APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday June 17, 2006 (MJD 53904) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Jurek Krzesinksi Shannon Watters Mike Harvanek Jim Gunn (by phone) Steve Bastian (by phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We imaged SEGUE stripe 290 N from mu +282 to +318.5 (including ramps). We finished 3 plates (2009, 2201, 2194). After starting successfully, DIMM was found pointing straight down, looking into the bottom of the tub. We had a problem with sp2 secondary dewar pressure starting around 07:57Z. We lost about 30 minutes of science time to this because we had to stop and do a fill. We think there may be a real problem with the spectro dewar fill system. Please see the main log for details. Jim Gunn was notified of the situation. Photometric all night. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Spectro collimation was checked but not adjusted. No problems to report. Night: ------ Photometric but no stripe is available at the beginning of the night so we begin with spectroscopy. 02:56Z Plate 2009 (cartridge 3): Survey. Guide stars on the gotoField. This plate was finished in 3 exposures (2200 sec total). Imaging stripes are now available so we switch to imaging. While switching to imaging we found the DIMM pointed straight down, looking into the bottom of the tub. We shut it down. DIMM ran successfully all last night and we're not sure what the problem is tonight. 04:30Z Run 6212, SEGUE 290 N, start mu +279. Focus, seeing, pointing all good by frame 24, mu +282 (04:42Z). Science starts at frame 38, mu +284. Official moonrise at frame 252, mu +316. Run ends at frame 268, mu +318.5. Everything (seeing, pointing, photometricity) good throughout. Switched back to spectroscopy after moonrise. 07:22Z Plate 2201 (cartridge 5): Survey. Guide stars on the gotoField. Combined with data from last night (53903), this plate was finished in a single 1200 sec exposure. SoS gave a max sky residual warning. Near the end of the exposure for plate 2201 we got a critcal error for sp2 secondary dewar pressure (07:57Z). We checked the LN2 and ccd temps for all 4 spectro ccds and everything looked normal. We hoped it was a false alarm. However, the spectro dewar fill history showed that the last 2 fills had taken only 20 lbs each and so we suspected a problem. We changed cartridges and went to the next field but continued to monitor the ccd and LN2 temps closely. We started to see a rise in temp for ccds 2 & 3. We tried "cc stop/startfillseq" several times but the temps continued to rise. At this point, we stopped spectro setup and moved the telescope to the proper altitude and rotator positions and did a fill. Note that this fill also took only 20 lbs. We verified by both ear and eye that both sp1 & sp2 were filling. We verified that both were filling on the previous fill as well. After this fill completed, we did another "cc stop/startfillseq" and the temps for ccds 2 & 3 began to drop. The temps for ccds 1 & 4 appeared to be fine the whole time. Note that we had a similar problem 2 nights ago (53902). We got a critical error for the sp2 secondary dewar pressure and ccds 2 & 3 warmed slightly but there was no problem with sp1 ccds 1 & 4. We attributed this problem to warmer weather causing the dewars to need a fill earlier than expected. However, we now think there may be a real problem with the spectro dewar fill system. 08:11Z Plate 2194 (cartridge 8): Segue faint. Guide stars on the gotoField. We got set up on this field but then had to fill the spectrographs (see above). We lost about 30 minutes of science time to this problem. When combined with data from last night (53903), this plate was finished in 3 exposures (4800 sec total). We did a midCal after the 2nd exposure. SoS warned of a whopping fiber. We forgot to do an on-telescope bias when imaging so we mounted the imager and took 2 biases. The first bias (run 6213) was obtained with set inst = spectro. We took a second bias (run 6214) with set inst = imager just to be safe. endNight finished successfully. As per Jim Gunn's suggestion, we manually forced a spectrograph fill until liquid spilled out. The fill took 16 lbs. We also requested that Steve Bastian come up and have a look at sp2's full sensor. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame
