frames.
