APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday July 7, 2009 (MJD 55020) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Kaike Pan Dmitry Bizyaev ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- MArvels Science ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Mostly clear night, full Moon. Exposed Marvels survey cartridges: 3414 A (c.7) 3414 B (c.7) - broken (or fallen out) fibers: 63, 64, 3485 A (c.4) 3489 A & B (c.8) 3076 A (c.5) broken fibers 95, 96 3076 B (c.5) A strange "staircase" pattern is observed in two first stellar images this night. May it happens that lunar light is coming throug SDSS spectrographs and goes to fibers when the SDSS spectrographs are partly disassembled and opened now? (see Problems section) Third and all other scienc exposures didn't show this pattern. ~10 minutes were lost for cleaning the gang connector of a moth, see the log. Probably, we need a cover for in-floor gang port. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- 01:12Z started ventilation cart. 7 is mounted Night: ------ 02:16Z sky is clear. We called Nathan (he got to the mountain today) and cleaned the gang connector and in-floor port. Cartridge's port is not dirty. Lost 5 minutes due to this problem. One more TIO taken to check if everything is fine. No really noticeable flux drop is noticed due to the moth, but suspect is we'are loosing 6% flux in some fibers. An explanation on how it happens: the moth was flying in to the in-floor empty slot when there was an exposure and the gang connector was plugged to the cartridge. When the g.c. was replugged to the floor, the moth was trapped and smashed. It would be a good idea to get a simple cover for the gang port. Or, may be, to be able to insert the curtridge's gang port plug into the in-floor port (this will make the "gang plug" management easier, I mean, we won't forget to cover the gang port in cartridge in this case). -- 04:08Z gotoField with 3414 B GSOGTF 04:29Z science 50 min T04:29:19.100.fits, 3414 B, FIELD1068, =35.7 seeing ~ 1" -- Gang connector is cleaned again, to remove possible moth fine parts.
