APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday March 2, 2006 (MJD 53797) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Jurek Krzesinski Night: Elena Malanushenko Dan Long ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We battled clouds most of the night, but managed to finish one plate (4 2358) and got signal on two others (3 2383, 5 2222). We had a rotator abort around 4:40Z going from from instChange to the target. Telescope position when it aborted was Az=91, El=60, Rot=77. Voltage in mcpMenu was 10k - 12k on next slew for the first 10 degrees or so. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout: ------------------- Spectrographs were focused for the temperature ~9 C. Then when the temperature dropped down, we tried to mechPiston collimators -3000 and sp1 colliamtor A got into trouble. Problem was solved (see the problems section) and Hartman exposures were taken to check that all is fine. No other problems to report. Night: ------ 00:30Z Doors Open, Fans On 01:30Z We wait on clouds. Nearby radar returns bolster our decision to wait on opening. 03:15Z Opening - clouds thinning, radar echoes have moved off. 03:26Z Cartridge 3 2383 Segue 8.3 5.6 12.9 9.8 Needed FK5 03:40Z preCalib 03:46Z First science 37827 Got two exposures before plate expired. 04:36Z instChange 04:39Z Cartridge 4 2358 Survey 18.6 15.4 18.1 15.2 Done Needed FK5 (or so we thought at first). Well actually the rotator aborted during the slew. It aborted going in the positive direction at around 77 deg At the time the azimuth was at 91 and the altitude at 60. Two subsequent slew attempts failed. I went down to check at the telescope and found that when moving the rotator the current was well over 10000, and occasionally going over 12000 which I think is the limit. This was all happening between 4:40Z and 4:55Z for those interested in trolling logs etc. 04:59Z preCalib 05:05Z First science 37831 Seeing getting worse. Now ranging between 2.3 and 2.9 06:02Z Decided to do focus sweep between second and third exp After focusing, seeing still only around 2.2 despite a change of nearly 70 in focus position, but a short time later it improved to around 1.4 when high clouds moved in. 06:20Z Clouds getting thicker. Efficiency drops to 40%. 06:39Z postCalib Done in three long exposures 1500, 1500, 1800 06:44Z instChange TCC/sop connection timeout going to instChange 06:54Z Cartridge 5 2222 Survey 11.5 8.9 13.4 10.1 Guide stars on slew 07:02Z preCalib 07:09Z First science 37838 Exposure aborted when efficiency dropped below 20% after about 5 minutes. 08:39Z Trying again, efficiencies now between 30 and 45%. Got just over 2 (S/N)^2 in 25 min. Second and third exposures useful as well. 10:25Z Clouds getting thicker again. Waiting to start next exposure. 11:00Z Uncomfortably thick cloud moving in from the south so we decide to close. 11:30Z No improvement, so we call it a night. endNight finishes, rejoicing at our hard fought plate. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6040 22:30Z 22:49Z 100 O -152.64 -147.95 45 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 37817, plate -9999 ------- 22:27 37817 0.0 bias ----- sequence 37818, plate 2383 ------- 22:58 37818 10.0 flat 23:00 37819 2.0 arc 23:03 37820 2.1 arc 23:05 37821 2.1 arc 01:04 37822 2.2 arc 01:06 37823 2.1 arc ----- sequence 37824, plate 2383 ------- 8.3 5.6 12.9 9.8 03:24 37824 0.0 bias 03:42 37825 10.0 flat 03:44 37826 2.0 arc 04:07 37827 1200.1 target 04:35 37828 1500.1 target ----- sequence 37829, plate 2358 ------- 18.6 15.4 18.1 15.2 Done 05:01 37829 10.0 flat 05:03 37830 2.0 arc 05:32 37831 1500.1 target 06:00 37832 1500.1 target 06:37 37833 1800.1 target 06:40 37834 10.0 flat 06:43 37835 2.0 arc ----- sequence 37836, plate 2222 ------- 11.5 8.9 13.4 10.1 07:04 37836 10.0 flat 07:06 37837 2.0 arc 09:06 37838 1500.1 target 09:43 37839 1800.1 target 09:48 37840 10.0 flat 09:51 37841 2.0 arc 10:25 37842 1800.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:40Z 3 2383 152.65 0.0029 52.69 0.0021 -55.49 0.0000 1.000230 07:26Z 5 2222 72.46 0.0010 81.01 0.0044 247.23 0.0213 1.000060 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:40Z 3 2383 1.00023 -2271 -607 100 153 52.7 6.3 14 157 - 2.0 05:11Z 4 2358 1.00023 -2271 -689 50 86 64.7 5.9 11 158 - 2.3 06:05Z 4 2358 1.00020 -1975 -392 120 74 75.7 5.2 10 152 - 2.3 07:27Z 5 2222 1.00006 -593 677 50 72 81.1 5.4 14 154 - 1.7 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:06Z 49 28 15 227 (SW) 832 - 21:42Z 51 29 20 210 (SSW) 908 - 22:14Z 51 29 15 216 (SW) 805 - 22:44Z 48 27 15 190 (S) 771 - 23:15Z 48 28 14 227 (SW) 825 - Partly Cloudy 23:45Z 51 27 16 229 (SW) 797 - Mostly Cloudy 00:18Z 52 27 13 223 (SW) 807 - Partly Cloudy 01:42Z 45 26 10 193 (SSW) 878 - Mostly Cloudy 02:15Z 45 26 9 185 (S) 1042 - Mostly Cloudy 02:47Z 45 27 13 178 (S) 1103 - Mostly Cloudy 03:19Z 43 26 13 146 (SE) 1184 - Partly Cloudy 03:49Z 43 25 13 156 (SSE) 1462 - Thin Cirrus 04:19Z 42 24 12 156 (SSE) 1546 - Thin Cirrus 04:50Z 43 24 15 143 (SE) 1640 - Mostly Clear 05:20Z 41 23 8 183 (S) 1695 - Mostly Clear 05:52Z 39 22 11 116 (ESE) 1713 - Thin Cirrus 06:24Z 41 23 12 146 (SE) 1932 - Moderate Cirrus 06:54Z 41 24 14 135 (SE) 2213 - Moderate Cirrus 07:24Z 41 24 13 150 (SSE) 2246 - Thick Cirrus 07:57Z 41 25 18 150 (SSE) 2277 - Thick Cirrus 08:28Z 41 26 13 161 (SSE) 2193 - Thick Cirrus 09:00Z 43 26 14 180 (S) 1649 - Thick Cirrus 09:33Z 43 26 16 195 (SSW) 1469 - Moderate Cirrus 10:03Z 43 27 16 185 (S) 1580 - Moderate Cirrus 10:35Z 43 27 18 187 (S) 1506 - Mostly Cloudy 11:08Z 42 27 22 205 (SSW) 1509 - Mostly Cloudy ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:30Z Doors Open, Fans On, Louvers Open 03:15Z Enclousure Open 11:10Z Enclosure Closed, Louvers Closed, Fans Off.
