APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday May 8, 2007 (MJD 54229) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Viktor Malanushenko (swing) Howard Brewington Dan Oravetz ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- High humidity, clouds, nearby radar returns and lightning (at the beginning of the night) throughout the night prevented us from getting on sky. Mounted the imager and took the monthly biases and flats (reduction results in Imaging Details section). We noticed that the imager bias vector for U3 looks a little different as compared to last month's. Also, the results for CCD76 as seen in the Imaging Details section under IMAGER BIAS looks atypical compared to the rest. During the imager mounting procedure we noticed the cart airsprings pressure was uncharacteristically low at ~10 psi and we adjusted it accordingly, increasing the pressure to 42 psi. Is there perhaps a leak? ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: --------- Rebooted 'astro ad1' - there were errors on server. Afternoon checkout went smoothly. No problems to report. Spectro focus has been adjusted for night temperature of 4C. Cartridge 8 is mounted. We did not begin ventilating on time due to high humidity (90%) and low dewpoint depression (<2C). Night: ----- 06:40Z - Humidity dropped and some of the clouds had cleared, so we began ventilation. Doors and louvers opened, fans on. 07:20Z - Nearby radar returns. Continued ventilation, but closed the doors to halfway. 08:25Z - Stopped ventilating because we closed the doors for the imager biases and flats. Doors and louvers closed, fans off. 08:30Z - Still cloudy, but we haven't had lightning for a few hours and the Weather Tap Lightning Radar confirms this showing no recent lightning strikes in the state. We decided to mount the imager and take imager biases and flats (35 of each) - reduction results in Imaging Details section. We noticed that the imager bias vector for U3 looks a little different as compared to last month's. Also, the results for CCD76 as seen under the Imaging Details section look atypical compared to the others. During the mounting procedure, we noticed the cart airsprings pressure was ~10 psi (uncharacteristically low; possibly a leak?), so we increased it accordinglyto 42 psi. 09:30Z - Unmounted the imager and mounted Cartridge 8, plate 2172. Began ventilation again.
