APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday August 12, 2010 (MJD 55421) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington Dmitry Bizyaev Craig Loomis (support by phone) French Leger (night-time support) Paul Harding Jack Harding ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Do BOSS spectrographs collimation and Kyle's tests. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Cloudy sky and rain first part of the night. Partly cloudy the second one. BOSS spectrograph collimation is finished. B2 ccd orientation needs checking - inclination angle of spectral orders look different from other ccds and is higher (see exposure 118209 as an example). Known problems and upgrades: - sp2 LN2 quick connector is leaking, so auto fill is disabled. We filled manually at 11:20Z. - rotator fiducials do not work. - rotator makes unusual sound when moves (PID coeff problem) -- new fixator knobs on all camera rings. -- tarp on the top of the telescope -- new ccd and cabling in the engineering camera ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- 23:40Z Started the afternoon checkout. 23:50Z Recorded versions 00:00Z Recorded the mirror numbers 00:15Z Checked stui actors 00:16Z Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda3 142G 131G 4.0G 98% / /dev/sda1 99M 30M 64M 33% /boot /dev/sdb1 917G 870G 831M 100% /data hub25m-p:/home - - - - /home_hub25m sdssfiles1-p:/data1/data 1.8T 146G 1.7T 8% /files 00:18Z boss exposure bias itime=0 SOS3 didn't want to restart because some symbolic links were changed by somebody this early morning (log directory). Jon fixed it and sos3 was enabled to start. 00:29Z Restarted SOS with sos3>sos_apocontrol start Night: ------ engineering camera taken off 00:58Z first "track" tcc command unusual behavor: This is strange, I noticed it 2 night ago, and then again tonight. When I initialize telescope for the first time to do test moving, and issue the command "track 121,90 mount" from the tcc prompt, it moves Alt, and also Rotator goes to 30 gedrees even. Note I didn't ask about the rotator move at all. The 2 nights ago the track command was issued immediately after "aix init". Tonight it was "axis init", then "axis stop", the track 121,90 mount The behavor was the same : it goes to the zenith, but also moves rotator to 30 deg. If tried second time, with any combination, it does not move rotator anymiore if /rota... was not specified. Ticket 971 opened to track the problem. 03:00Z we work on focusing of BOSS red specgtrographs, blind moves gave us an initial guess, then we were able to adjust the red rings such that the red sp-s got in spec. cart. 15 with a sparse plugged plate is mounted 04:01Z Arc exposure failed to read. Boss abort and clearExposure didn't help. Found Craig by phone. Craig: sp1 reseted itself right in the middle of an exposure. Reload controllers would help, but I needed to look at the problem before the reset was done to file a ticket. 04:00Z The red spectrohgraphs collimation was done smothly after Craig's fixes. Then we ran into a problem with both blue spectrographs. It was hard to find an initial focused more or less position of the rings, and finally we came to a conclusion that this position should me much closed to the telescopes (i.e. the ring had to be revolved more clockwise) than the hose clamp that holds the blue saddlebags allows. We loosen the hose clamps and moved the saddlebags closer to the telescope, it gave some more space, but the saddlebag boxes on both cameras came so close to the moving rings that prevent them of moving at all. We woke up French. He found thta there are some pipes behind the saddlebags that interfered with the boxes. French fixed the problem, but it took time, we finished the crude initial collimation by 8:30Z. Collimation with hartmans took some more time. Then we tested long moves (+/- 10000 steps) and found that sp1 pistons cannot be moved more than 5000 on one side. We had to move rings on sp1 cameras +30 000 to let the pistons move the full range. sp2 pistons were OK. Kyle's test is started around 03:30Z. B2 orientation of spectral orders on B2 chip is different from the other ccds.
