APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday November 14, 2010 (MJD 55515) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Viktor Malanushenko Dan Oravetz Steph Snedden (afternoon) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- MARVELS until 07:59 (7.0 h), then BOSS (4.2 h) ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Mostly clear skies, but we did lose a little over an hour of BOSS time due to clouds that were too thick. At the end of the night when we closed, the West door closed about 3/4 the way by using the "Close" button and then it stopped. The "Open" and "Close" buttons still seem to work (e.g. the sound is the same and power is applied), but it seems the gears or something are not catching. We had to use the cables to switch to manual and use the chain to close the rest of the way. There are a number of MARVELS fibers that need to be checked. Details in the Log section. We had a number of server errors with the platedb web-app, but a each time a refresh brought it back. MARVELS ------- Cart. 4 was in the plate database ('platedb showActive' showed it was there), but was _not_ in the web-app. Details in Log. Collimation verified to be good. 22:26Z - ThAr lamp on. 23:30Z - Ventilation started, doors opened. 23:35Z - Cartridge 4 mounted. No problems noted at the telescope during checkout. Cartridge 4 shows up in the STUI Log window after issuing 'platdb showActive', but it does not show up in the platedb web-app. This has been with us since Garrett had a problem with the platedb a couple of days ago while working on cartridge 4. The other day, we tried a "makePluggingActive" and cartridge 4 showed up again in the webapp, but by the next day, it had disappeared again. Since we can load the cartridge and we take our MARVELS schedule from Nathan's page, this is not a critical problem. We won't keep doing "makePluggingActive". It may be a one-off related to Garrett's problem. We haven't had problems with any other cartridges since. Night: ----- 00:07Z - Opened to mostly clear skies with scattered cirrus. Started a force-fill of the 180L LN2 dewars. Started the DIMM. 00:35Z - Checked telescope balance and did a test slew to double-check fiducials.
