APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday May 24, 2007 (MJD 54245) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Dan Oravetz Steph Snedden Scott Fleming (UF) Brian Lee (UF) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- ETScience! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- It was a battle with the weather. We took three 50-minute exposures on two different plates. The first had poor seeing, the others had clouds. Two of the exposures may still be useful. The rest of the time, we had high humidity. The wind baffle controller had a senior moment (apparently) and had to be power-cycled before it would move again. Sp1 had a serial communications failure to respond. It required a power-cycle of the sp1 camera micros, then all was well. Why do these things happen at morning twilight? ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: No problems during checkout, although it was a truncated checkout. No spectro or imager biases were done. Night: We opened at sunset to clear skies and acceptable but rising humidity. 03:00Z - Cartridge 1, ET Plate 8026 FK5 at the edge of fiber 10. One 50 minute exposure under bad seeing. The humidity kept climbing and reached closure conditions. M1 and M2 were warmer than ambient temps, and all surfaces except the cloth laptop cover felt dry, so we let the exposure finish. 03:55Z - We closed :( 06:35Z - We opened again. Opening was delayed about five minutes or so because of a wind baffle problem. See problems section. 07:12Z - We closed again. The humidity spiked quickly. 09:13Z - We opened again. Cartridge 6, ET plate 8027 GSOGTF. One calibration spectrum. One 50-minute exposure that had good flux for about ten minutes, then orographic clouds started forming. A second 45-minute exposure was taken. 11:28Z sp1's camera micros stopped communicating. A power cycle was needed. Voltages and temps were checked to be sure that they were still in spec. They were 11:50Z endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 45084, plate -9999 ------- 00:31 45084 0.0 bias 01:39 45085 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:44Z 1 8026 162.82 0.0008 67.72 0.0019 -24.82 0.0215 1.000240 09:19Z 6 8027 159.93 0.0008 78.49 0.0019 -23.52 0.0215 1.000080 10:15Z 6 8027 209.89 0.0008 77.34 0.0019 35.14 0.0215 1.000080 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:44Z 1 8026 1.00024 -2370 -691 135 163 67.7 6.8 19 72 -- 2.5 09:19Z 6 8027 1.00008 -790 466 0 160 78.5 9.8 8 117 -- 1.4 10:15Z 6 8027 1.00008 -790 542 75 210 77.3 8.7 13 145 -- 1.5 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:14Z 62 34 12 223 (SW) 1108 - 23:46Z 59 31 15 241 (WSW) 1211 - 00:19Z 59 32 10 221 (SW) 1307 - 00:49Z 57 32 6 198 (SSW) 1339 - 01:22Z 56 30 0 177 (S) 1414 - 01:54Z 48 38 11 80 (E) 826 - 02:24Z 46 38 16 74 (ENE) 858 - 02:55Z 44 38 17 77 (ENE) 911 - 03:27Z 44 39 18 79 (E) 1119 - 03:59Z 43 40 20 72 (ENE) 1454 - 04:31Z 43 40 22 79 (E) 1903 - 05:03Z 44 41 16 77 (ENE) 2205 - 05:36Z 43 40 7 85 (E) 2305 - 06:08Z 45 38 0 95 (E) 2198 - 06:40Z 50 30 4 89 (E) 1942 - 07:10Z 42 39 13 75 (ENE) 1895 - 07:40Z 44 36 5 90 (E) 2233 - 08:10Z 48 32 9 160 (SSE) 1965 - 08:43Z 50 31 9 175 (S) 1796 - 09:15Z 49 28 9 116 (ESE) 1820 - 09:47Z 44 35 11 84 (E) 2119 - 10:19Z 48 33 12 143 (SE) 2115 - 10:51Z 43 37 13 124 (SE) 2281 - 11:24Z 46 38 15 148 (SSE) 2296 - 11:57Z 48 38 11 145 (SE) 2079 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:25Z - Started building ventilation. 02:07Z - Opened enclosure. 03:55Z - Closed enclosure. The telescope would not slew in altitude. It was the wind baffle that did not want to move, and Dan's attempts to move the telescope just caused windscreen touches. We assume the wind baffle controller just got it's brain randomly scrambled. Power cycling the wind baffle fixed the problem. 11:28Z sp1's camera micros stopped communicating. A power cycle was needed. Voltages and temps were checked to be sure that they were still in spec. They were.
